17 EXPECT SUCCESS! Understanding and Supporting Behavioral Challenges that Impact Learning, Social Competence, and Academic Progress Behavioral Challenges occur on a continuum and include those that prevent a student from participating in educational opportunities, limit social interaction or interfere with academic progress. These behaviors could be those that are disruptive and dangerous, however, concerning behaviors also include those that are passive, such as the student that does not participate or does not complete academic assignments. State Support Teams Region 2 and 3 and the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI) are providing a series of four workshops (October 2014-February 2015) that will build participants knowledge and skills to be able to examine behavioral situations that challenge learning and create a proactive plan for intervention. The resulting plan is an extension of current interventions and building-wide support for those students that require more individualization. The process begins with an expanded functional behavior assessment that includes examining factors and underlying issues that may trigger or reinforce the challenging behaviors. During the workshop, participants will also have an opportunity to review a variety of evidence-based strategies that address issues that lead to challenging behaviors. Examples and case studies will be used to demonstrate the concepts and process. 21 Refining Your Practice: Curriculum Mapping and Assessment Techniques Day 1 Curriculum Mapping: All educators should be familiar with what a student learns from Kindergarten through ages to ensure that students can leave public education with the knowledge, skills and tools for life after school. Teachers of students with low incidence and significant cognitive disabilities are often challenged to meet the demands of learners with a wide range of skills and needs. These same teachers often teach students with a 3-5 year range of grade levels across all subject areas. With all of these guidelines in mind, very specific planning is required in preparation for teaching students who qualify to take the Alternate Assessment. This training is designed to assist teachers in building a scope and sequence for yearly content coverage using Ohio s Academic Content Standards (OACS) and Extended Standards (OACS-E) with embedded transition standards and skills. Day 2 Assessment: This presentation provides a detailed overview on how assessments drive instruction for learners with LI/SCD. Samples will include assessment types and supports for access, including assistive technology. Participants will be challenged to analyze when and how they are assessing throughout the school day. Assessments should be aligned to and measure student knowledge of grade level standards, functional skill standards and IEP goals and objectives.
