2 Breaking the cycle s approach BtC instigates a family-centred approach to substance misuse, which provides practical skills to support the needs of service users and their understanding of family life, while also raising awareness of substance misuse and its impact on the family.

3 Breaking the cycle aims to : Help parents to address their substance misuse, and by tackling the effects of parental misuse, helps to provide a safer, more stable environment in which children can achieve their full potential

4 Helps improve family stability by working creatively and flexibly and providing tailored packages of care Helps to improve parenting skills, social competence and family functioning, ensuring children are better supported within the family unit

5 Break the intergenerational cycle of substance misuse Make family based work with substance misusers integral to local service delivery

6 The overall focus is to encourage parents to be more focused on the health, safety and achievement of their child. This, in turn gives children a better role model of parenting which should, ultimately contribute towards breaking the cycle of addiction.

7 Breaking the Cycle has been operational within Addaction s pilot sites since 2005 Addaction offers 3 BtC sites within the Cambridgeshire area including Huntingdon, Cambridge and Wisbech

8 BtC was evaluated independently in 2009, the report found that : 83% of clients achieved some level of progress in working towards their treatment goals 81% of parents have stabilised, reduced or stopped highly problematic substance use that was impacting negatively on their and their families lives

9 81.7% of parents have reduced their involvement in harmful behaviours (i.e. problematic use, domestic abuse, safeguarding concerns and offending) 84% of parents had acknowledged the benefits of engaging in a meaningful occupation (i.e. hobbies, caring, education, parenting, leisure, employment)

10 87% of parents had increased their efforts to prioritise their children s healthy development (i.e. through their general health, emotional, social, physical development, school attendance)

13 Interventions we offer include : Harm reduction information Assessment and recovery planning Motivational and solution focused interventions Advice and Information and family support Referral to family group support

14 Family mediation Signposting Advocacy Home visits and community outreach support Delivering whole family interventions to improve family functioning Offer co-ordinated support for young people with partner agencies and schools

15 Devise family based strategies for addressing issues i.e. children s attendance at school, attendance at important meetings Referral to, and raising awareness of, local Sure Starts

16 Moving BtC forward Addaction has recently secured another 2 years worth of funding from the Department for Education, to develop the skills of staff within Sure Start settings to identify and respond to the needs of families affected by substance misuse. The work will begin in June, and we expect the free training will be rolled out to Sure Start centres across the country from September.

17 BtC workers along with the appointed Addaction trainers are working closely together to raise awareness around substance misuse and local support available To continue to work collaboratively with partner agencies To use National Family Week (30/05/11 to 03/06/11) to raise awareness and develop local relationships

18 Referral Criteria An assessment will be completed when one or both of the parents or carers is misusing substances and meets any of the below criteria : referral to social services child is placed on a child protection plan care proceedings may or have been initiated the child is directly engaging in illegal activity as influenced by parental drug/alcohol misuse the child is directly engaging in the procurement of drugs the child is directly engaging in drug/alcohol taking the child must be under the age of 18 the refer believes that the clients substance misuse is directly affecting their ability to parent the refer believes that the client has little/no recognition that their substance misuse/behaviour impacts on their family function
