6 Research and Enterprise Design Knowledge research group promotes the progressive practice of applied design, the application of design thinking, and the multidisciplinary diversity of Innovation. We have 30 PhD students and a vibrant masters programme. 9 How we work We work across disciplines Hands on skills are balanced with theoretical and technical knowledge. Solid works, Auto CAD, Adobe suite, Rapid prototyping, CNC machining, Laser cutting, 3D foam cutting, Rendering and 3D digitizing. We believe that high levels of contact-time makes all the difference

We offer live projects & work experience with professional businesses

11 Field trips Although we have fantastic studios and workshops a lot of learning is done outside on field trips, cultural tips to Europe, site visits, industrial manufacturers, professional practitioners and design consultancies.

12 Product Designer Based on world-class IDEO methodology, we believe products should be feasible, viable and desirable. Product Designers are involved with a project from initial strategic and conceptual deign through to details implementation, integrating the essential aspects of Business factors, Human factors, and Technical factors.. Product Designers create: USEFUL products providing a benefit or solving a need. USEABLE products that are intuitive to use DELIGHTFUL and rewarding experiences for tomorrow s innovations

13 Product Designer Students design products in a number of industries including: Domestic consumer products, Medical, wellbeing and health care products, Scientific and hi-tech industries, Leisure and recreational industry, Industrial products, Computer and Digital products.

14 Product Designer Graduates Lawrence Dawes. After graduating Lawrence was snapped up by LEGO. With several products on the market he has now been promoted to creative lead. Oliver Blackwell. After winning the Ideal home exhibition as a student he is now an entrepreneur, licensing several of his home appliance designs for production. Sean Ventures. Is now a Design Leader at dyson. His team recently developed the new domestic Air Multiplier fan which works without blades or grille.

15 Designer Maker Designer Makers are not simply craftspeople or artisans earning a living by applying making skill, but design thinkers characterised by their innovatory approach to the application of materials in search of new design solutions. Makers develop a confidence to move across scales of production the one-off to batch production, and acquire a knowledge of materiality and an expression of a narrative.

16 Designer Maker Strong environmental and sustainable thinking combined with high quality making processes in wood, ceramic, fabrics, metals and other natural materials provide new ideas for contemporary modern living.

17 Designer Maker Graduates Jo Lane and Clare Lovett Set up a workshop together after graduating. They make beautiful ceramic vases sold and exhibited in galleries all over the world. John Caswell Awarded 1 st prize in the RSA now works with Cod Steaks for the film industry including Wallace & Grommit s A close shave. James Otter. Has set up his business in Devon making furniture and hollow wooden surfboards to reduce and replace the use of toxic substances.

18 Spatial & interior Designer Creates new and innovative spaces for people to inhabit in: Interior Design commercial and private spaces, branding and architectural environments. Public realm design place making, urban upgrading and community projects, museums and galleries, Ecological design landscape, rural and costal sustainable initiatives. Crosses the boundaries of interior design, landscapes, architecture, art, engineering and furniture.

19 Spatial & Interior Designer Spatial & Interior Designer is distinguished by the creative engagement of site responsive projects with professional collaborations to create a challenging context in relation to professional practice. Links with City of Plymouth: Urban upgrading, street regeneration & community spaces Interior remodeling: Schools, commercial spaces, retail, workplace and residential renovations. Landscape: public parks, urban gardens & ecological innovations.

20 Spatial & Interior Designer Graduates Jemma Ham. After winning the Gleed award Jemma is now a design manager with LDA design working on concepts for the 2012 London Olympics. Vickesh Mistry Following his work placement in London Vickesh is now an Interior designer and visualiser on projects in Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, and Madrid. Helen Dowsett. Completed her BA and MA with Plymouth and is now design international proposals with Norman Foster Architecture practice in NY.

21 MA Design The disciplines of design is evolving and responding to rapid commercial and technological advances and changes to our environment. MA design spearheads a new generation a design thinking and opportunities for success. MA Design is focused, comprehensive and relevant to industry. Social, environmental and economic issues are addressed through various design methodologies and philosophies.
