Cheltenham Primary School 1:1 BYOD Program 2015 Presented by ICT Team

BYOD - A DEECT Supported Program The Department of Education ipad trial returned enormously positive results, particularly in Primary Schools. DEET ipads for Learning Trial Report, 2011 DEECD s ipad trial has shown that effective use of an ipad can increase: independent and self initiated learning among students student motivation and active engagement build teacher capacity the ipad is a powerful tool in the teaching and learning toolkit that can enhance learning in just about any learning context

Teacher Professional Leave 2014 Findings from our trial: - A marked improvement in students feelings and motivations towards reading and writing. - Students felt more independent, they didn't need to rely on the teacher as much. - They felt a sense of success with their learning

BYOD Programs in other schools Large numbers of Primary and Secondary schools are adopting 1:1 ipad programs, including many of our neighbouring Primary schools such as: Black Rock PS, Kingswood PS, St Kilda PS, Chelsea Heights PS, Brighton Beach PS, Hampton PS, and many more. Secondary schools; Sandringham College, Mentone Girls Secondary College and St Leonards. Schools that had existing 1:1 programs with laptops and netbooks, are switching to ipads.

Remember when - The only way to demonstrate knowledge was with pen and paper.

Now there s many ways to publish Students can demonstrate their understanding in numerous ways and personalise their learning.

Remember when - Were all different things?

Imagine a HD film camera, state of the art editing suit, and movie theatre that you could carry around with you...

Why 1:1? We want the best learning opportunities for our students. Students are more empowered to navigate their learning. CPS classrooms consistently use technology and we want all students to have access whenever they need it. We want to plan to use devices whenever they are needed, not just within small groups and at the computer lab. Digital literacy skills are essential for our children to be successful in the 21st century.

Why choose ipad? ipads are the current market leader in education. The ipads has a standard operating system which makes it easier for students and parents to learn and follow. There are more educational apps available than any other mobile operating system. ipads have already proven to be successful in school settings.

How is this program going to benefit my child? The ipad inspires hands-on learning and can be used to promote creativity in the classroom. There are thousands of powerful apps that allow students to engage in interactive ways and instantly find information. This innovative tool has the capability to provide personalised learning. The ipad allows students to gain access to a continually growing bank of educational content. The use of ipads have allowed our teachers to expand their programs to fit the needs of today s students and to better equip them with the skills they ll need in the modern world.

The best learning occurs when technology gets out of the way and allows learning to be the focus. 1:1 is about the learning, not the technology. We now have an easy connection between an individuals desire to create something and the tools to create it.

Feedback from Student Survey

Teacher Training Teachers have already been using the ipads in classrooms successfully throughout The ICT team have been delivering professional development to all staff on a regular basis throughout the year to ensure teachers are confident and capable in using 1-to-1 devices in their teaching practice. These sessions have focused on training teachers to use technology to strengthen the learning experience for students, leading to learning new things in new ways. We use the SAMR model to plan, create and evaluate tasks set for these students. It is a model to measure the application of technology, or its level of use to improve student outcomes at any level.

Storage We understand the importance of ensuring your child s ipad is safe whilst at school. Each morning our students will securely store their bags within a locked / teacher attended classroom until the bell goes. Students will store their ipads in a locked filing cabinet in their classroom during school hours or when not being used. Students are not permitted to take their ipads into the school yard at recess or lunchtime for any reason. All ipads should be kept in a protective case. In addition, a compact tablet bag is very worthwhile to help students carry the ipad between classes. Students are also instructed not to leave ipads on the floor or near food.

