Jets as Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards makes his initial appearance against his former squad. Edwards patrolled the sidelines for the Jets for five seasons ( ) and led that club to the playoffs three times, the highest total of any coach in that franchise s history. Edwards led KC to the postseason in his initial season as Chiefs head coach in 2006, making him one of just five field generals in league history to take two different franchises to the playoffs in his inaugural season with that club. The Jets also qualified for the postseason in 2006 under a first-year head coach as Eric Mangini guided New York to a 10-6 record and an AFC Wild Card berth. However, both the Chiefs and Jets have struggled in Kansas City is 4-11 and is attempting to snap an eight-game losing streak. The Chiefs are coming off a loss at Detroit (12/23). Kansas City has won two straight regular season finales and hopes to make it three in a row. Edwards owns a 4-2 career mark in the last game of the regular season as an NFL head coach. The Jets are 3-12 on the year and enter this week s contest following a 10-6 loss at Tennessee (12/23). New York has also won its last two regular season finales. Chiefs nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 813 career catches and can make history on Sunday. Gonzalez needs just three more receptions to bypass TE Shannon Sharpe (815) for the most catches by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez already owns the league record for TD catches by a tight end (66) and needs eight more receptions to register the second 100-catch season of his career (102 in 2004). He is also one game shy of tying Hall of Fame TE Kellen Winslow (24) for the most 100-yard receiving contests by a tight end in league annals. DE Jared Allen (13.5 sacks) is the first Chiefs Pro Bowl defensive end since Neil Smith in 95. Allen needs just one more sack to join Smith, LB Derrick Thomas and DE Art Still as the fourth player in franchise annals with 14.5 or more sacks in a season. Allen ranks third in the league in sacks and is poised to post the franchise s best sack total since Smith led the league with 15.0 in 93. Allen also owns a pair of TD receptions in WR Dwayne Bowe (D1-07) has already established Chiefs rookie records with 69 catches for 982 yards. The LSU product needs just 18 yards to become the seventh NFL rookie since 90 to produce a 1,000-yard receiving season. REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the 60s and actually coined the term Super Bowl. As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact that league has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt s humble styles, the letters LH are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC s jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player. TE TONY GONZALEZ S RECORD-SETTING CAREER Nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 66 career TD catches, the most by a tight end in NFL history. 7 A day after sitting on a charter flight for nearly seven hours waiting out a snowstorm, the Chiefs began the game slowly. After watching the Lions build a 19-0 lead, Kansas City rallied to get within two points at before eventually falling at Ford Field in Detroit. The Lions would score in all three phases of the game in the early going. First, an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive concluded with an 11-yard scoring run from RB T.J. Duckett. Then, P Dustin Colquitt had a punt blocked for the first time in his career as Lions TE Casey FitzSimmons broke through the middle of the line to bat down the kick. The ball would spin out of the end zone for a safety as the Lions took a 9-0 lead. Detroit K Jason Hanson knocked in a 46-yard field goal on the ensuing possession to push the Lions ahead Before the scoring binge was over Detroit LB Paris Lenon intercepted a QB Brodie Croyle pass and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown and a 19-0 lead midway through the second stanza. To make matters worse, QB Brodie Croyle injured his hand on the play while trying to make a touchdown-saving tackle. With KC s starting QB unable to return, Damon Huard stepped under center and began leading the comeback. Despite losing LT Damion McIntosh and RB Kolby Smith to injuries on the drive, Huard and company orchestrated a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. Newly-acquired RB Jackie Battle took over the running back duties and followed the lead of reserve LT Herb Taylor to score a three-yard TD on his first NFL carry. Kansas City S Bernard Pollard gave the ball right