6 Briennerstrasse München Phone Fax info@roebbig.de Set of 16 thimbles Meissen, c As early as the 14 th century French goldsmiths adorned thimbles with the coats-of-arms or crests of the person who owned them, in the 16 th century, instead of the traditional tiny pits or hollows on the surface, they were decorated with wreathes of leaves and ornamental reliefs, and towards the end of the 16 th century even w ith inscriptions and precious stones. The decorative handcraft applied in making these functional little treasures led to an increase in their value and here there are clear parallels with snuffboxes while also changing their social significance and the manner in which they were used: from this time onwards giving the gift of a thimble was understood as an indication of affection. A tradition that was still very much alive in the 18 th century when the porcelain thimble emerged. Thimbles made of the white gold were hardly intended for practical daily use, but were admired fancy goods, carefully kept as costly gifts by the ladies who received them. Usually the crown of such thimbles is decorated with tiny pits, while the miniature décor on the sides can employ chinoiseries, harbour scenes, rural idylls, depictions of the par-force hunt or also bird motifs. A new group started in the warehouse, showing an elegant lady on a chair holding a coffee cup in her hand, while the left is being kissed by a fine male person; behind the woman is a blackamoor page holding a plate on a tall stem and offering it. Because it was such a difficult piece to make there remains much to be finished in the next months.
