1 COOL SMART BOARD RESOURCES FOR EDUCATORS 1 *Teachers Love SMART Boards a website/blog that this educator has created for teachers to help them use technology to help students increase their ability to learn. The creator also offers some online courses for learning some new and innovative SMART Notebook applications to use in creating SMART presentations and lessons. His courses range from free to $6.95USD payable through PayPal. *An online version of magnetic poetry the possibilities to use this on your SMART Board are endless. *An online version of Paint that has many great tools that you can use to create backgrounds for your SMART notebook pages easy for kids to use too. ABCya! is a leader in free & exciting computer activities for elementary students to learn on the web. All educational computer games and activities were created or approved by certified teachers! Activities are modeled from primary grade lessons and enhanced to provide an interactive way to learn. The activities incorporate content areas such as math and reading while introducing basic computer skills. Many of the kindergarten and first grade games are equipped with sound to enhance understanding. You can also find great elementary holiday activities here! Phun Phonics An online phonics site that works well with your SMART Board has games and activities for grades K-6. (Some activities require keyboard input). Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, online version, works with a SMART Board. Stu s Double Jeopardy must download to computer but works with SMART Board and the newest version can be modified to 10 or 20 questions instead of 30! This is a site developed by a kindergarten teacher in South Carolina who uses a SMART Board in her kindergarten classroom. (if you use her lessons, please sign her guestbook and thank her!) 2 2 SEED by Schlumberger online science lab where kids can do virtual science experiments (for yr olds) Online Math Dictionary for kids Another online Science site that you can use with your SMART Board for grades 1-6 by Harcourt School Publishers called Science Up Close. Build Your Wild Self And the notebook file that goes with it (must be opened using SMART Notebook) ZAC is the first web browser developed specifically for children with autism, and autism spectrum disorders such as Asperger syndrome, pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), and PDD -NOS. We have made this browser for the children - for their enjoyment, enrichment, and freedom. Children touch it, use it, play it, interact with it, and experience independence through ZAC. This site offers an amazing collection of books to read online, it allows students to create and share their own books using very powerful authoring software for kids. This site is a perfect companion for the SMART Board since you can display the books your students are reading, scroll to any page quickly and easily, take notes, capture items into Notebook, etc. The possibilities are endless. Some of the features are free, but for more advanced options there is a monthly, 6 month to yearly fee. For Primary classrooms, this is a site to visit and share on a SMART Board to reinforce letter recognition and for just plain fun... Technology and Education Box Of Tricks (another website/blog that has lot s of neat ideas to look through and try in your classroom. It has a variety of technology ideas to use including podcasts, internet resources and interactive whiteboard. I would say mostly for older children but I have not had a chance to go through it a lot.

3 Using SMART Boards and Wordle There has been a flurry of posts in the edublogosphere about Wordle, a very useful tool that allows you to create word clouds from text. It s very simple to use: you just copy text in any language, paste it into Wordle and it will sift through it and create clouds with the most commonly occurring words in the text. You can then edit the shape, the colours and the font in the cloud and even remove words you don t like by right-clicking on them. 3 This is the site for Wordle you just need to go there and try it out. It is very neat and could have some interesting applications in all subjects. Spellingcity.com is a free spelling tool that can help you make teaching spelling more exciting. With online spelling games, spelling reviews, and spelling quizzes, your students can memorize those weekly spelling words while having fun, and you will have a new tool in your box for teaching spelling. (see the instruction sheet in this booklet) A site that has links to many K-3 SMART resources Pick a Word-Vocabulary-Smartboard Application from Scholastic.com iknowthat.com has interactive, multimedia educational games and activities for kids in preschool, kindergarten, and elementary grades. There are hundreds of fun educational games in math, language arts (phonics, spelling, reading and writing), social studies (geography and history), science, and the arts (art and music). Other games at the site help children develop problem solving skills and critical thinking skills. Resources available to Educators from the SMART Tech website Google Earth-Google Earth lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, from galaxies in outer space to the canyons of the ocean. You can explore rich geographical content, save your toured places, and share with others.

