1 JOE GIBBS RACING: NASCAR Timeline April 1991 Joe Gibbs and business partner Don Meredith meet Hendrick Motorsports general manager Jimmy Johnson and racing legend Richard Petty, among others, to discuss forming a Winston Cup team. June 1991 Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) acquires sponsorship from Interstate Batteries to run the full Winston Cup schedule in July 1991 JGR hires driver Dale Jarrett and crew chief Jimmy Makar. August 1991 Team members begin reporting for work at the original home of JGR on Harris Boulevard in Charlotte, N.C. The team leases shop space and engines from Hendrick Motorsports. September 1991 First racecars are built. The team has 18 crew members. January 1992 First racecars take to the track during GM testing at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. February 1992 First Winston Cup race for JGR. Jarrett starts 35 th and finishes 36 th due to an accident after 91 laps. July 1992 J.D. Gibbs (Gibbs oldest son) and Todd Meredith (Don Meredith s son) join JGR full-time. February 1993 Jarrett scores first Winston Cup victory for JGR in the Daytona 500. The win comes exactly one year after JGR made its Winston Cup debut. Joe Gibbs retires as head coach of the NFL s Washington Redskins after 12 seasons, having guided March 1993 the team to three victories in its four Super Bowl appearances.
