3 Tourism s Impact on the Florida Economy VISIT FLORIDA tracks four economic indicators to gauge the health of Florida s tourism industry. These indicators include: 1) tourism/recreation taxable sales, 2) direct travel- related employment, 3) the car rental surcharge, and 4) local tourist development taxes (a.k.a. bed taxes). Of the twelve categories comprising tourism/recreation taxable sales, restaurants/lunchrooms, admissions, and hotels/apartment/houses were responsible for approximately 86 percent of tourism/recreation taxable sales for the year.
