2 יק דּ ע& Introduction to Kol Nidre Night 1 As Yom Kippur begins, a powerful transformative experience is accessible. Let us enter a holy state together through the preparatory prayers. To enter into this state with our whole being and to fully realize the purification of at-one-ment, we need to let go of our attachment to our problems, and to the heaviness and burdens and feelings of guilt and powerlessness that weigh down our hearts. Let us begin by removing the bindings that allow us to keep these masks in place. Let us begin to nullify the power that keeps our lives motionless, crystallized, and obstructed from transformation. Viddui - Confession of Forgiveness 2 Master of all Worlds, I hereby forgive whoever has hurt me, And whoever has done me wrong, whether by word or deed, In this incarnation or in a previous incarnation. May no one be punished on my account. May it be your will, our God and God of our ancestors, That I fall short no more, that I not revert to my old ways, That I not cause anger by my actions, And that I not do what is evil in your sight. Wipe away the misdeeds that I have committed with your great compassion, But not through sickness or suffering. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable before you my God, my rock and my redeemer. Or Zaru ah 3 There is a light that transcends all limits and bounds. It can be found in our hearts. We ask now that this light clean and purify us, and renew us in joy, To allow the Tzaddik within to shine forth. Concerning all vows, oaths, covenants, promises and all manner of bindings of soul with which I may bind and limit myself, constrain and confine myself, from this Yom Kippur until next Yom Kippur (may it come upon us all for a blessing), I proclaim: I hereby recant, release, disavow and declare null and void from this time forward. The bindings shall not bind me; the roles I take on shall not constrain me; and the limitations shall not in any way limit my power. 6. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting-- over and over announcing your place in the family of things. יי? והוּא? The Compassionate One will cleanse us of all errors and will not destroy us. The One is our source of salvation, the guiding power answers heartfelt requests. 11. According to Rabbi Laura Duhan Kaplan, this piyyut (spiritual poem) was written in the Middle East between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries of the common era. It was set to a melody believed to have originated in the community of Iraqi Jews in Jerusalem. A recording of that melody is at B-6
