Differentiate algebraic, logarithmic, and exponential functions. 2. Interpret the geometric significance of the derivative. 3. Use First and Second Derivative Tests to find relative maxima and minima. 4. Sketch accurate graphs of functions, showing relative extrema, concavity, points of inflection. 5. Find the absolute maximum and absolute minimum values of functions (if they exist) on an interval. 6. Apply techniques of differentiation to maximum/minimum problems, marginal analysis problems, and approximations using differentials. 7. Compute anti-derivatives and definite integrals involving various algebraic, logarithmic, and exponential functions. 8. Use partial derivatives and LaGrange Multipliers in finding relative extrema of functions of several variables. 9. Compute double integrals. Course Outline of Topics I. Derivatives 1. Basic rules of differentiation 2. The geometric interpretation of the derivative 3. Product, quotient, and chain Rules II. Applications of the Derivative 1. In every TROY Online course, students should read all information presented in the Blackboard course site and should periodically check for updates-at least every 48 hours. Remember: This is not a correspondence course in which a student may work at his/her own pace. Each week there are assignments, online discussions, online activities and/or exams with due dates. Refer to the schedule at the end of the syllabus for more information. Course Listing, Number, Title, Number of Semester Hours MTH 2201 Calculus and Its Applications, 3 Semester Hours Accurate Course Description An introduction to the basic ideas and techniques of differential and integral calculus, especially as they relate to problems involving maximum and minimum values of functions and marginal analysis. Prerequisite: Placement or a grade of C or better in MTH 1112 or MTH NOTE: Credit will not count toward a major or minor in mathematics. Course Textbooks, Manuals, or Required Materials MTH 2201 Business Calculus, Custom Edition, from Calculus And Its Applications 10/e by Marvin Bittinger, David Ellenbogen and Scott Surgent The textbook provider for the TROY Online of Troy University is Barnes and Noble; please go to There will be a link to the Barnes and Noble bookstore in Blackboard and in Trojan Web Express. You will see two options. Students are required to purchase one of these following two options from Barnes and Noble.

5 Not having your textbook is not an acceptable excuse for late work. Students who add this course late should refer to the Late Registration section for further guidance. Supplementary Materials The use of a scientific calculator is recommended for this course. A graphing calculator is acceptable, but not necessary. Attendance Policy In addition to interaction via Blackboard and contact, students are required to contact the instructor via or telephone by the first day of the term for an initial briefing. Although physical class meetings are not part of this course, participation in all interactive, learning activities is required. Submitting Assignments Please refer to the document called Online Tips for Success which is found on our Blackboard website for detailed instructions on submitting work in this course. Make-up Work Policy Missing any part of this schedule may prevent completion of the course. If you foresee difficulty of any type (i.e., an illness, employment change, etc.) which may prevent completion of this course, notify the instructor as soon as possible. Failure to do so will result in failure for an assignment and/or failure of the course. See Attendance, above. If I have not heard from you by the deadline dates for assignments, exams, or forums, no make-up work will be allowed (unless extraordinary circumstances existed, such as hospitalization). Requests for extensions must be made in advance and accompanied by appropriate written documentation if the excuse is acceptable to the instructor. "Computer problems" are not an acceptable excuse. Students should have their textbook from the first week of class. Not having your textbook will not be an acceptable excuse for late work. Students who add this course late should refer to the Late Registration section for further guidance.

7 Examination and Testing Instructions The exams will be a combination of multiple choice, true-false, and open-ended. Regular exams will be available for a three-day period. The final exam will be open for one week. See the Assignment and Testing Schedule on this syllabus and on our Blackboard course site for the dates during which time the exams will be available. This document is also available at the end of the course syllabus. The exams will be open for a three-day window of time. Students must submit all exams in one sitting (usually 120 minutes). Only one attempt for each test is allowed. Exams (and assignments) not completed within the required timeframe and in one sitting will be assigned a grade of zero. There will be a penalty for not finishing an exam within the time limit.