4 The SMART Notebook Community Library was developed to support the use of interactive white boards in the classroom. Many schools serving students who are deaf or hard of hearing have found this technology to positively impact their instruction and student learning. Currently all the files are specific to K-12 classroom curriculum and can only be opened in the SMART Notebook software program. 4 ReadWriteThink.org offers a collection of online Student Materials to support literacy learning in the K-12 classroom. These interactive tools can be used to supplement a variety of lessons and provide an opportunity for students to use technology while developing their literacy skills. Click on the name of each interactive for a brief description of the tool and a list of the ReadWriteThink lessons that use the tool. From there you'll also be able to directly access the tool and use it in your classroom. Berenstain Bears games and activities Primary Wacky Web Tales An interactive, online, build a story resource; asks students to use parts of speech to fill in the blanks. The Wide World of Verbs help students learn about Verbs! Do you love the I SPY books??? Here is a site that gives you I SPY pictures that you can use on your SMART Board!!! Very cool. Here is Scholastic s I SPY page of interactive I SPY pictures The Grammar Gorillas practicing Parts of Speech; Beginner Level that is only nouns and verbs and the next level that uses all parts of speech. What is Kerpoof? The answer to that is not so simple. Kerpoof is all about having fun, discovering things, and being creative. Here are just a few ways that you can use Kerpoof: Make artwork (even if you aren't good at drawing!) Make an animated movie (really! it's easy!) Earn Koins which you can trade for fun things in the Kerpoof Store Make a printed card, t-shirt, or mug Tell a story Make a drawing Vote on the movies, stories, and drawings that other people have made Ever find yourself obsessed with BUBBLE WRAP??? 6 Math TV - Video Word Problems The following math problems come from Math TV, a project whose goal is to help middle school students learn how to solve challenging word problems. Download You Tube Videos as a Flash File into a Notebook Lesson Head over to Tube Leecher, which is a website that allows you to download videos. You simply paste the URL of the YouTube video into the text box, click download and it will download the video into a Flash file onto your desktop. There is a YouTube Downloader that is a free download and very easy to use. Once you install this, it will create a short cut on your desktop. Simply bring up the interface when you are ready to download a video and copy and paste the URL, click download and it will download the video as Flash file. Here is a nice video that explains how to use the YouTube Downloader and also how to embed the video into a Notebook file. SCIENCE ONLINE This site was developed to address the Tennessee Science Frameworks, but is a wonderful resource for all K-8 science teachers.

7 7 Animated Text for your Notebook lessons: 1. TEXTANIM.com- just type your text, pick the font, size, pick your desired pattern (and there are several choices), etc., click generate and voila your wonderful animated text will appear for you to simply copy and paste it into your Notebook lesson. 2. Cooltext.com- Type your text, pick the image you want, choose the font, size, etc, and then click on render logo to see your creation. Copy and paste it into your SMART Notebook page and dazzle your students!! 3. FLAMINGTEXT.com- this site has a gallery list to the right of the page. Scroll down to see the animated options. Again you type in your text, make your choices for font, size, etc. and then click create logo to have the logo generated and ready for you to copy and paste into your SMART Notebook lesson for all of those oooooooo s and ahhhhhhh s!!! Explains Proper Nouns in an animated video. Explains all other kinds of nouns. 8 United Streaming is a great site for video. streaming.discoveryeducation.com United Streaming is excellent; Dark Marker for language arts, Maths Mansion is good for math and there are numerous health and science videos. Not suitable for social studies, mostly American content. 8 Google Images Google Images offer the best images in a search. Social Studies Div I, II, III, IV Blackgold has some wonderful links and projects that can be used interactively on Smart. Learn Alberta Some of the Alberta Learning interactive links and videos are good.
