Bridging the gaps, inc. Bridging the Gaps (BTG) is an integrative addiction treatment facility that offers proven long-term recovery for adult drug addicts, alcoholics, and dual-diagnosed clients. Our unique holistic approach to addiction treatment bridges the gaps between: o o traditional addiction treatment, which address only the psychological and spiritual aspects of addiction, and alternative therapies, which treat only the physical components of substance abuse. We combine the best of both of these treatment approaches, using state of the science recovery techniques to treat the whole person - the body, the mind, and the spirit. OUR MISSION The mission of Bridging the Gaps is to break the vicious cycle of use, abuse, abstinence, and relapse. We believe the goal of treatment should not be merely that the addict abstain from abusing substances, but also be free of the cravings that lead to relapse. We want our clients to leave BTG with a sense of wellbeing and their first true hope for lifelong sobriety.

THE ROOT CAUSE OF ADDICTION Addicts who go through traditional treatment programs often have to settle for how they re left to feel anxious, depressed, moody, unable to sleep, and still craving the substance(s) they have given up. Because the underlying cause of the addiction is not addressed, the addict is very likely to relapse. Bridging the Gaps gets to the root cause of the disease of addiction - Brain Chemistry Imbalance. While acknowledging the valuable roles that emotional and spiritual development play in an addict s recovery, we also provide our clients with the tools needed to repair and rebalance the brain deficits related to their addiction. As a part of the initial admissions assessment, all BTG clients are referred to our adjunct medical clinic, Winchester Integrative Health and Wellness. In addition to a thorough evaluation of the client s current medical care needs, functional testing is also done on each client to diagnose neurotransmitter imbalances, toxicities, and brain nutrient deficiencies that may be contributing to the client s addictive behavior. The medical staff then determines the appropriate regimen of intravenous and oral nutrient therapies each client will require to repair these imbalances and deficiencies and put him on the path to full recovery.

THERAPY With the wide array of therapies it offers its clients, Bridging the Gaps is one of the most comprehensive addiction treatment facilities in the U.S. THERAPIES FOR THE BODY* o IV Neuro-Nutritional Therapy o Oral Nutrients o Healthy Diet & Nutrition Education o Neurofeedback o Acu-Detox o Physical Fitness & Massage THERAPIES FOR THE MIND* o Psycho-Education Classes o Individual & Group Counseling o Family Counseling o Expressive Therapy/Music Therapy THERAPIES FOR THE SPIRIT* o 12-Step Program o Meditation o Yoga o Reiki * For further information on any of these services, please visit our website at

Neurofeedback * Some people are born with significantly altered brain wave patterns that cause their brains to misfire. These altered brain wave patterns are correlated with an assortment of disorders, including addiction. Moreover, prolonged substance abuse tends to exacerbate this brain wave abnormality. As a result, the addict suffers from mental sluggishness OR agitation, depending upon which substances he has abused. Neurofeedback helps the addict s brain learn to regulate its own firing normalizing brain wave activity. Bridging the Gaps, in its continuing quest to offer its clients the most effective therapies available for recovery from addiction, provides neurofeedback training to its clients. Neurofeedback (or EEG biofeedback, as it is sometimes called) is a cutting-edge treatment modality that utilizes direct training of brain functioning - without the use of medication - through operant conditioning and simple biofeedback. * For further information, visit our website at:

Prior to neurofeedback training, each client is administered an EEG as part of a thorough assessment of brain wave activity. The EEG is analyzed and converted to a brain map, which helps identify the client s abnormal brain wave patterns by comparing his brain map to a brain map database of symptom-free individuals of the same age and gender. After the test is analyzed, an individualized program of neurofeedback training is designed for the client to correct his particular brain wave pattern abnormalities. In a typical neurofeedback session, electrodes attached to the client s scalp measure brain wave activity moment to moment. These measurements are conveyed to the client through video, audio, and tactile feedback. The client s brain uses this feedback to retrain and direct the brain wave activity. Research has found that addicts who receive neurofeedback training, as part of a residential treatment program, show an increased participation in individual and group counseling. Furthermore, such clients tend to stay in treatment longer and have significantly higher abstinence rates than those who do not receive such training.

