1 Life Saving 1 What is the retrieval? It is the safe recovery of survivors from water by rescue boat or any other means. 2. What is Muster List? It is a list, where we get all required actions/duties to be performed in case of any emergency including all the names, ranks, duties of all crews and Master. In this list also. we get the lifeboat locations, fire stations, emergency signals, abandon ship signal etc. 3. What is Contingency Plan? Same as Muster list. 4. Where we get Muster List/ Contingency Plan? a. Bridge. b. Smoke room. c. Engine room. d. Alleyway. e. Saloon. 5. What is the general emergency signal? Seven or more short blasts followed by one long blast by ship s whistle. 6. What is the Abandon ship signal? Verbal order by Master to leave ship. 7. If ship s power fails, how a lifeboat can be lowered? No power is required to lower a lifeboat, so if there is no power, it will not be a problem to lower a lifeboat. 8. Where we can hear the general emergency Signal? We can hear this signal throughout all the crew and master accommodation and also at all the normal crew working spaces. 1

It is a peace of wire fitted in the gravity davit with the lifeboat to bring the lifeboat to the embarkation deck and also to prevent the lifeboat to swing to bang against the ship s side at the time of lowering. 10. Can a lifeboat sink? No, unless its buoyancy tank/chamber is damaged. 11. How many types of painter used at Life raft? Two types, 1. Fixed painter. 2. Toggle painter. 12. What is the length of a painter? The length is not less than the twice height from stowing position of life raft to lightest seagoing water line of ship or 15meters, whichever is greater. 3 15. What are the requirements of a Life buoy? 1. Outer diameter not more than 800 mm 2. Inner diameter not less than 400 mm 3. Constructed of buoyant material. 4. Mass not less than 2.5 kg. 5. Support 14.5 kg of iron for 24 hours in fresh water. 6. Withstand a drop into water from a stowage position to waterline in light condition or 30 meter whichever is greater. 7. Fitted with a grab line not less than 9.5 mm in diameter. Grab line secured at 4 equidistant points. Length not less than 4 times the outside diameter. 8. Painted by international orange / highly visible colour. 9. Readily available on both sides of vessel. At least one at stern. No permanent securing. 10. At least one buoy on each side fitted with buoyant life line (length=2 x stow height or 30 meter) 11. At least ½ the nos. of life buoys fitted with lights (capacity=2 hours) 12. At least 2 with smoke floats (capacity=15 minutes) Marked in roman ship s name and port of registry. 16. What are the characteristics of a Rescue boat? 1. Can be launched easily from stowage position of a ship running with 5 knots. Speed. 2. Capable to rapid recovery from sea. 3. Can be maneuvered at 6 knots for 4 hours. 4. Can tow the largest life raft with full compliment at 2 knots. 5. It is used to recover persons from water also marshal survival craft. 6. It can be launched with in 5 minutes. 7. Ii is not less than 3.8 meters and not more than 8.5 meters in length. 8. It is capable of carrying at least 5 seated persons and 1 lying person. 9. It has a buoyant line of 50 meter length for towing purpose. 17. What are the requirements of Food Ration at Life raft? 10,000-kilo joules/person. 3

The length of the Embarkation ladder should be such that it can reach to the lightest seagoing water label from embarkation deck, with 20-degree list and 20-degree trim on either side. 19. What is the length of lifeboat- lifeline? The length of the Lifeline should be such that it can reach to the lightest seagoing water label from davit span, with 20-degree list and 20-degree trim on either side. 20. What is the characteristic of lifeboat searchlight? Searchlight Beam length is 180m and width is 18m with total period of 6hrs and 3hrs continues period. 21. How many sea anchors are in life raft? Two, one is fixed and other one is for emergency use. 22. What is drogue? When a sea anchor is in use, is called Drogue. 23. What is EPIRB? Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon. The E.P.I.R.B. has a test and an activation switch on it, the test should be carried out every muster drill and this should also be logged. Every vessel over 300Grt must carry an E.P.I.R.B. E.P.I.R.B. should be serviced every year and the Lithium battery of it, replaced every 5 years. 24. What are the frequencies of EPIRB? MHz, 243 MHz, MHz. 25. What is SART? Search and Rescue Radar Transponder. To activate a S.A.R.T; 4

(3) Check the RED light is on (4) In onboard the vessel, try and get it as high as possible (5) If in a Life raft, mount it on top of the life raft Below are the normal technical Information, for EPIRB, Battery Renewal - 4 years Type of battery - Lithium Operating life span hours in stand-by mode and 8 hours when continuously sending a signal Serviced every 2 years Monthly tests - turn the switch on the S.A.R.T. to test mode, hold for a few seconds, an audible alarm will sound and the light will flash (As soon as you see the light and hear the sound you should switch it off) 26. What is hypothermia? Hypothermia is a condition, in which an organism's temperature drops below that required for normal metabolism and bodily functions. So human s hypothermia occurs, when core or internal body temperature goes to less than 95 F (35 C). 27. What is the meaning of Red band at Lifeboat davit? The red band used in some country to indicate that the davit is not safe to lower the lifeboat up to water label with full compliments and equipment. 28. What is the maximum time to put on a Life jacket? One min. 29. What are the types of Life jackets as per weight? Two types 1. Adult (for more than 70lbs. person) 2. Child (for less than 70ibs person). 30. What will you do with expired Pyrotechnics? Hand over local authority via agent/office, but should never thrown overboard. 31. What will you do with inactive/in operational pyrotechnics? 5

Cover it with canvas or cloth for insulation. Huddle with others, to keep warm, moving enough to keep the blood circulating. Spread an extra tarpaulin, sail, or parachute over the group. Give extra rations, if available, to men, who are suffering from exposure to cold. 12

Use sunburn cream, if available. (With life raft, release some air from life raft s bottom layer, so that survivor can come closer to sea level and get some comport from hot weather) 76. What are the precautions with sharks, seen from life rafts? Do not fish, even If you have hooked a fish, let it go. Do not clean fish in the water. Do not throw garbage overboard.
