6 Laboratory Intercomparison Program Tests have been conducted once annually beginning in 1978, twice annually beginning The 39th comparison has just been completed. Participation is required of every laboratory serving a GAW precipitation chemistry station. Test samples have been made more relevant to participating laboratories. Results will once again be available via the Web later this month.

10 Second Global Atmospheric Deposition Assessment Initial meeting held in Las Vegas, January 2008 Considerable progress has been made: Paper outline, draft science questions, and bibliography are in draft form First writing workshop to be held May Experts heavily involved from all continents except South America and Antarctica. Canadian scientists are serving as organizational lead Global model results will complement available data Working with Bob Duce and the GESAMP program to estimate deposition to oceans. Results to provide input to Nitrogen Deposition/Critical Loads/Biodiversity Workshop in November organized by Jim Galloway

11 Linkages with Other Programs International Nitrogen Initiative dedicated to optimizing the use of nitrogen in food production, while minimizing the negative effects of nitrogen GESAMP GESAMP (UN Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of marine Environmental Protection) The Atmospheric Input of Chemicals to the Ocean EMEP task force on Reactive N HTAP HTAP (Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution) primarily through Terry Keating (US EPA), Wenche Aas (NILU), and Frank Dentener (Ispra) US Canada AQ Agreement formally recognized the current GAW assessment as part of its mandate to address transboundary air pollution

12 Challenges to the GAW PC Programme SAG PC Programme support is insufficient to institute improved technical support to emerging laboratories and field sites Expert visitations Provision of standard reference materials Special studies on sample preservation, etc. The QA/SAC Americas/World Data Center for Precipitation Chemistry is not fully functional Van Bowersox (US National Atmospheric Deposition Program, Program Coordinator, Retired) hired January, Interlaboratory Quality Assurance Program on track QA products (including ring diagrams) and limited data should be available online by the end of May

15 7.4 Wet Deposition [Task 7.62] ] Re establish establish and stabilize funding for the World Precipitation Chemistry Data Centre so that it is able to accept, quality assure assure and make available historical and current data in a timely manner. [Task 7.63] ] Publish and post on the QA/SAC web page results of WMO inter laboratory quality assurance assessments using the Environment Canada ring diagram scheme. [Task 7.64] ] Enforce strict data acceptance criteria, clear procedures, and effective feedback for nations and stations wishing to make precipitation chemistry measurements as described in GAW Report 160. [Task 7.65] ] Continue the annual GAW Laboratory Intercomparison Studies.

16 7.4 Wet Deposition, Continued [Task 7.66] ] Make data easily accessible to a wide range of users. [Task 7.67] ] Assist in developing regional programmes, and identify and attempt to increase the number of precipitation chemistry monitoring sites. [Task 7.68] ] Assess the quality of GAW precipitation chemistry data and the success of the new SOPs. [Task 7.69] ] Organize a scientific assessment of precipitation chemistry, combining GAW data, data from cooperating regional networks and from simulation models. [Task 7.70] ] Cooperate with other international organizations expressing interest to use information on precipitation chemistry
