Phase Cutting Dimmers (PCD) Regulating the brightness of the light is called DIMMING in the lighting language! Depending on the load characteristics, there are different types of dimming. 3 Phase Cutting Dimmers (PCD) OVERVIEW Phase Cutting Dimmers (PCD) Phase cutting dimmers are used to dim Incandescent lamps or LV halogen lamps. Because of the discontinuation of incandescent lamps and some disadvantages of the LV halogen lamps like: No constant light regulation Flickering at low dimming level Voltage drop High Energy Consumption Unusuitable for most compact Lamps Can not be used on electronic ballast s The usage of the Phase Cutting Dimmer is limited any mostly restricted to residential theatre and museum applications with special lamp types. 3 29/06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"

Analogue Dimming Analogue Dimming or commonly known as (1-10v) 1-10V (analogue system, since 1980) Analogue Dimming (1-10v) is used to dim up and down the brightness of the lamp types. Separate switch is required. The dimming level is a direct relationship to the DC voltage applied to the Control gear The differences against Digital Dimming are as follows: 5 29/06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"

Comparison between 1-10 V and DSI/DALI Impact on the light level when voltage drop is existing 1-10v - the lamps have different light level DSI/DALI all lamps have the same light levels especially on low light level values. 60% 59% 55% 60% 60% 60% 7 29/06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"
Comparison between 1-10 V and DSI/DALI OVERVIEW Disturbance on the line Disturbance on the line 1-10v the disturbance on the line has a big influence to the light and the lamp will be flickering. DALI/DSI any disturbance on the line has no influence to the lightlevel. 8 29/06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"

DSI ( Digital Serial Interface) DSI (Digital Serial Interface) was the first digital communication standard in the lighting industry and the predecessor of today's internationally recognised DALI protocol. The DSI Protocol was developed in 1991 by Tridonic to replace Analogue. The DSI standard is a simple digital interface protocol between controllers and control gear (Ballasts,Led Converters,Transformers etc) which is freely available to all. It provides a simple, quick and low maintaince installation and provides nearly all the advantages of the DALI digital communication. In contrast to DALI, the DSI communications is "broadcast", this means that all devices are controlled simultaneously and are not individually addressed /06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"
DSI ( Digital Serial Interface) Communication The way of communication? Technically, the DSI digital communications is via a Manchester-encoded 8-bit protocol. Each signal starts with one start bit to the DSI devices to communicate that a command is transferred. This command is in a data byte, which is for example "Dimmed down" or just "off With the 4 stop-bits the devices are signaled that the command is complete. DSI commands are absolutely clear and very precise thus providing a reliable signal /06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"

What is Dali DALI stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface and is a protocol set out in the technical standard (IEC 62386) this Guarantees compatibility of ballasts. AG-DALI is a working group set up by leading manufacturers and institutions in the field of digital lamp/luminaire control to promote DALI technology and applications. DALI is a dedicated protocol purely for lighting control. DALI cannot be used to control other systems such as BMS. Tridonic has licensed the Digital Dimming Curve to all Manufactures which ensures all dimming levels are equal /06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"
What is Dali DALI has a limited system size (64 addresses) on a Dali Line The maximum DALI supply current is stated as 250mA System size is limited to either 64 nodes or 250mA total system current (whichever value is reached first). When a DALI system is to be constructed containing both ballasts and control units it should be ensured that these limits are not exceeded. If the system size exceeds the limitations there will be problems due to reduced signal integrity? some devices may fail to communicate or respond to commands and the system operation will become unstable /06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"
Dali Communication The way of communication? Data is transferred between controller and devices by means of an asynchronous, half-duplex, serial protocol over a two-wire differential bus, with a fixed data transfer rate of 1200 bit/s /06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"
What is Dali Individual control of fittings: Each unit in the DALI network has it s own individual address, therefore it is possible to communicate directly to the components in the fittings Multi channelling use: Through only one pair of control cable it is possible with DALI to control sixteen different groups of fittings. No mains switching required: The lights are switched off by commands directly from the DALI control system, making the mains switch unnecessary, this opens the door for Emergency Lighting to be incorporated into the one system /06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"
Dali Electrical Guidelines Supplying the system In a DALI system the maximum system current is limited to 250mA, which is supplied from additional power supplies. This is to keep the energy consumption low and to ensure digital signal integrity throughout the system. The smallest possible system, one light fitting and a controller consumes a line current of maximum 2 ma for the digital dimmable ballast and the current required by the control equipment. 6 ma Thus the power consumed is small 8mA. Since in practice the impedance of different DALI units are not identical, the selection of the correct system power supply is not necessarily straight forward. Good practice is to allow sufficient margins for the supply current. This will guarantee reliable system functionality under different conditions and also allow the flexibility for possible system expansion at a later date. On the other hand, selecting an oversized power supply may cause signal distortion. Power supplies which have so called dynamic current limitation, will be suitable for use in almost every size of system /06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"
Dali Electrical Guidelines Requirements for DALI power supplies. The DALI power supply must limit the supply current to max. 250 ma under all circumstances. (under fault conditions) In practical installations the current is good to limit to a lower level in order to maintain the flexibility of changing the layout and increasing the system at later stages. If the limit is exceeded instability and starting problems may occur in the system. Since the DALI signal varies between 0V and 16V the polarity is important to maintain with power supply. There is no limitation to having several power supplies on the same DALI control line as long as the current limit is not exceeded and the supply polarity is taken into account /06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"
What the Bus Length of Dali Routing The maximum voltage drop on the DALI line may not exceed 2V, resulting in a maximum line length of 300 m, between the DALI components furthest apart Good practice For the above mentioned reasons it is the task of the system planner to consider the power consumption of each component used and to plan the system in such a way that the system limitations are not exceeded 31 29/06/2012 To change the footer text please choose "View/Header and Footer"

Things you need to know Standby Power (all digital ballasts have some). Automatic control systems also consume standby power. A simple Contactor Consumes standby power. Digital Dali Standard states 0.5 watts Maximum allowed for standby (April 2012). Latest generation of Ballasts 0.2 watts. Dali and DSI have same standby power. Dali can be expensive to maintain. (Specialist Integrators) Dimming Ballasts have larger Earth Leakage than fixed output ballasts. Most quality Devices are around 0.5ma Best in Class are 0.25ma. SA3000 recommends design to one third tripping current (10ma). Lowest Energy Rating of Dimming Ballasts meet the Celma (EEI A1 Bat) 1 watt lower that EEI A1 Minimum acceptable in Commercial Buildings 50 degrees Ta Best in Class now are 100, degrees Ta Standard Warranty 5 years on Control gear.
