1 Welcome to Canada : (Foreign students) Canada is the second largest country in the world. Its territory spans over 10 millions square kilometres however it is thinly populated. Thirty million people live in Canada, mostly in the southern part of the country. There are ten provinces in Canada: Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Colombia, as well as three territories: Yukon, North West Territories and Nunavut. French and English are the two official languages. Why train in Canada? Because Canadian flight training and licences are widely recognised and flying in Canada is cheaper. Quebec. (Foreign Students) Quebec is the largest province in Canada. Most of the seven million people in Quebec live within the Saint Lawrence River valley. Montreal is the Province s largest city and attracts a lot of major aeronautical businesses such as Bombardier, Rolls Royce, Dowty, Bell, Textron, CAE, Pratt&Whitney. Dorval Aviation : Dorval Aviation is a charter company and a flighttraining center. We are certified by the Canadian Department of Transportation ( Transport Canada ) to issue the required training for ICAO approved licences and ratings. Our team is made of experienced instructors who will give you quality training, in French or in English. At Dorval Aviation, you will live a unique experience on the road to your flying goals! Our fleet includes three Cessna 172s and a Piper Navajo. Our multiengine aircraft is equipped with modern equipment such as Garmin 530 and 430 GPS, autopilot, flight director, weather radar, HSI, RMI All of these tools will provide you with the opportunity to acquire a realistic knowledge of IFR operations.. Dorval Aviation is the reference for students seeking a career in aviation as well as for those who just want to fly for leisure over the beautiful landscape of Quebec. For people looking for adventure, please call us to inquire about familiarization flights and aero tourism. *Definitions: ICAO= International Civil Aviation Organisation

2 The flight training environment : PAPI=Precision Approach Path Indicator Our school is based at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International airport (formerly called Dorval International airport). This airport offers a lot of advantages: - It is the only airport on the Island of Montreal, easily accessible via public transportation. - The airport is fitted with three runways opened day and night. - It is an international airport equipped with all the installations required for IFR training. - The school is located right next to the runways so taxi time is very short. - Several other airports are within a few minutes of flight, which allows optimizing training flights. - The Transport Canada examination center is located on the airport five minutes from the school. - All runways are equipped with an instrument approach: ILS, LOC BACK COURSE, NDB, and PAPI*. This environment includes everything required for your training within a controlled airspace. Definitions: VOR=VHF Omni directional Range (Radio navigation aid) NDB=Non-Directional Beacon (Radio navigation aid) ILS=Instrument Landing System

3 Medical Exam: Before starting your training you should take a medical test with a Transport Canada certified Aviation Medical Examiner. A list of Aviation Medical Examiners is available on the Transport Canada s web site: Students seeking a commercial pilot licence should take a Class 1 medical exam whereas students interested in a private pilot licence should take a Class 3 medical exam. Health Insurance: (Foreign students) As a foreign student you are not eligible under Canada s Social Protection Programs. As a consequence you must contract both Health and Personal Insurance. This should be taken care of before your arrival to Canada. Transportation: The school is easily accessible via bus or train. Both lines run all day long. If it is more convenient for you, you may also choose to buy a vehicle for the duration of your training and sell it before leaving. Our personal Welcome! Upon arrival, you will be assigned a Flight Instructor and he will further elaborate on your ground and flight training. Several evaluations at various stages of your training will insure constant progression. Housing (Foreign Students) There are many possibilities of housing in the immediate vicinity of Dorval Airport. It is also possible to take an apartment in downtown, without increasing the travel time. You can rent a 1 bedroom apartment for about $600 a month. All extra costs (electricity, heating, hot water) are usually included. You will have to arrange to pay for your own cable television and telephone

5 TRAINING PROGRAMS Each training program is developed based on the candidate s previous experience and desire, whether it is for a private license, a rating or a complete commercial course. Minimum age to start a private pilot training is 14, but the license will be issued at 17 years old. For a commercial pilot license, the age required is 18 years old. Ground Schools Ground schools are taught by multi-ifr certified instructors or airline pilots. A ground school (minimum of 40 ) is required by Transport Canada for the private and commercial pilot licenses. The following subjects are covered: Canadian aviation regulations Aerodynamics and flight theory Meteorology Systems, engines and airframes Flight instruments Theory of radio and electronics Navigation Operations Licensing Human factors and pilot decision making Flight training The flight training includes flight lessons as well as preparatory courses and pre-flight and post-flight briefings. Preparatory lessons, briefings and debriefings are given to better explain the flight maneuvers and the security aspects of every flight. Our practice area is located 7 NM south of the airport and is under complete radar coverage, which enhances the safety of your flights. The bilingual environment offered by the school allows the students to familiarize themselves with the different terms and expressions typical to the aviation world. Passing a flight test with a Transport Canada inspector completes each license or rating. The ground school takes place in the school s classrooms and your training will be closely monitored to insure that you are progressing at an optimal rate. In order to facilitate your learning process, we have a large and quiet classroom for the theoretical part of the course. We also have a number of smaller classrooms for individual ground training. Students are not allowed to write Transport Canada exams until they successfully complete the school s preparatory exams. The Transport Canada exams are given at the Ministry of Transport office by appointment only. The results are computer generated and available immediately.
