2013 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends and Supporters, Thank you for your continued support. I am proud to announce that despite facing many challenges in 2013, Er forrás Alapítvány United Way Hungary completed the year successfully. It is my pleasure to share with you some of our accomplishments. We, at Erôforrás Alapítvány United Way Hungary, envision a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through adequate education, financial stability and healthy lives. This is what we are working for and can achieve it by bringing together the organizations, the people and all other resources required to create opportunities for a better life for all. We have a global approach but we are locally based. We think and act locally. We work with local communities in Hungary, to help locally. Our team is committed to assessing and fulfilling local needs by using both domestic and international resources. Our operation has to comply with strict Global Standards, we are transparent and accountable. Thanks to your generous financial support and your volunteer and advocacy efforts, we made several important steps towards our vision and implemented great projects with long lasting impacts. Thank you for your support to date. We are also counting on your support and partnership in the future. Join us and make an impact! Sincerely yours, László Czirják Chairman of the Board
Dear Supporters, In Hungary most children aged 7-14 who lose their lives do so due to an accident that could have been prevented. With the aim to reduce the number of these preventable accidents, we initiated a Child Safety Program in 2010 which we have since managed. The program is now up and running in 129 primary schools nationwide, with a special focus on the deprived regions where children are even more vulnerable. Thanks to the increasing number of teachers voluntarily participating in the program, by the end of 2013 more than children have had the opportunity to learn more about safety in an innovative and playful way. Beyond our effective and successful Child Safety Program Erôforrás Alapítvány United Way Hungary has acted as a catalyst for the development of the civil society and remained one of the leading nonprofit organizations with a strong commitment to spreading the spirit of volunteerism. We have ambitious plans for the year to come. For example, with the objective to identify further causes our society is concerned about and we can support in the future, we initiated and conducted a Stakeholder Dialogue in June, We conducted dialogues with 13 different groups including teachers, social workers, non-profit leaders and corporate volunteers. Once all dialogues finished, we prioritized our findings, presented them to the Board of Trustees and with the consent of the Board of Trustees we will focus our efforts on identifying the most important problems which we then, even starting in 2014 can start solving by bringing together all key stakeholders. We believe that, by combining your help and our strengths, together we can make changes for the better in Hungary. We believe in the power of unity. Thank you for your support so far and I truly hope that we can also count on you in the future. Sincerely yours, Tamás Füzesy Chief Executive Officer
EDUCATION, INCOME AND HEALTH IN FOCUS United Way Hungary focuses all its activities on three major areas: Education, Income and Health. ADVANCING THE COMMON GOOD Creating Opportunities For A Better Life For All EDUCATION Helping Children & Youth Achieve Their Potential. INCOME Promoting Financial Stability & Independence. HEALTH Improving People s Health. Our vision is a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, financial stability and healthy lives. This is what we are working for everyday and we are thankful to our supporters, volunteers and other partners, for joining and helping us to reach our goals. We are grateful for our supporters, volunteers and every single partner for joining us and helping us fulfill our mission.