TREATMENT PROGRAMS At Bridging the Gaps, we believe, and research confirms, that the longer a client is in treatment, the greater the chances for long-term success. Any treatment duration of less than 90 days tends to increase the chances of relapse. Therefore, BTG strongly encourages treatment stays of at least 90 days. However, we realize that three months of treatment is not always possible. Our treatment team will work with each individual client to help him reach the optimum recovery level achievable in the time the client is able to give. Treatment at Bridging the Gaps is divided into three phases: Phase I For addicts/alcoholics new to treatment or to BTG s integrative treatment approach. The primary focus of this phase is abstinence and breaking through the denial of the disease of addiction. It is during this phase of treatment that the client begins to receive the IV and oral nutritional therapies to rebalance brain chemistry. Phase II This phase of treatment is about taking responsibility for one s life and doing things differently. With the help of BTG s off-site experience, *The Retreat, the client is encouraged to delve more deeply into the core psychological issues that contribute to addiction. Phase III This phase is marked by a continuation of treatment within a transitional living environment. The client is expected to provide for daily needs, such as cooking meals and doing shopping - steps that move the client toward regaining autonomy and independence. During this phase of treatment, the client will again take part in *The Retreat, which helps to solidify the gains that have been made in all phases of treatment at BTG.

THE RETREAT * During Phases II and III of treatment at Bridging the Gaps, clients attend a 2-day/1-night off-site retreat to solidify and internalize the concepts and insights they have been exposed to in their group and individual counseling sessions. The intense experiential nature of The Retreat helps clients uncover and acknowledge core issues, such as shame, guilt, self-identity, and childhood trauma that are at the heart of their addictions. This newly found awareness lays the foundation for the more indepth therapeutic work of the later treatment stages. The Retreat makes use of techniques found in both Eastern and Western healing traditions, such as: Low Ropes Course The Low Ropes Course is designed to help our clients explore issues of trust, self-esteem, and cooperation. Because the course is laid out close to the ground, the physical risks are low; however, the activities are still quite challenging and require the group to cooperate to accomplish their goals. * For further information, visit our website at:

Labyrinth The labyrinth is an ancient symbol of wholeness that is found in all religious traditions in various forms around the world. Walking the labyrinth is a right brain activity stimulating intuition, creativity, and imagery. It is used as a meditation tool and is intended to represent the journey to one s own center and back out into the world. Drum Therapy Research confirms that drumming reduces stress and fatigue and lowers blood pressure, which boosts the immune system and accelerates physical healing. The act of drumming also releases endorphins, producing feelings of wellbeing. The physical transmission of the rhythmic energy of drumming permeates the entire brain, generating neural connections even in parts of the brain where there is significant damage or impairment, as is found in ADD or addiction. Sweat Lodge The Sweat Lodge, or Ceremonial Sauna, is a ritual common to most of the native cultures of the world. It is believed to purify the body, the mind, and the spirit while also establishing a feeling of community. The heat of the Sweat Lodge removes toxins from the body, such as viruses and bacteria that are unable to survive at temperatures above 98.6 degrees. It also stimulates the endocrine glands and facilitates the release of negative ions into the air, which induces relaxation and alertness.

COMPLEMENTARY TREATMENT PROGRAMS BTG also offers the following complementary treatment programs to further enhance our clients successful recovery: Continuing Care (also known as Phase IV) A weekly support group for those who have successfully completed treatment. This group focuses on relapse prevention and maintenance of the gains the clients have achieved in their treatment. As a part of this program, participants have the opportunity to receive individual and family counseling, as needed. Family Program We realize that addiction and recovery have a profound impact on the partners, children, parents, and friends of our clients. Moreover, we are aware that their support can be vital to a client s ability to maintain long-term sobriety. The Family Program is a psycho-educational group that provides family members/friends with the understanding of the physiology of the disease of addiction that they will need as their loved one moves toward recovery. In addition, the safety of the group setting offers them the opportunity to share the joys and cope with the challenges they face during this period of transition.

LOCATION Located in the picturesque, historic town of Winchester, Virginia, Bridging the Gaps is removed from the stresses and temptations of big city life. In the calm and serenity of the Shenandoah Valley, our clients can focus on the work of recovery. Yet, BTG is within a 4-hour drive of most of the major metropolitan areas of the mid-atlantic region, which makes it convenient for our clients to reach us. FACILITY SIZE BTG has chosen to remain a small treatment center a maximum of 24 clients at a time. Our small size enables us to give our clients the personal attention and individualized treatment they deserve. From the time our clients arrive at our facility, they will be aware of the commitment our staff has to them AND their recovery.

REFERRALS/ADMISSIONS At BTG, an admissions staff member is available to take your call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whether you are calling about admission for yourself or a loved one, or if you just want to ask a question, please do not hesitate to call us. Your calls are always kept in the strictest confidence, and you will always be treated with compassion and respect. We welcome calls from family members or friends as well as from employers, clergy, or health care professionals. Many of our clients have found long-term recovery because someone who cared took the first step to call. We serve English-speaking clients from all over the world. If you are coming to us from outside our immediate area, our Admissions staff will be more than happy to assist you with your travel plans. We also provide transportation to our facility from any of the three international airports in our area. Toll Free: International & Local:
