3 ABOUT MCK The International Cultural Centre was opened on 29 May 1991 at the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe held in Cracow. It was a special moment: first after the year 1989 meeting of representatives of the West and East, dedicated to culture and cultural heritage. Thank to this conference the new institution, with a clearly specified mission, appeared and has been well known in the international stage from its inception. The leading idea of the Centre is intercultural communication, building common Europe over national, ideological, regional classifications. Projects realised in the framework of the Centre oscillate around issues such as: essence of civilization in Europe; national stereotypes; national identity towards globalisation; collective memory; multiculturalism in Middle Europe; Poland in Europe; cultural heritage and a new philosophy of its protection; phenomenon of historic cities; culture and development; position of culture in society. The International Cultural Centre is a scientific, expert institution, it conducts exhibitory, promotional, educational and publishing activities. It combines successfully contemporary life and tradition which is expressed also by the head office, tenement house "Pod kruki" (under ravens) in the interior of which the newest technology solutions have been applied. Here is the place where broad public can meet scientists, artists and politicians, it is here where young people can make discussions with outstanding intellectuals, it is here where one can commune with early and modern art. 4 Management of premises in Poland included in UNESCO Word Heritage List Project description The Project s aim is to create a platform for exchanging experience in the management of premises in Poland and Norway which have been placed in the UNESCO s list of World Heritage. It will be addressed to both Polish and Norwegian experts in cultural heritage management and to entities and persons directly engaged in management and development of historical monuments (cultural institutions, restoration-research institutions, non-governmental organisations, local administration, etc.) At designated premises of the World Heritage USESCO in Norway (Urnes Stave Church, Bryggen, the Vega Islands) and in the region of Lesser Poland in Poland (Kraków, Wieliczka, Kalwaria Zebrzydowska and Lanckorona, chosen churches from Lesser Poland included in the UNESCO d list of World Heritage). The Project will comprise an expert part, within the scope of which comparative studies concerning the functioning of the monuments protection system and its implementation in both countries will be presented, and a practical part - exchange of information and experience between the entities and institutions managing heritage properties which will be held during the conference and touring seminaries combined with workshops (2 conferences, 2 touring seminaries combined with workshops). The results of experience exchange and discussions will be published at the end of the project and presented in a form of board exhibition. The following issues will be discussed in detail: Sustainable management of premises included in the UNESCO s list and protected areas; cooperation between sites placed on the UNESCO's list and between particular levels of public administration; creation of protection and management programmes and interim statements; tourism in premises included in UNESCO s World Heritage List their promotion among various target groups; engagement of local communities in protection and management of historical resources. 5 PROJECT PARTNERS Riksantikvaren, Directorate for Cultural Heritage Task of the Norwegian partner will be general project management on the Norwegian side consisting in e.g.: permanent contacts with Polish partners, establishing contacts and recruiting Norwegian experts, recruiting Norwegian participants of the conference and seminaries combined with workshops (representatives and managers of the premises in Norway which are included in the UNESCO's World Heritage List); taking part in compiling information about project in the Norwegian language, in particular for the website purpose. The Norwegian partner shall organise a part of the project taking place in Norway, i.e. touring seminary combined with workshops (its content concerning both content and practicalorganisational matters) and organise a meeting of the Steering Committee of the project in Norway. 6 UPCOMING EVENTS October A 9-day touring seminary combined with workshops, held in chosen premises of World Heritage in Lesser Poland (10 participants from Norway, participants receiving the Norwegian delegation in particular premises); - A one-and-half-day conference; about 100 participants, including 10 experts 5 from each country and Polish and Norwegian representatives of premises of cultural heri tage directly taking part in the project - presentation of the experts reports, presenta ion of Norwegian premises included in the World Heritage List to the Polish audience, presentation of entries in the list of World Heritage from the territory of Małopolska to the Norwegian participants.
