2 Foreign csumer spending increases 10.99% across six Mediterranean countries Foreign csumer spending Visa debit, credit and prepaid cards across the six Mediterranean Rim countries for the period January to April totalled 8.39bn, a year-year increase of 10.99% in foreign csumer spending compared to 7.56bn during the same period in *. Of the six countries, France received 2.81bn of foreign csumer spend during the January to April period, almost ten times the amount spent in Greece over the same period ( 241m). Portugal benefitted from the largest year--year increase in foreign csumer spending, rising from 410m in January - April to 475m over the same period in (15.74% increase). Russia ctinued to post strg spending growth with a 33% year--year increase. By ctrast spending by Japanese visitors fell 28%. The United Kingdom ctinues to top the table of the top ten spenders across all six countries, with UK visitors spending 1.3bn for the period January to April, although year--year spending was down by 0.2% the same period in. Cards make it easier and cheaper for tourists to withdraw foreign currency whilst abroad. Whilst due to the nature of cash we are not able to see directly where it is spent, the amount of cash withdrawn is indicative of spending whilst abroad. Foreign visitors helped drive retail demand in the six Mediterranean Rim countries, totalling a 16.54% increase in year--year retail spending, rising from 2.23bn in January to April to 2.60bn in January to April. Hotels recorded some of the lowest growth levels of all the categories but the value of spending still made it the third largest category. Spending hotels grew 8.60% year--year and grew from 1.13bn in January to April to 1.23bn in the first four mths of this year. *This growth is in part due to an increasing number of Visa cards in circulati algside a trend for cardholders to use cards versus cash. Greece was the ly country to fall out of the top twenty foreign spenders list. Visitors from emerging ecomies Visitor spending from the BRIC countries Brazil, Russia, India and China held firm over the course of the January to April period year--year. Foreign spending by Russian visitors accounted for 6.25% of overall foreign spend across the six countries, appearing six times in the top 20 spenders. Spending by Indian visitors remains extremely low across the six, never appearing in the top 20 spenders and accounting for less than 1% of overall foreign csumer spending. 4 Foreign csumer spending in six individual Mediterranean Rim countries France Total foreign csumer spending in France over the period January to April was 2.82, compared to 2.42bn the year before a of a 16.4%. The United Kingdom ctinued to account for the largest amount of foreign csumer spending in France, with a total spend of 485m from January to April, a 2.19% increase the year before. Visitors from the USA spent the secd most 239m although this was less than half the total spends of Brits over the same period. There was a large increase in spending by visitors to France from Luxembourg with year--year total increases of %. Meanwhile, spending amg Belgian and Italian visitors grew more sluggishly. The areas to post the biggest increase in foreign spending in France were insurance (up 746.4% from a low base last year), airlines (up 43.46%), and travel (up 22.84%). The ly area to show a decline in foreign csumer spending was car hire, which saw a 3.15% fall. Foreign csumers withdrew over 600m worth of cash in France between January and April Foreign csumer spending in Greece saw a drop during the first four mths of of 1.54%, compared to. Total foreign expenditure in the country dropped from 245m to 241m against the same time last year. There were significant falls in spending amg csumers from the USA, France, Norway, Italy and Russia. Csumers from Cyprus again topped the spending chart, although their spending also fell 0.25% to 69.9m. However, there is some room for optimism in the figures due to increases in spending by visitors from other countries. Spending from csumers in Germany and Sweden jumped markedly with both countries total figures up 22% over the period. Foreign visitors injected 147m into the Greek ecomy in the first four mths of. Foreign visitors steered clear of spending in a number of areas including retail, airlines, car hire, motoring and travel. However, spending health and utilities all saw big increases, up 39.49% and 32.27% respectively during the period. Foreign visitors spent a total of 1.97bn over this period, with French spending making up 261m of that figure. Visitors from Russia came secd in spending in Italy with 223m, while Americans made up 202m of the total. China s growing affluent populati began to make a significant impact overall spending for the first time, due to an increase of nearly a third the same period last year. There were also significant increases in spend from Russian and Japanese visitors 30.28% and 34.47% respectively. Visitors from France and the UK all tightened their purse strings marginally in Italy, while spending from Spanish csumers fell more significantly by 10.95%. 6 China 27,732,530 36,949, Overall retail spending by foreign visitors to Italy was up 17.53% the same period last year, totalling 705m. Italian supermarkets and retailers all experience healthy boosts to the spending of foreign tourists in the year to April. Meanwhile, spending by foreign visitors utilities nearly doubled to 537m. On the other hand, foreign visitors cut back car hire, mirroring a trend across a number of Mediterranean markets. Spending by visitors from Portugal s former colies of Angola and Mozambique both rocketed during early, increasing 53.23% and 78.21% respectively. French visitors ctinued to top the table overall with a total spend of nearly 100m during the same period. Despite its small populati, affluent visitors from Luxembourg splashed out a total of 9.3m between January and April. There was healthy growth in foreign visitor spending in most areas across Portugal, with a particularly positive increase in expenditure utilities and insurance products. The ly areas where csumers cut back significantly were airlines (down 10.63% the same time last year), and food and drink (down 2.15%). 6

Visitors from the United Kingdom retained the top spot as the biggest foreign spenders in Spain, spending 504m during the January to April period, a year--year decrease of 2.49% from 517m. Visitors from Russia spent nearly 50% more in the January to April period than a year earlier, rising from 55m to 82m. Whilst due to the nature of cash we are not able to see directly where it is spent, the amount of cash withdrawn is indicative of spending whilst abroad. Retail, hotels and entertainment saw 8.46%, 5.97% and 8.36% increases respectively in foreign csumer spending, totalling 1,108bn. Spend in these three categories accounted for 46% of csumer spending across all 15 categories in the period January to April in Spain. Visitors from Saudi Arabia saw a significant year--year increase in csumer spending in Turkey, increasing by 69%, rising from 7.79m in (January to April) to 13m in. Russian visitors also saw a substantial jump in csumer spending in Turkey over the same periods from 35m () to 48m (), an increase of 37%. These data are then amalgamated to determine a cumulative figure for the four mth period (across the six countries and individually). These are then compared to the previous year s spending in order to deliver a year year indicator in the change csumer spending. These data are not adjusted and just use raw transacti data ly. Spending Categories The Mitor covers spending in the following categories: Cash cash withdrawn a Visa card from an ATM Hotels Retail clothing, catalogue shopping, department stores, and DIY household sales Entertainment Supermarket Travel Petrol Car Hire Airlines Health Motoring Food & Drink Insurance Utilities Miscellaneous including professial services, taxes etc Background to the Mitor The Mediterranean Rim Tourism Mitor provides a measure of foreign csumer spending in six Mediterranean countries France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey based the cross-border transactis that are processed by Visa Europe. The Mitor quantifies foreign csumer spending, as indicated by Visa Europe data, for three periods throughout the year January to April, May to August, and September to December. It offers year year insight into foreign csumer spending, both at a macro and spending category level across the six countries. The Mitor provides details of total foreign csumer spending across the six markets, whilst also looking at each market individually in more detail. Visa Europe In Europe, there are 445 milli Visa debit, credit and commercial cards. In the 12 mths ending September those cards were used to make purchases and cash withdrawals to the value of 1.7 trilli. 14% of csumer spending at point of sale in Europe is with a Visa card, and almost 80% of that is Visa debit cards. Visa Europe is owned and operated by more than 3,700 European members and was incorporated in July Visa Europe is independent of global Visa Inc., with an exclusive, irrevocable and perpetual licence in Europe, while both companies operate to ensure global interoperability.
