2 Part 1 Authority The curriculum for the Master s Programme in English Studies, the 2008 Curriculum, has been drawn up under the authority endowed by: Section 24 of Executive Order no. 814 of 29 June 2010 on Bachelor s and Master s Programmes at Universities (the Study Programme Order), Section 27 of Executive Order no. 857 of 1 July 2010 on University Examinations (the Examination Order), and Section 38 of Executive Order no. 233 of 24 March 2011 about Admissions, etc. for Bachelor s and Master s Programmes at Universities (the Admission Order). The curriculum for the Master s Programme in English Studies, the 2008 Curriculum, belongs under the Study Board for English, Germanic and Romance Studies and the Corps of Examiners of English. Part 2 Purpose and structure 1. Prescribed period of study The Master s Programme in English Studies is a two-year full-time study programme prescribed to 120 ECTS credits. It comprises the basic subject, i.e. 90 ECTS credits in constituent subject elements, including the Master s thesis, and 30 ECTS credits in Master s elective studies. (2) The Master s Programme in English Studies which provides students with the academic competence needed to acquire teaching qualifications for Danish upper-secondary schools (the concentration aimed for the Danish upper-secondary school), comprises the basic subject, i.e. 75 ECTS credits in constituent subject elements, including the Master s thesis, and 45 ECTS credits within the Masterʼs minor sobject in continuation of the Bachelor s programme s elective studies aimed for the Danish upper-secondary school. (3) For students with Bachelor s programme s elective studies aimed for the Danish upper-secondary school corresponding to 60 ECTS credits, the Master s Programme in English Studies which provides the student with the academic competence to acquire teaching skills in upper-secondary schools (the concentration aimed for the Danish upper-secondary school), consists of the basic subject, 90 ECTS credits in constituent subject elements, including the Master s thesis and the Master s minor subject, 30 ECTS credits in continuation of the Bachelor s programme s elective studies aimed for the Danish upper-secondary school. (4) If the elective studies are taken outside of the Faculty of Humanities, the programme is extended, with certain exceptions, with a further 30 ECTS credits at the discretion of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. (5) European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits stipulate the study time prescribed for completion of a course of study. 60 ECTS credits correspond to one year of full-time study or 1,650 working hours. 2. Purpose The purpose of the Master s Programme is to increase the students academic knowledge and skills, and to improve the theoretical and methodical competences gained during the Bachelor s pro- 2

3 gramme. Students obtain greater independence and academic immersion via the advanced elements in the subject area s disciplines and methods, including training in research work and methodology. Students should be given the opportunity to develop consciously and purposefully their competences with reference to specialised vocational goals, including PhD studies. Part 3 Admission requirements and enrolment 3. Admission requirements A Bachelor s degree in English Studies at the University of Copenhagen confers the right to enrolment on the Master s Programme in English Studies directly after completion of the Bachelor s Programme. (2) Applicants who have not completed a Bachelor s programme that qualifies them for direct admission, but whose qualifications are assessed by the Study Board to be of an equivalent nature, may also seek admission. The Study Board is entitled to demand that the applicant pass supplementary tests in order to be admitted. (3) Students with non-danish qualifications and students from abroad who wish to take the programme must pass what corresponds to 1. a TOEFL score of 600 (on a paper-based test) 2. a TOEFL score of 100 (internet-based test) 3. an IELTS score of 7.0 or 4. Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English before commencing their studies. 4. Enrolment Students enrolled in the Master s Programme in English Studies on or after 1 September 2008 must follow this curriculum. (2) Enrolment in a study programme means that the student in question is covered by the rights and obligations stipulated for that programme. Enrolment entitles the student to sit for exams set as part of the programme. The student is personally responsible for matriculating properly. Part 4 Technical requirements pertaining to study 5. Reading texts in a language other than Danish The student must be capable of reading English texts at academic level. 6. The concept of the standard page A standard page in an exam syllabus (of modern, Western texts) or home assignments/master s thesis corresponds to 2,400 keystrokes, including spaces. When calculating the number of keystrokes of home assignments, notes are included but not cover pages, bibliographies and appendices. (2) If audiovisual material is submitted, one minute of playing time corresponds to one standard page. (3) The following guidelines apply when calculating the extent of other types of material: Prose A standard page of prose post-1750 = approx. 2,400 keystrokes (incl. letters, punctuation and spaces). A standard page of prose = approx. 1,200 keystrokes. 3