back to the offense when he intercepted a QB Jon Kitna pass. The Chiefs converted the turnover into points as Huard perfectly executed the two-minute offense. Four straight completions including a 21-yard strike to TE Tony Gonzalez pushed the ball deep into Lions territory. After WR Dwayne Bowe converted a third-and-four with a catch down to the one-yard line, Huard floated a TD pass to DE Jared Allen. The Pro Bowler s second TD of the season helped Kansas City cut a 19-0 deficit to at the half. Detroit tacked on a 20-yard Hanson field goal in the third quarter before the Chiefs went on the attack again. Following an impressive 10-play, 70-yard drive, the Chiefs scored their first fourth-quarter points since posting 15 such points vs. Green Bay (11/4). Huard completed seven-of-seven passes including a 34-yard touchdown pass on fourth down in which Bowe outleapt a Detroit defender in the end zone. The Chiefs would attempt a two-point conversion in an effort to tie the game, but Huard s pass was knocked down at the line of scrimmage leaving the score A late Detroit field goal gave the Chiefs too little time to comeback as their final possession ended at the Detroit 30-yard line. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez posted his 23rd 100-yard receiving game with a 10-catch, 133-yard performance. 12 LAST TIME Chiefs 27, Jets 7 September 11, 2005 Arrowhead Stadium 78,014 N.Y. JETS KANSAS CITY Kansas City dominated both sides of the ball on Opening Day and cruised to a 27-7 win over the N.Y. Jets. The complete effort featured a Chiefs defense that forced three turnovers and an offense that racked up nearly 200 rushing yards. The Chiefs unleashed their vaunted two-headed rushing attack as the duo of RBs Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson combined for 195 yards and three TDs on the day. On the opening drive Holmes ripped off a 35-yard run, only to be followed up by a 35-yard touchdown burst from Johnson. After the Chiefs defense forced a Jets punt, Kansas City ground out a 12-play, 95-yard drive that was finished off with a rugged three-yard TD run from Holmes. QB Trent Green went six-for-six for 87 yards on the drive, as the Chiefs went ahead The defensive improvement was impossible to ignore vs. the Jets. The overall upgrade was highlighted by big plays from several newcomers including CB Patrick Surtain, S Sammy Knight, as well as LBs Derrick Johnson and Kendrell Bell. Sacks from Knight, Derrick Johnson and DE Jared Allen all resulted in Pennington fumbles as the Chiefs harassed the opposing QB all afternoon. The Jets five first-half drives featured five fumbles (one lost), an INT by Surtain and three punts. After a 41-yard FG from K Lawrence Tynes put the Chiefs ahead 17-0 in the second quarter, Surtain brought the Arrowhead crowd to its feet again when he picked off QB Chad Pennington and returned the INT 53 yards to the Jets 22-yard line. The Jets would threaten several times in the second half, but kept coming up empty. Chiefs DE Eric Hicks thwarted one of the drives when he blocked a field goal attempt. Kansas City also made a goal-line stand midway through the fourth quarter, forcing NYJ to turn the ball over on downs at the KC two-yard line. Leading 17-0, Kansas City kept the pressure on with a 38-yard field goal, then another TD from Larry Johnson early in the fourth quarter. Johnson, who finished with 110 yards on just nine carries (12.2 avg.), bulled through the N.Y. Jets defense from four yards out to put Kansas City up Kansas City s defense finally surrendered a late TD as backup QB Jay Fiedler hit TE Chris Baker for a 23-yard score with just 0:29 left to make the final score GAME NOTES The Chiefs registered their 200th all-time victory at Arrowhead in preseason, regular season and postseason play. For just the seventh time in team history, the Chiefs defense did not permit a rushing first down. It marked the first time the Chiefs had accomplished that feat since doing it in a win vs. St. Louis (12/8/02). RB Larry Johnson registered his fourth career 100-yard rushing game with 110 yards. Johnson scored a pair of rushing TDs, marking his sixth consecutive game with two or more total TDs (rushing & receiving). He also extended his streak of games with a rushing TD to seven consecutive games. KC L. Johnson, 35-yard run (Tynes kick) (3-75, 1:21). KC Holmes, 3-yard run (Tynes kick) (12-95, 6:57). KC Tynes, 41-yard field goal (7-56, 2:58). KC Tynes, 38-yard field goal (5-14, 2:02). KC L. Johnson, 4-yard run (Tynes kick) (7-66, 2:57). NYJ Baker, 23-yard pass from Fiedler (Nugent kick) (11-78, 1:35).
