1 Curriculum Guide (Course starting in Fall 2017) Updated 03/24/2016 The Jefferson Community & Technical College Paramedic program has been issued a Letter of Review by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This letter is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation Standards through the Letter of Review Self Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the NREMT's Paramedic credentialing examination(s). However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation. I. General Overview: Paramedic Program at JCTC is a full-time Associate of Applied Degree Program, which combines academic and laboratory courses with high technology clinical instruction. The program is housed on the Downtown Campus in the Health Science Building. Students must complete credit hours. The curriculum prepares the student to assume the responsibilities of a Paramedic including course work in general education, supporting sciences, and core program requirements. Interested students should contact any Paramedic Program faculty member for additional information. APPLICANTS MUST BE A CERTIFIED EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT) (NREMT or Commonwealth of Kentucky) TO BE ADMITTED TO CORE PROGRAM COURSES. Prospective students who intend to complete EMT training before the fall of 2017 are encouraged to attend advising sessions listed below. II. Admission Policies and Procedures: A. The College Prior to making program application, the student must first apply to the college. This can be done on-line or in-person on the first floor of the Jefferson Educational Center. The Paramedic Technology Program is a selective admission program. Admission to the College does not guarantee admission or automatic acceptance into the Paramedic Technology Program. B. The Program The maximum enrollment for each class is 20 students. The number of students accepted into the program is limited because a portion of the teaching is done in ambulances or hospitals that cannot accommodate large numbers of students. Additionally, enrollment in the program may be restricted due to limited facilities and/or faculty and program resources.
4 Candidate selection is based on various program standards. The program admission committee will select the most qualified candidates from the applicant pool. The most qualified candidates will receive an official written notification of acceptance. Those not accepted will be notified. All qualified students may apply. The minimum cumulative GPA for program admission is 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Student outcomes (pass/fail rate) as measured by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians cognitive examination may be inspected upon request. (The JCTC Paramedic Program is, at this time, anticipating its first graduating class in May of 2016 and will publish results as soon as they are available). Jefferson Community and Technical College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, religion, marital status, gender, handicap in employment, sexual orientation or activities as set forth in Title IX of the Educational Amendment of 1972, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of Paramedic work involves the provision of direct care for individuals and is characterized by the application of verified knowledge in the skillful performance of paramedic skills/functions. Therefore, in order to be considered for admission or to be retained in the program after admission, all applicants should possess the following: C. Technical Standards: 1. Sufficient visual acuity, such as is needed in the accurate preparation and administration of medications in many forms and for the observation necessary for patient assessment. 2. Sufficient auditory perception to receive verbal communication from patients and members of the health team and to assess health needs of people through the use of monitoring devices such as cardiac monitors, stethoscopes, intravenous infusion pumps, fire alarms, etc.; 3. Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination to respond promptly and to implement the skills, including the manipulation of equipment, positioning and lifting patients required in meeting health needs related to paramedic technology; 4. Sufficient communication skills (speech, reading, writing) to interact with individuals and to communicate their needs promptly and effectively, as may be necessary in the patient s/client s interest; 5. Sufficient intellectual and emotional functions to plan and implement care for individuals; and 6. Sufficient physical ability to lift patients of all weight size and handle heavy equipment.
5 D. Selection preference within the applicant pool: Selection of students into the program will be made by the president of the college or the president s designee after considering the recommendation of the Admissions Committee. Selection preference may be given to: Applicants with an ACT composite score of 21 or above; or comparable Compass scores according to KCTCS. Applicants who have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better (4.0 point scale) in 10 hours of college credit applicable to the paramedic program. Applicants who have completed the biological sciences (BIO-137 & BIO-139 or BIO 135) and medical terminology (AHS 115) courses listed in the paramedic curriculum with a grade of "C" or better. Applicants who have completed the general education requirements (English, Psychology, Heritage/Humanities, Math (105, 110,116 or 126) and Oral Communications etc. with a grade of "C" or better. Under-represented minority applicants within the population group. Note: Maintaining a policy of diversity in the selective admissions process is a compelling state interest (Grutter v. Bollinger, 539 U.S. 306, 2003). Applicants that have completed the Health Science Technology (core curriculum course) certificate I or I and II. Qualified applicants who are veterans, spouses, or families of military veterans, and workers who qualify under the Trade Adjustment Act. Applicants accumulating the highest possible pre-admission points will be accepted into the program. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all application material (i.e., college & program related material) is on file by days after pre-admission conference (date will be in student bulletin). VI. Formal Application Process and Deadlines: Students are accepted to the Paramedic Technology Program during the Spring semester for enrollment in the upcoming Fall semester. To officially apply for Fall 2017, applicants must attend one of the five Selective Admission Conferences During this conference, applicants will complete the required material and submit their application file. The applicants must submit a completed file (containing all documents) by January 1, Incomplete applications are subject to rejection from consideration.
6 Frequently asked questions: What do I bring to the Selective Admission Conference? An official transcript (or photocopy of the official transcript is permissible) is a requirement Photocopy of any official grade not reported on the official transcript Paper and pen to fill out application materials Copy of EMT certificate What tasks will I accomplish during the Selective Admission Conference? Each participant will complete an official program application form during the conference. Note: An application for admission to Jefferson Community and Technical College is NOT an application to the Paramedic Technology Program. Each participant will complete his/her transcript evaluation form and other information related to your application file. Applicants can ask questions and will receive assistance from the program faculty. The major purpose of the required Selective Admission Conference is to assist students in completing and submitting an accurate or complete application file.