GLOBAL APPROACH, LOCAL FOCUS While United Way Hungary is an independent, self- funded Hungarian foundation, we are also part of the United Way Worldwide network, the world s largest, privately-supported nonprofit organization. This means that, in 41 countries, 1800 organizations share our vision. It gives our supporters an additional assurance that, being part of the United Way Worldwide, we maintain the United Way standards that promote best practices and transparency. United Hungary engages in active dialogue with all participants of Hungarian society. We work to assess the most pressing issues with our donors and supporters and more importantly, with each of the participants impacted, in the areas of education, income and health. We do this to facilitate a change for the good. UNITED WAY BY THE NUMBERS countries 41 and territories million+ volunteers 2,92 engaged million 10 individual donors 1800 local community-based United Way organizations worldwide billion USD raised by the 5,273 worldwide movement in 2012
Own Child Safety Program (Biztibusz) HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR 2013 Biztibusz was created in 2010, with the objective of reducing the number 1of preventable accidents, the leading cause of child death in Hungary. The program was developed by United Way Hungary and the National Institute of Child Health. It applies innovative teaching methods and is run in primary schools, led by volunteer teachers trained by United Way Hungary. In 2013 we gave a further boost to Biztibusz, by organizing 7 volunteer training sessions for 130 teachers, from 65 elementary schools. In addition to that also 24 graduates form Eötvös Loránd University Faculty of Primary and Pre-School Education participated in the program. In order to enable teachers to implement Biztibusz at schools, we produced 65 school kits and donated them to the schools. Number of Biztibusz school teachers trained by United Way 250 Number of schools participating in the program Number of children exposed to the program at schools
2 Educational Activities on Children s Day Aside from delivering our Child Safety educational program directly to schools, the program was also presented at several community events. This resulted in the further reaching and education of thousands of families, from all over the country. Children s Day was held on the 26th of May, 2013 in Hungary. We celebrated it together with the Palace of Arts and the Children s Museum (Mesemúzeum). Around 4,500 parents and children visited these events, and we involved nearly 30 volunteers in the preparation and management process. On our own initiative we teamed up with 4 partner civil organizations and together we created an unforgettable educational experience, based around the theme of safety. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR 2013
3 Network Of Volunteer Teachers Spreading The Spirit Of Volunteerism Erôforrás Alapítvány United Way Hungary is committed to increasing the number of volunteers mobilized each year. By training further 130 teachers in 2013, we made important steps towards our long term objective of establishing a nationwide network of volunteer teachers in Hungary. This initiative allows us to look beyond the amazing success of our Child Safety Program and will help us implement further education related projects in Hungary, in the future. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR 2013
3 Corporate Volunteer Days Spreading The Spirit Of Volunteerism United Way Hungary is committed to providing opportunities for employee volunteering. In co-operation with Citibank 120 volunteers undertook the interior renovation of a children s home, making a significant contribution to the improvement of the living conditions of 220 children. 18 Celanese volunteers helped the Károlyi István Gyermekközpont, Fót organize a two-day event, in which 300 children and 200 teachers participated. Though coming from different companies, our volunteers shared one mission: giving their time to create a better life for the communities involved. Volunteering In Our Everyday Operations Volunteering is part of our everyday business. We work in co-operation with nearly 45 volunteers who add great value to our activities. As well, it instills great pride and appreciation knowing that they make a real difference. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR 2013
4 Promoting The Culture Of Giving Workplace Fundraising Campaigns United Way Hungary has always been the only non-profit organization in the country with the ability and expertise to organize workplace fundraising campaigns. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR 2013 In 2013 we had payroll campaigns at 16 corporations, involving 440 individual donors, making substantial contributions to realize 17 local community projects. Channeling Donations In 2013 we managed Citibank s donation program supporting four NGOs working in the field of education, reaching beneficiaries nationwide. In December 2013 the Budapest Bank For Békéscsaba Program was successfully launched, providing substantial support to several educational and cultural programs developed and implemented by local civil organizations. Through a public tender process 13 NGOs were selected, the total number of potential beneficiaries in the region is expected to go as high as , the programs will finish in 2014.
4 Our Own Fundraising Activities Gala Dinner and Charity Auction On the 19th of October 2013, we organized the United Way Gala Dinner for the ninth time. We invited leaders from the civil and corporate sectors. Beyond enabling us to give a reassurance to our partners that United Way Hungary in an accountable and transparent way - contributes to making significant changes for the better in the Hungarian society. This event is also a special occasion for us to deepen our relationship with our partners and at the same time, to ask them to give us further support and take part in our charity auction. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR 2013 Individual Donors We are grateful for all our individual donors supporting us in any way, including 1% income tax. Corporate Donors We have a large corporate donor base with corporate partners committed to our foundation who help our work with a continued support.
5 Inclusive Playground In Leányfalu Floods in 2013 caused widespread and severe damages to the houses and facilities alongside the Danube. As part of the recovery efforts United Way Hungary refurbished a playground originally initiated and built by a local civil movement, but the floods washed some of its parts away and damaged several equipments. In order to promote and encourage inclusive play United Way Hungary in co-operation with Baptista Szeretetszolgálat also installed some new equipments allowing all children, including those with special needs play together. The refurbished playground was opened in October, The project was financially supported by United Way Worldwide. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR 2013