4 A standard page of prose = approx. 900 keystrokes. A standard page of prose pre-1100 = approx. 300 keystrokes. A standard page of prose written in difficult language (e.g. dialect) = approx. 1,200 keystrokes. Poetry A standard page of poetry post-1750 = 15 lines. A standard page of poetry = 12 lines. A standard page of poetry = 9 lines. A standard page of poetry pre-1100 = 3 lines. A standard page of poetry prose written in difficult language (e.g. dialect = 12 lines. 7. Writing and spelling skills When written home assignments and Master s thesis are assessed, both in Danish and in other languages, the students writing and spelling skills (as documented in the work submitted) must be included in the overall assessment of the performance, although the academic content will be given the most weighting. Part 5 Title and competence profile 8. Title Graduates from the Master s Programme are entitled to use the title cand.mag. i engelsk or Master of Arts (MA) in English Studies. (2) If the Master s elective studies consist of a formal study pattern, the student is entitled to use the title Master of Arts in English Studies with Elective Studies in, for example, Cultural Dissemination. (3) If the programme consists of subject elements that together form a concentration, graduates have the right to the title Master of Arts in English Studies with the chosen concentration. 9. Competence profile for a Master s degree graduate The Master s Programme in English Studies provides students with a deep insight into important aspects of the literature, history and culture of the English-speaking countries It also develops the students ability to express themselves in English on an academic level. While working on their theses, students will acquire expert knowledge of a specialised subject area, and learn to adopt an analytical approach to an academic problem and to structure and present extensive material. Graduates in English Studies possess: in-depth knowledge of the English language and of the styles and genres of literature in the English language high-level insight into historical and cultural developments in selected parts of the Englishspeaking world exhaustive knowledge of selected English-language works and authors. Graduates English Studies are able to: produce well-structured, descriptive and discursive texts in correct, idiomatic English, and express themselves orally in varied and correct English analyse and understand complex English-language texts and discuss their historical, cultural and aesthetic characteristics collate and independently process material about language, culture and socio-economic conditions communicate the content and ideas contained in material in English. 4

5 In a vocational context, graduates are capable of: teaching advanced pupils/students in English (e.g. in upper-secondary schools and colleges of education), drafting teaching materials for English teaching, and organising and running business courses in language and cultural competence providing advice on language and translating various types of texts in a professional context, except in circumstances that require a state-authorised translator conducting documentation work regarding conditions in the English-speaking world conducting independent research and writing reports preparing manuscripts, e.g. in the publishing industry handling demanding cultural-dissemination assignments, information work, export advice and consultancy, e.g. in public-sector institutions, print and electronic media, creative industries and the business world in general. Finally, the Master s degree qualifies graduates for postgraduate studies, including PhD programmes. Part 6 Structure of the programme 10. The Master s Programme in English Studies and its concentrations The Master s Programme in English Studies consists of the concentrations described below: The Master s Programme in English Studies (10 a) The Master s Programme in English Studies with a concentration aimed for the Danish uppersecondary school (10 b) The Master s Programme in English Studies with a concentration in Cultural Identities in Europe (10 c) The Master s Programme in English Studies with a concentration in Translation studies (10 d). 