DISPOSAL OF WASTE (Reference: Waste Disposal, Safety Services Office, June 1997) WASTE MUST NOT BE GENERATED UNTIL A DISPOSAL ROUTE IS IDENTIFIED WASTE DISPOSAL ROUTE GENERAL Non-contaminated paper, plastic and metal Hand towels Contaminated paper; plastic disposables e.g. pipette tips, tubes, pipettes, disposable gloves. Recycling bins for paper, plastic and metal Landfill bins Autoclave bags in marked bins. Pipettes must be in a separate bag Sharps e.g. needles, blades, fine broken glass; ALL blood collection tubes (plastic and glass) Glass, including washed empty bottles, broken glassware; aerosol cans Tissue culture areas Burn bins (yellow plastic) for incineration. When full bins must be locked for disposal. N.B. chemicals must not be disposed of in these bins. Glass disposal bins Follow local arrangements CHEMICALS Dilute acids Non-hazardous aqueous solutions Flammable solvents (small volumes, miscible with water) Flammable solvents (large volumes, miscible with water) Flammable solvents (immiscible with water) Chlorinated solvents (keep separate from other solvents) CLINICAL WASTE BIOHAZARD WASTE RADIOACTIVE WASTE G.M. WASTE ALWAYS CONSULT SECTION SAFETY OFFICER/LSS & COSHH ASSESSMENT BEFORE DISPOSAL Flush down sink, diluting greatly with water. Flush down sink, diluting greatly with water, using a fume cupboard where possible. Stored in suitable, labelled container for disposal via the approved contractor. DISPOSAL VIA APPROVED CONTRACTOR CONSULT SECTION SAFETY OFFICER/LSS VIA APPROVED ROUTES, TO BE ARRANGED WITH RPS BEFORE WORK COMMENCES DISPOSAL AS PER RISK ASSESSMENT APPROVED BY G.M. SUB-COMMITTEE

CHEMICAL SPILL CLEAN-UP KIT Workers should consider how they would deal with a spill before using any chemical. COSHH forms & safety data sheets should be consulted and all workers should be familiar with the spill kit. All hazardous spills must be reported to LSS/Section Safety Officer as soon as possible. All items removed from the spill kit need to be reordered as soon as possible. KIT CONTENTS Absorption granules. Suitable for absorption of all types of chemical including oxidising & highly reactive materials. Granules bind liquids with volumes up to 75 times their weight. Indicator yellow = acid, dark green/blue = alkaline. Rubber gloves. (Nitrile & latex gloves available in all labs.) Safety specs Dustpan & brush Respirator Buckets/lids for disposal Mercury spill clean-up pads are available from LSS/section safety officer/lab manager DEALING WITH A CHEMICAL SPILL Only tackle spills you are sure you can deal with. Label and evacuate the spill area and get help if you have any doubt in your ability to safely clean up the spill. 1. Label, isolate and evacuate the spill area. 2. Obtain help and advice from appropriate staff as necessary. 3. Wear suitable protective clothing. If use of a respirator is required read the fitting instructions. 4. Sprinkle absorption granules on to chemical. 5. Sweep up & transfer to bucket. Seal, label & arrange disposal. 6. Clean the site of the spill thoroughly and ventilate the area. 7. Report the incident. To Use the Respirator 1. Adjust head cradle. 2. Place respirator over face fitting it comfortably on bridge of nose, then pull the head harness over the crown of the head. If necessary remove the respirator and re-adjust the head cradle to a comfortable fit and repeat step Take a bottom strap in each hand, place them at the back of the neck and hook the straps together. 4. Tighten the top strap first by pulling on the ends to achieve a comfortable and secure fit. Tighten bottom straps in a similar manner. (Strap tension may be decreased by pushing out on back side of buckles) 5. Perform positive pressure fit check. Place palm of hand over exhalation valve cover and exhale gently. If the face piece bulges lightly and no air leaks between the face and the face piece are detected, a proper fit has been achieved. If leaks are detected reposition the respirator and repeat the face fit check. This respirator cannot be used with beards.

SAFETY PICTOGRAMS HAZARD SYMBOLS Squares with black graphic symbols on an orange background. These mean 'beware of contents'. HAZARD WARNINGS on doors and objects. Black-edged triangles with stylised black symbols on a yellow background. These mean 'beware of adjacent hazard'. PROHIBITION NOTICES. A red circle and diagonal superimposed over a graphical symbol. These mean 'DON'T do something' which could be dangerous. MANDATORY INSTRUCTION. Blue circle with white graphical image. These mean 'you MUST do something' to behave safely. FIRE PRECAUTION NOTICE. Red square with white graphical symbol. These pinpoint the positions of fire alarms or fire-fighting equipment. EMERGENCY information. Green squares or rectangles with white graphical symbols. These indicate emergency escape routes, first aid facilities or emergency assembly points.

HAZARD SYMBOLS AND GUIDANCE PHRASES Hazard symbols are squares with black graphic symbols on an orange background. The symbols used either indicate physical property hazard to life EXPLOSIVE has priority over OXIDISING has priority over FLAMMABLE. TOXIC has priority over CORROSIVE has priority over HARMFUL. A maximum of two symbols only can be used, one of each type. The symbol chosen should be the one of highest priority. EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE HIGHLY FLAMMABLE FLAMMABLE Flash point < 0 C Flash point > 0 C & < 21 C Flash point > 21 C & < 55 C VERY CORROSIVE CORROSIVE (CAUSES BURNS) Skin necrosis in 3 minutes or under Skin damage in under 4 hours IRRITANT HARMFUL Non-corrosive that will cause inflammation in under 4 hours exposure Toxic substance with an LD75 of 0.2 to 2.0g/kg body weight, ie a toxic dose of ca. 14g for an adult male at the lower limit TOXIC LD75 > 25mg & < 250mg/kg body weight, ie toxic dose of ca. 1.8g at the lower limit VERY TOXIC LD75 < 25mg/kg body weight, ie toxic dose of < 1.8g for an adult male. Guidance phrases are also of two types: a) RISK (R) phrases which indicate the hazard, eg "toxic by inhalation". b) SAFETY (S) phrases which advise on how to minimise risk, eg "keep away from heat".

CHEMICAL CONTAMINATION. In the event of chemical contamination the procedure is as follows: Eyes: Irrigate thoroughly with water and/or sterile infusion saline (0.9%w/v sodium chloride) for at least 10 minutes. If discomfort persists obtain medical attention. Lungs: Remove from exposure, rest and keep warm. In severe cases obtain medical attention. Skin: Wash off skin thoroughly with soap and water. Remove contaminating clothing and wash before re-use. In severe cases obtain medical attention. Mouth: Wash out mouth thoroughly with water and give plenty of water to drink. Obtain medical attention. NEEDLESTICK/SHARP INJURY. 1. Encourage wound to bleed. 2. Wash with soap and water. 3. Dry and apply waterproof dressing. 4. Report incident to LSS/line manager/section safety supervisor. 5. Complete an accident form. 6. Contact occupational health.