Purchasing ipad Requirements You are free to purchase an ipad from any retailer you choose. We require: minimum of an ipad2 (Wi-fi only) model for the program. We highly recommend that an ipad has storage of 32GB. The ipad Mini is also acceptable. Purchasing a new device If you plan to buy a new device it is recommended that you do some research into the requirements of the high school that your child will attend in the future. Each high school has their own specific requirements and needs and it is important that you find this out before purchasing. 3G ipads We do not recommend purchasing a 3G enabled ipad. Students will have access to the Internet at school (which is filtered to block any inappropriate content). If you child brings a 3G ipad to school, we require them to take the sim card out and only use wifi while at school. Insurance It is recommended that parents organise insurance for their device. Parents will also need to buy a suitable cover for the ipad.

Protective Cases

Setting up your new ipad When purchasing a new ipad, the Apple store will guide you with the initial setup. We also have how to guides that are available on our website. Setting up your itunes Account As your child is under the age of 13, you will be required to set up your child s itunes account. Parents need to use their own date of birth during the set up process. Using an itunes gift card is recommended, not a credit card. It is also important that parents actively monitor the apps (and other media) that that students are putting on their ipads.

Apps Required Pages Numbers Keynote imovie Garageband Inspiration Book creator Stripdesign Explain Grammar Wonderland Cloudart Dropbox Pic Collage Skitch Baiboard Mathletics MyScript A+ calculator spelling Showbie test Aurasma Dictionary.co m These can be purchased slowly over the year.

Restrictions and User Guides You can set restrictions for some apps, and for purchased content. For example, parents can restrict explicit music from appearing in playlists, or disallow changes to certain settings. How to: Turn on restrictions. Go to Settings General. Restrictions, then tap Enable restrictions. You ll be asked to define a restrictions passcode that s necessary in order to change the settings you make. This can be different than the passcode for unlocking the ipad. Restrict in-app purchases: Many apps provide extra content or enhancements for a fee. To limit purchases that can be made within an app, go to settings. General. Restrictions (make sure restrictions is enabled), then turn off In-App Purchases.

Technical Support Our technician will be available to help students with connecting to the wifi during school hours. Our technician will try to get all students connected to the wifi within the first two weeks of term 1. For any other technical problems all ipads are covered by a one year manufacturers warranty. If your ipad experiences a genuine hardware fault, please visit your local Apple store. If your, or your child s, ipad screen breaks due to being dropped or mistreated you will need to organise to have it repaired. Insurance is highly recommended.

2015 ipad Program Year 5/6 1:1 access will enable students and teachers to choose from a wider variety of tools at any given time. Together decisions will be made about the most effective ways students can craft their work and create, showcase and share their learning with others. Students will use a range of apps in the classroom. They will manage their work - saving and storing They will collaborate with others to create movies, projects and brainstorm ideas, reflect on their learning. They will create in ways never possible before- movies, publish books, create mind maps, animations, create music.

How much time will my child be spending on the the ipad at school? It is important that you understand that the ipad will not solely replace traditional pen and paper activities. We still believe there is a place for traditional texts and writing skills today and in the future. The ipad will only be used during certain times in the day and when needed to support student learning. Students will still be interacting with each other face-toface during class times. The ipad is seen as a tool to support active learning. Students will still learn using a wide range of materials and resources.

ipad Code of Conduct Clear expectations will be laid out for students with regard to ipad etiquette during lessons and consequences reinforced. Our teachers are prepared for these challenges and have begun setting expectations and etiquette in their classes.

Cybersafety Cybersafety programs are taught at school on a regular basis in the classroom. We need to teach our children how to handle technology in an appropriate manner and draw clear boundaries on what is acceptable use. For more information please see the following links: Who is responsible for internet safety at home? The parents. It is a parent s responsibility to ensure they have a protected network and good internet protocols and environment at home. This year CPS hosted a parent Cybersafety information evening - in which you would have received many tips on keeping your children cybersafe at home. Kidproof Information

Recommended usage of ipad at home At home we recommend that students use their ipad for no more than one hour a day. At home students should: Use their ipad in a shared place in the house Never in your child s bedroom Charge the ipad in a central spot (e.g. kitchen) and then lock it away over night.
