2 Page 2 of 5 "We're very proud of our students," said Rebekah Ghosh, MATHS Principal. "They worked very hard to prepare for this test. Their scores also reflect the dedication and effort of their teachers, especially since the blizzard caused our students to miss two weeks of school right before the MSA's. Although these scores show improvement, we want all of our students scoring proficient." MATHS Uniforms Visit Campus Outfitters to order MATHS Uniforms for next school year. MATHS school code is MA1541. Campus Outfitters also lists each grade level's mandatory color uniform shirt. Note: Students will not be permitted to wear clothing that does not have the MATHS logo. MATHS Family & Student Orientations We will hold two orientations for new students and their families in August.

3 Page 3 of 5 August 9 August 21 High School Orientation Middle School Orientation (New Families) (All Families) 9:00am-10:00am 10:00am 11:30am MATHS staff will present an overview of the academic programs, uniform requirements,school policies and procedures and the new discipline procedures at both orientations. If you can not attend your orientation, please call Michelle Washington, Program Manager, at Mandatory Senior Class Meeting: Saturday, August 21 Mandatory Senior Class Meeting Saturday, August 21 1:00pm MATHS Auditorium Seniors will hear about upcoming senior activities, review high school graduation requirements and receive additional college resources. There will be food, games and prizes! For more information, please contact Ms. Goins at Parents do not need to attend this event. MATHS Students Return from Paris Trip MATHS students just returned from a trip to Paris, the culmination of a year s worth of fundraising. We went to Paris to experience another culture different from the US, said Melissa Loftus, 6th Grade Non-Fiction teacher and trip organizer. After the trip to Costa Rica last year, we wanted to experience something completely different, and also to see some of the most important and famous historical locations in the world. Between July 23 and 30, our students visited several of Paris celebrated sites and landmarks such as the Effel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysses and Montmarte. Our students also attended the Louvre, where they saw the Mona Lisa, and visited Giverny, the home of Claude Monet and his gardens. High school students Ricky Jackson, Cortnie Belser, Taylor Jamison, Jada Parks and Ashlee Hughes attended the trip. Together, they raised over $6,000 to go on the trip. They raised the money by holding a benefit at the Baltimore Comedy Factory, selling Jo Corbi s pizzas and snacks before and after school. Chaperoning the trip with Ms. Loftus was Robert Ferguson, Title I Reading Specialist.

4 Page 4 of 5 The Goldsmith Family Foundation & the Wright Family Foundation Award Grants to MATHS Two charitable foundations based in Baltimore recently awarded us a pair of grants to operate Baltimore City TutorCorps next school year. The Goldsmith Family Foundation awarded us $10,000 in May and the Wright Family Foundation awarded MATHS $10,000 in June. The Wright Family Foundation s award is their second donation to the program. Click here to donate to Baltimore City TutorCorps and help prepare our students to succeed in high school MATHS Partners with Project Lead the Way and Baltimore City Public Schools We are very excited to announce that in partnership with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and the Career and Technology Education office of Baltimore City Public Schools, we will be offering our specialized track in Engineering. This partnership will enhance our specialized track with an award-winning hands-on curriculum that positions our students for success in college and beyond. PLTW is an educational organization preparing students to be the most innovative and productive leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). PLTW partners with middle schools and high schools to provide a rigorous, relevant STEM education. Through an engaging, handson curriculum, PLTW encourages the development of problem-solving skills, critical thinking, creative and innovative reasoning, and a love of learning. The Career and Technology Education (CTE) office is a department of Baltimore City Public Schools Office of Learning. CTE programs prepare both youth and adults for a wide range of careers. Their programs provide opportunities for students to earn industry-recognized credentials and college credit while still in high school. MATHS Joins National After-School Initiative MATHS has joined the National Partnerships for After-School Science (NPASS2) initiative, a program bringing high-quality STEM-based (science, technology, engineering and math) programs to schools across the nation. NPASS2 lets MATHS students apply the knowledge they learn in their science and math classes to engaging, hands-on activities. MATHS will operate NPASS2 for 6th & 7th grade students next school year on Mondays from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. More information will follow soon. NPASS2 is a project of the Education Development Center, with funding from the National Science Foundation. NPASS2 is being implemented in eight states across the country.
