There s something about Belgium. Maybe it s the modest and welcoming people who, with three official languages, still find it easy to converse in English. Maybe it s the stunning architecture of the medieval cobblestone squares or of the modern public buildings. Or perhaps it s the incredible cuisine found in the vast array of restaurants where each meal seems better than the last. Well situated between France and Holland, Belgium encompasses all the best that Europe has to offer in an area no bigger than km2. Romantic sceneries, waffles and chocolate, music festivals, castles, churches and musea.. all can be discovered by using the dense train network. Often called the Essence of Europe, Belgium is both multicultural and multilingual. Flanders in the north, proud of its medieval art cities, Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent. To the south in Wallonia, you will find the rolling hills of the Ardennes, countless castles, and the cities of Liege, Namur, and Tournai. The city of Brussels is one of the world s great cosmopolitan capitals, home to both the European Union and NATO, as well as to a wealth of international trade and finance companies. Belgium s history has always been linked to both commercial and cultural exchange, and much of its character is due to its role as the great meeting place of Western Europe. Traces of the Austrians, Spanish, French and Dutch can still be seen in its architecture and in the lifestyle of its people
After years of lying in the shadow of Antwerp and Bruges, Ghent, with its quaint cobbled streets and winding canals, is finally starting to get the recognition that it deserves. Its 900-plus listed buildings are testament to the fact that not only did it survive the World Wars pretty much intact, but also that it was a very wealthy city in medieval times. Ghent combines the medieval grandeur and modern consciousness in a natural and above all, modest way. Ghent should rank as the most surprising city in Flanders, combining beauty and culture with creativity, cutting edge design and a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene. - John Brunton, The Observer, 18 January

welcome to The Module of Communication Management is a programme for communication or marketing students in their third bachelor year. In the first semester we offer topics for 47, in the second for 55 ECTS, allowing the students to compose a suitable and relevant programme for one or two semesters. All teachers are experienced and enthousiastic (former) professionals, keen on teaching in an open-minded, dialogue-oriented atmosphere. A wide variety of methods are used: ex cathedra, workshops, business game, individual and group assignments, visits and coached assignments. A number of guest lecturers from partner universities all over Europe come to strengthen the programme

Communication skills This course is a cluster, composed of 3 topics: Group dynamics, Non-verbal communication and Meeting and presentation techniques. Students learn to communicate within a multicultural group and to work together. They learn that non-verbal communication is a complex process involving people, words, tone of voice and body movements. This way they become aware of their own body language and that of others. Acquiring meeting and presentation techniques, students learn to structure a meeting, to participate actively in a meeting and to make an efficient presentation. Public Relations and Corporate Communications This course is offered as a four- parts module: Intercultural Management, Public relations Strategies and Techniques, Public Relations Case studies and Topics of PR. Intercultural Management introduces the issues of Culture, civilization, national culture, company culture which finally leads to a better insight of how to live and work together. The PR-strategy course aims to provide a general view on the PR-discipline, enabling the student to identify concrete communication problems. He learns to use appropriate systems and tools to develop basic research on communication and marketing problems. The PR-case studies help the students to develop a communication strategy and plan, starting from real life cases. A number of guest lecturers from European universities and companies present their specialty PR-topics on campus. Academic knowledge combined with professional experience Marketing Four topics make this module: Marketing Communication, Intercultural Management, Intercultural Marketing Communication and Topics of marketing. The Marketing Communication course gives insight into the relationship, the combination of and the communicative power of several marketing communication instruments. For that reason, it starts with the situation of marketing(communication) in the overall company strategy. Intercultural Management is a mutual course for both Marketing and Public Relation modules. The aim of Intercultural Marketing Communication is to give insight into the differences in marketing approaches, due to cultural differences. It is offered as an e-learning module. The Topics of Marketing are offered by guest lecturers from partner universities.
Communicative English This course focuses on improving (business) communicative skills in interactive workshops, role plays and intensive exercises in class. E-business This course learns the students about the impact of the internet on doing business and business management. The course focuses on the basic terminology of e-business and e-marketing and on the development of an e-business strategy. Visual Literacy and Digital Storytelling Visual language is the look and feel of design, created by such elements as colour, proportion, letter form, shape, texture etc.. Visual literacy will help to understand visual language. Digital storytelling is the modern expression of the ancient art of storytelling. It uses digital media to create media-rich stories to tell, to share and to preserve. Students get to know the parameters of form of the visual imagery and will be able to assess the use of illustrative, photographical and digital techniques and styles in view of the communication objectives. Europe in the Media This cluster is composed of three courses: European institutions and lobbying (about the main lobbying and networking functions and institutions of the EU), Trends in media (about how commercial logics have changed the media and about the future of social media) and A geopolitical approach of Europe: geopolitics, European Union, National Identity, Eurosphere, Treaty of Lisbon, the place of the EU in the world by 2025, the eastern partnership of the EU and the Union of the Mediterranean Projects This course offers a theoretical outline of why and how to organize and manage a project or event with specific attention to the integration of the project/event in the overall company strategy. The students learn to use the programme MS project. A business game concludes this course.
Social and Cultural Affairs Let s call this course: Belgium: the rough guide! To become familiar with the Belgian and Brussels model, to be able to make judgments about it, regarding the European context in which it is embodied. A guided visit to Brussels is one of the planned activities. European Media Scene This course is about the similarities and diversity of the European media scene. It offers an analysis of the political, technological and juridical context of the media morphology, which helps to understand the media globalization debate. One of the seminars is offered by IP. Introduction to graphical design and print buying This introduction on the basics and the preparation of graphical and digital design will help to develop a critical approach to what might be considered good or bad design. This is a very practical and visualized course. The Print buying course is about prepress and print production and buying helping to understand the graphical printing production process. After having followed this course, students are able to monitor print projects, follow-up price tenders, control the quality of prepress and print. Multimedia In this course students get acquainted with the Web 2.0 possibilities, just as Web 3.0 is on its way In the second part of the course students learn to produce, process and manipulate all kinds of images. Final part is a workshop to acquire the necessary skills of typography and lay out to produce communicative presentations. 8 19
Creative writing Primary aim is to discover whether you like writing or not. Secondary aim is to know some tools that can help you to draw up your own creative texts. The course makes you aware that writing is something anybody can to a certain extent, if only given a push in the right direction and keeping in mind the fact that it is hard work. Basic Dutch This evening course is offered by an external language institute. Basic French You acquire essential speaking and understanding skills as to present yourself, to ask someone to show the way and other survival techniques European Economics and Trade Politics You gain a better understanding of the European surrounding factor of companies and the interaction between the EU and the economic actors, this way adopting a critical attitude about the European integration process. Advertising case You develop your own advertising strategy for a given brand, after an analysis of the market. The work is done is small groups, coached by a professional. Event and project management After a theoretical step-by-step outline of how to plan, budget and organize an event, your team organizes a real event, coached by the lecturer. Business ethics With this introduction in corporate ethics we will examine some ethical principles and moral problems that arise in a business environment, but also in one s personal life. The module Busieness ethics consists of a 10 days Vipassana meditation course in Dhamma Pajjota (Dilsen, Belgium), where students will also be able to attend a few particular speeches for business executives. The historical and global importance of religious, spiritual and philosophical views on business ethics was underestimated for a long time.
