1 JKI Julius Kühn Insititut Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants Institute for Crop and Soil Science (JKI PB) The Institute for Crop and Soil Science of the Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants (JKI) ( delivers competent contributions on international level. The research fields cover the research and consultancy demand of the Ministry for Nutrition, Agriculture and Consumer Protection with view to sustainable plant nutrition and soil science that produces high quality foodstuffs, warrants natural resources and preserves nature and environment. This requires the innovative development of strategies to reduce the input of nutrients crop and site specifically. Within the scope of Baltic Manure JKI will act as the leader of WP 4 Standardisation of manure types with focus on phosphorus. Among the activities carried out to accomplish the objectives stated in WP 4 is the assessment of the P supply of agricultural soils in the Baltic Sea Region in relation to land use systems as well as the evaluation of critical P contents in soils. Energetic balances of the chemical and microbial turnover of P will be established in order to describe different P pools and to prognose sitespecific P fluxes in relation to varying environmental conditions in the Baltic Sea Region. The BOundary LIne DEvelopment System (BOLIDES), which was developed in the Institute for Crop and Fig. 1: Sampling on a field in the BSR to assess the spatial variability of available P amounts in the soil Soil Science, will be applied to calculate upper boundary line functions by defined mathematical routines. Thus truly site specific optimum P ranges can be determined locally so that P fertiliser rates can be adjusted accordingly. Since researchers of the Institute for Crop and Soil Science are pioneers of Precision Agriculture and leading experts in the field of site specific nutrient management, algorithms for a site specific, variable rate application of solid and liquid manure as well as manure based recycling fertilisers will be developed and contribute to the formulation of site specific advisory models for farmers concerning the use of manure or manure based fertilisers in the Baltic Sea region. In addition, P indices for relevant areas of the Baltic Sea region will be calculated to determine the risk of P loss from those spaces to water bodies. Another objective is the chemical analysis of soil samples as well as the determination of the chemical composition of manure and manure based recycled Fig. 2: Mixing of stall manure before sampling fertiliser products will be part of the project. The gained knowledge of the characteristics of treated manure will be used to classify the products according to the current EU regulation on fertilisers and to harmonise the use of manure and manure based fertilisers according to the Code of Good Agricultural Practice (GAP).
2 Besides the partnership in Baltic Manure, JKI PB participates in other related projects which focus on problems of the Baltic Sea Region and the phosphorus challenge: JKI PB is lead partner of the sector agriculture of the EcoRegion project ( The project aims at developing the Baltic Sea Region into the world's first EcoRegion, where economical growth goes hand in hand with environmental integrity and social justice. JKI PB was among other tasks responsible for the composition of the Perspectives Agriculture entitled Sustainable agriculture in the Baltic Sea Region in times of peak phosphorus and global change in which policies, projects and practices for a sustainable development in agriculture in the Baltic Sea Region were presented by different international experts. Relevant aspects of P in agriculture are summarised from regional and sectoral point of view in the Perspectives Agriculture (Fig. 3). The significance of developments in tourism, local food production and farm management practices are outlined with regard to minimising P losses to the Baltic Sea. Fig. 3: The EcoRegion Perspective Sustainable agriculture in the Baltic Sea Region in times of peak phosphorus and global change International experts who already contributed the Perspectives Agriculture and other leading scientists are currently preparing a book entitled Phosphorus: 100% zero which deals with the topics P scarcity, excessive P loads on soils with intensive livestock farming and the safe and sustainable use of different P from secondary raw materials. JKI PB will provide guidelines for site specific P fertiliser recommendations in relation to land use systems, one of the tasks of WP4 in Baltic Manure. Addressees of this book will be besides scientists, advisors and farmers policy makers who are involved in the implementation of the Baltic Sea Action Plan. JKI PB is also partner of the Global TraPs project ( which focuses on the sustainability of future P use. Aim of the project is to bring together researchers from various disciplines with an interest in phosphorus ( Science ) and producers and users of P ( Practice ) to work in nodes organized around the global P supply. This should help to answer the project guiding question: What new knowledge, technologies and policy options are needed to ensure that future phosphorus use is sustainable, improves food security and environmental quality and provides benefits for the poor?
