1 In our humble opinion cocktails are much more than just drinks, they represent over 200 years of history in a glass serving as a time-honored testament to bygone eras such as the days of prohibition and repeal between 1920 and But what exactly is a cocktail, think about it? Almost everyone knows the word but what exactly is it? Well, the first ever definition of the world was seen in a political trade journal published on May 13th, 1806 entitled The Balance and Columbian Repository, stating: Cocktail, then is a stimulating Liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters Old Fashioned 14 The Old fashioned dates back to the mid 19 th century. The first use of the name and recipe was in private members club in Louisville, Kentucky. Colonel James pepper brought the drink to the bar of Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York from where its fame was secure (The Waldorf Astoria Bar book 1935) Jim Beam, Orange extract, Hoppe, Angostura, Demerara, Gomme PRE-PROHIBITION COCKTAIL S White Lady 16 Iconic American bartender Harry Craddoch created this drink in 1930 at the American Bar. During the prohibition time it was common place for US barman to travel overseas to practice there trade, with Craddoch being perhaps the most noted. Our recipe honors him by keeping to his original measures. As per its original recipe: 2/3 Gin (we are using Bombay Sapphire), 1/3 Orange Juice and dashes of both French & Italian Vermouth Named in honor of a New Year. Some believe this was the last cocktail invented in the Old Waldorf Bar. 1/3 Gordon s dry gin, 1/3 Blue Curaçao, 1/3 Cream Negroni 14 Count Camillo Negroni supposedly invented it in 1919 by asking the bartender to strengthen his favorite cocktail; the Americano. Grand Marnier, Demerara, Hoppe, Champagne, Orange Zest Mint Julep 18 Rooted in the southern states of America, the Julep was a drink that amongst other things marked the status of the plantation owners during the slave trade years, traditionally being served at social gatherings in the hot summer months.
