Eerste semester Blok 1 Self-regulation and emotion Curriculum: Instructor(s): Ms prof. dr. M. Boekaerts ECTS: 5.0 Level: 600 Term: 1st semester Block: Block I Course code:. Academic year: Language of instruction: English This course is designed to help students to develop deep understanding of a fundamental aspect of learning, namely self-regulation. Self-regulation is a complex phenomenon that is vital in all learning contexts. Students will read theoretical and empirical studies in the domain of self-regulation and emotion. The principles and mechanism of self-regulation will be used as tools to analyze current issues in education. Special attention will be devoted to the role that emotions play in self-regulation, to the relevance of various theoretical frameworks, to the validity of the assessment instruments used, the credibility of the results, and the validity of the conclusions. By the end of the course, the students should be able to (1) demonstrate in-depth understanding of selfregulation as applied to learning in formal and informal learning contexts, (2) interpret and utilize research results, (3) discuss and evaluate self-regulation processes and the factors that impact on the working of these processes, and (4) discuss and evaluate the implications of knowledge of these processes for educators, teachers, trainers, and policy makers. Achievement levels: 1; 3; 5; 6; 8; NB Language of instruction will be Dutch if only Dutch-speaking students participate. Methods of instruction Important objectives of the course are that students investigate the structure of self-regulatory processes and the match between those processes and various learning contexts. Hence, students will participate in a number of individual and cooperative learning activities, including reading and interpreting scientific articles, personal critical reflection, class discussions, oral presentations, and academic writing. The students will write a final reflection paper that will take the form of a conceptual review. On the basis of their reading, reflections and class discussions, they choose a specific context in which individuals learn and explore the self-regulatory processes that are necessary and sufficient to function well in that context. The focus of the conceptual review should be on the basic principles that underlie self-regulation research and practice in the selected context. Study material The articles used for this course are selected from The Handbook of Self-Regulation (Boekaerts, Pintrich & Zeidner, 2000) as well as from the following high impact journals: Educational Psychologist, Learning and Instruction, Applied Psychology: An International Review, and Educational Psychology Review.

All articles will be digitally available on Blackboard a few weeks before the beginning of the course. Boekaerts, M., Pintrich, P.R., & Zeidner, M. (2000). Handbook of Self-Regulation. San Diego, CA: Academic Press. Examination The final mark will be based on the quality of a group paper as well as on the student s active participation in class. Time table See website. Enrolment U-Twist registration is a requirement for ALL courses and exams. The deadline for course registration is 2 weeks before the first class; the deadline for exam registration is 1 week before the exam. Attendance without registration is forbidden!

Clinical assessment and treatment Curriculum: Instructor(s): Ms. dr. K. van de Vijfeijken, et al. ECTS: 10 Level: 500 s Semester: 1 st Block: 1 & 2 Course code: - Academic year : Language of instruction: Dutch Co-ordinator Ms. dr. K. van de Vijfeijken. During this course students in the master s specialisations Clinical Child and Adolescent Studies (Orthopedagogiek) and Learning Problems and Impairments (Leerproblemen) are so equipped in regard to theory and practice that upon completion of their study they will have adequate scientific background to be able to properly move through the diagnostic and treatment cycle. Students are familiarised with the scientific and cyclic character of the process of diagnosis and treatment. After completion of the course they have sufficient theoretical knowledge with regard to the psychopathology of children and youth and the various fields of work to effectively design a diagnostic scenario, draw up a prognosis and set up a treatment plan. Achievement levels: The curriculum in Clinical Assessment and Treatment builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in the following Bachelor courses: Theoretische Orthopedagogiek; Methoden van Klinische Diagnostiek, Diagnostiek en Assessment, Behandeling, Psychopathologie. Clinical Child and Adolescent Studies and Learning Problems and Impairments The course is followed by students in the master s specialisations Clinical Child and Adolescent Studies and Learning Problems and Impairments and consists of three sections: a general section (five required lectures and a literature examination); a seminar (12 required half-day sessions of 2.5 hours each and a test case); a specialisation. For students in Learning Problems and Impairments this is the course Diagnostics and treatment of learning problems and impairments. Students in Clinical Child and Adolescent Studies have a choice of three specialisations: Developmental disabilities, Neurodevelopmental disorders and Children and adolescents with psychosocial problems (for more information about these three specialisations, see below). Methods of instruction General section (students in Clinical Child and Adolescent Studies and Learning Problems and Impairments). The course begins with a general section comprising five required lectures for all students. These five lectures conclude with a literature examination. Content of lectures in general section Introduction and enrolment for specialisations :00-19:00

Behavioural therapy (diagnosis and treatment) :00-19:00 Family therapy (diagnosis and treatment) :00-19:00 Parental guidance (diagnosis and treatment) :00-19:00 Play therapy (diagnosis and treatment) :00-19:00 Examination :00-12:00 Seminars (students in Clinical Child and Adolescent Studies and Learning Problems and Impairments) This material is dealt with in greater depth in seminars. A seminar consists of a block of twelve half-day sessions of 2½ hours each (total 30 hours). The topics include: The social work cycle: general Interviewing (clinical assessment interview + advice) Diagnosis: Assessing intelligence and educational level Neuropsychological screening Personality questionnaires Personality testing: (projective techniques) Treatment: Prognosis, treatment planning Protocols in youth welfare work 2 half days 2 half days 1 half day 1 half day 1 half day 1 half day 4 half days Attendance at all sessions is required. If one is prevented from attending, one can not continue with the seminar. There is the possibility, if there is room, of being placed in another seminar. If that is not possible, then the student must wait until the course is offered again. The seminars take place in September and October; the last session is in de week of 15 October. One can register for a seminar via U-twist. There must be a minimum of 16 registrants for a seminar to go forward. There is room for a maximum of 20 students per seminar. All the seminars have the same organisation and content. Students themselves are responsible for assuring there is no conflict between their registration for a seminar and registration for the workgroups in Practice of Empirical Research, for which attendance is also required at all sessions. This will prevent overlapping schedules. Specialisation Students in Learning Problems and Impairments do their specialisation by following the course Diagnostics and Treatment of Learning Problems and Impairments (5 ECTS). Students in Clinical Child and Adolescent Studies follow one of the following three specialisations: Developmental disabilities Neurodevelopmental disorders Children and adolescents with psychosocial problems For Clinical Child and Adolescent Studies students the specialisation consists of 14 required lectures, a literature examination, participating in a clinical assessment via a one-way screen, a paper and the presentation of that paper in a mini-symposium. The lectures take place each week on Monday and Wednesday from 15:00-17:00. This means that the lectures span seven weeks (27 October through 10 December, 2008). Attendance at the lectures is required. The presentation at a mini-symposium takes place on 19, 21 and 26 January, During the clinical assessment via a one-way screen students run through all the steps of the diagnostic cycle, including the prognosis and setting up a therapeutic plan, based on a case drawn from actual practice. The work is performed in groups of 10 students. This component

consists of eight half-days of four hours each (required attendance). The period in which the demonstration investigation takes place runs from 20 October, 2008 through 31 January, Study material Literature for the examination for the general section on 24 October 2008 (students in Clinical Child and Adolescent Studies and Learning Problems and Impairments): Verhulst, F.C. & Verheij, F.