10 a. The Master s Programme in English The Master s Programme in English Studies (Kandidatuddannelsen i Engelsk) consists of modules within the basic subject with the option of Master s elective studies worth in both the first and second semesters. (2) The third semester consists exclusively of modules within the basic subject area. (3) The programme includes 45 ECTS in selective subjects within the basic subject area. Either Module 2 or Module 3 can be replaced by Module 5, Academic Internship (cf. 11). (4) The Master s elective studies may be chosen from outside the basic subject area. In the basic subject, students can opt for Module 12 and 13, Elective Study A and B in English Studies (cf. 11). (5) The programme concludes with a 30-ECTS-credits thesis, which must be on a topic within English Studies. (6) At the discretion of the Study Board, the thesis may be extended to 60 ECTS credits if it is experimental in nature. The English language (the history of the English language, grammar, phonetics, usage, the relationship between English and Danish, etc.) B. Literature in English in the broadest sense, including film, theatre, TV, etc. C. Literary theory and literary criticism, with a particular focus on literature in English. D. Political and socio-economic conditions (historical and/or contemporary) in countries where English is the main language. E. Non-literary art forms in English-speaking countries. 6

7 F. The relationship of the English-speaking world to culture and society in Denmark (or other countries). G. Communication of knowledge and skills in one or more of the above fields. H. The studies may also include fundamental theories and results in academic fields such as translation, linguistics, communications, history, philosophy, women s studies, sociology, economics, psychology, educational theory and practice, and computer science, as well as other subjects and academic disciplines that have a natural relationship to English Studies. 10 b. The Master s Programme in English Studies with concentration aimed for the Danish uppersecondary school The Master s Programme in English Studies with upper-secondary-school concentration (Kandidatuddannelsen i Engelsk med gymnasierettet profil) consists of modules within the basic subject as well as the Master s elective studies, which are the continuation of the Bachelor s programme s elective studiers aimed for the Danish upper-secondary school. (2) The Masterʼ minor subject is organised in such a way that are allocated in the first semester and 30 ECTS credits in the second semester. (3) The programme includes in selective subject within the basic subject area. (4) The programme concludes with a 30-ECTS-credits thesis, which must be on a topic within English Studies. As far as possible, it must combine the basic subject and the elective studies, with an emphasis on the basic subject. (5) At the discretion of the Study Board, the thesis may be extended to 60 ECTS credits if it is experimental in nature. This module can be replaced by Module 5, Academic Internship (cf. 11) 10 c. The Master s Programme in English Studies with Concentration in Cultural Identities in Europe The Master of Arts in English Studies with Concentration in Cultural Identities in Europe is a combination of the basic subject and the elective study Cultural Identities in Europe. 15 ECTS credits of the elective study are earned in the first semester and in the second semester. (2) The programme includes 45 ECTS credits in selective subject within the basic subject area. Either Module 2 or Module 3 can be replaced by Module 5, Academic Internship (cf. 11). (3) The programme concludes with a thesis (30 ECTS credits), which must be on a topic within English Studies. The thesis must be on a topic that combines the basic subject and the concentration. (4) At the discretion of the Study Board, the thesis may be extended to 60 ECTS credits if it is experimental in nature. (5) This specialisation provides students with: deeper insight into key subjects within European cultural history, with a view to placing the Master s Programme s basic subject area in a wider European context greater understanding of Europe s cultural and linguistic complexity, with special emphasis on the contrasting and comparative features that have characterised development in Europe past and present enhanced knowledge of Europe s global role and the way in which it has changed 8

9 the theoretical and methodological tools to study the chosen topics about Europe s cultural history in an interdisciplinary manner, and in a way that ensures both a long-term and more indepth perspective. The Master s Programme in English Studies with Concentration in Translation Studies The Master of Arts in English Studies with Concentration in Translation Studies is a combination of the basic subject and the elective study Translation Studies. of the elective study are earned in the first semester and in the second semester. (2) The concentration can be strengthened by the student replacing from the basic subject with a freely chosen topic within the range of the concentration or Module 11, Translationrelated Internship (cf. 11), instead of Module 3. (3) The programme includes 45 ECTS credits in selective subject within the basic subject area. Module 5, Academic Internship, cannot be chosen as selective subject if Module 11 is chosen (cf. (2)). (4) The programme concludes with a thesis (30 ECTS credits). The thesis must be on a topic that combines the basic subject and the concentration. (5) At the discretion of the Study Board, the thesis may be extended to 60 ECTS credits if it is experimental in nature. (6) The translation concentration aims to develop competences that can be used: in translation work related to, for example, literature, academic literature in the humanities, journalism, online texts, and film and television productions in a publishing house (editing, reviewing, language revision, etc.) as an information and communications officer for public- and private-sector organisations engaged in international and multicultural work. Students gain the competences to: account for translation theory that is relevant to practice engage in practical, translation-related activities, including both actual translations and translation criticism (in different genres and media), that incorporate theoretical reflections on and critical attitudes to the many contexts in which translation and mediation between languages and cultures are key factors develop in-depth knowledge of the connection between a country s history and language acquired during the Bachelor s programme solve translation, subtitling and editing tasks that presuppose theoretical and wide-ranging knowledge of language and culture. The programme s modules Modul 1: Frit valgt emne 1 Module 1: Free Topic 1 Competency objectives for the module On successful completion of the module, the student is capable of conducting a reflective and independent analysis of central issues within an academic topic discussing issues related to a selected academic topic and understanding the significance of the topic in a broader academic context positioning the chosen topic in a relevant theoretical context that takes into account the methodology of the field concerned communicating academic content and discussing in a concise and well-documented manner, as per academic norms. Frit valgt emne 1 (konstituerende, valgfag) (fagelement HENK03611E) Free Topic 1 (constituent, selective subject) (Subject element HENK03611E) Academic objectives Type of instruction and class work The examinee will be able to: discuss central academic issues in the chosen topic in a concise and nuanced manner position the chosen topic in relation to a wider academic context discuss the chosen topic in relation to relevant theories and academic methods present academic content in a clear and discursive manner as a basic language objective, express himself/herself in a coherent and understandable manner with a high level of syntactical, orthographical and idiomatic accuracy, using a varied and sophisticated vocabulary operate consistently according to customary academic conventions, paying due heed to layout, notes, references, quotes and bibliographies. Class instruction, with particular emphasis on reading primary and secondary texts, oral discussion and developing oral proficiency in English. Syllabus History and social studies: standard pages. Literature: 1,000-1,300 standard pages. Literary theory and linguistics: a minimum of 400 and a maximum of 550 standard pages. The exam syllabus must be approved by the teacher. Form of examination A: The syllabus is handed in with the exam paper. Form of examination B: The syllabus must be handed in at the exam office at the date set by the department. Form of examination C: The syllabus is set by the examiner. 13

14 Exam provisions The Study Board sets one of three forms of examination for a given course: Form of examination A: Written home assignment, optional subject. Assessment form:. Exam language: English. Grading:. Extent: standard pages. Exam aids: All exam aids are permitted. Form of examination B: Oral presentation, optional subject, with material (synopsis) Assessment form:. Exam language: English. Grading:. Extent: 30 minutes including grading. Exam aids: The synopsis and the syllabus specified. Special regulations governing form of examination B: During the first part of the examination, the student gives a presentation of the selected topic, based on a synopsis. The presentation, which lasts a maximum of 10 minutes, is followed by dialogue between the examiner and the examinee about the problem chosen in relation to the overarching subject area. This part of the examination can involve the subject area as a whole as well as the associated syllabus. The synopsis counts 1/3 in the assessment. Definition of synopsis The purpose of a synopsis for an oral exam is to allow the examinee to present and discuss a selected topic within a wider subject area. A synopsis is understood to be a written draft (max. four standard pages), containing: 1. A description of the selected topic/problem and its definition in relation to the subject area as a whole. 2.
