4 2 International English Centre Welcome Welcome to Aberystwyth The International English Centre (IEC) looks forward to welcoming you to Aberystwyth University in Our friendly and highly professional centre is an integral part of the University and offers a wide range of courses. Whether you want to prepare for a degree in the UK, improve your general English skills or just take a study holiday, we have courses to suit. We also offer teacher training and development courses, provide in-sessional support for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and run an IELTS testing centre. At the IEC, we pride ourselves on our high quality courses, personalised teaching and strong pastoral care. We keep classes small to ensure that every student receives individual attention, and we have a personal tutor system in place so we can focus on your individual learning needs. We recognise that studying in a new country can be challenging as well as exciting, and our friendly staff are always on hand to help you. 5 Aberystwyth University 3 Scholarships Students who successfully complete the International Foundation Certificate will receive a scholarship of 2,000 per year for each year of their 3 year degree programme at Aberystwyth University. Students who successfully complete the Pre-Masters Programme and progress to a postgraduate degree at Aberystwyth University will receive a scholarship of 1,500. See for details.

7 International Foundation Certificate (& Fast Track Foundation) Aberystwyth University 5 The International Foundation Certificate develops the academic and language skills needed for undergraduate success. It also provides a solid introduction to your degree subject, and gives you the opportunity to get to know your future department. There are two routes to the Foundation Certificate: A 30-week course with start dates in September and January, and a 15-week Fast Track option beginning in January. Students who successfully complete the International Foundation Certificate are guaranteed progression to a degree at Aberystwyth University. 8 6 International English Centre Who is the International Foundation Certificate for? 1. Students who have completed high school in their own country but do not have the qualifications to begin a British degree. If your country has a 12 year education system, you probably need a Foundation Certificate Course. 2. Students who need to improve their English before starting a degree. 3. Students who already have the qualifications to begin a degree, but want to gain more confidence in their language skills and subject knowledge. How is the course structured? The academic year is divided into three blocks. Students on the 30-week Foundation Certificate take either Blocks 1 & 2 or Blocks 2 & 3. Students on the Fast Track Foundation Certificate take Block 2 only. What will I study? The course is designed to enhance your language skills, your academic skills and your knowledge of your degree subject. The course is taught in close collaboration with academic departments, ensuring you receive a thorough preparation for your degree. The course involves 20 classroom hours a week, plus independent study, regular one-to-one tutorials and plenty of individual attention. Other departments at Aberystwyth University, including Psychology, Law & Criminology, and History & Welsh History also accept students who have successfully completed the Foundation Certificate. The International Foundation Certificate is accepted by many other UK universities.

It provides a bridge between undergraduate studies in your own country and a UK postgraduate degree in a Businessrelated subject. The Business and Management component of the course is taught in collaboration with Aberystwyth University s School of Management and Business. This ensures that you receive a thorough preparation for your postgraduate degree, and become familiar with the academic culture of the UK and the expectations of your future department. The course runs for 30 weeks, and you can join in either September or January. There is also a 15-week Fast Track option. Scholarships of 1,500 available. Pre-Masters Scholarships Students who complete the course at the level required for entry onto their MA / MSc at Aberystwyth University will receive a scholarship in the form of a 1,500 reduction on their Masters fees. 15 Aberystwyth University 13 Our Pre-sessional and Pre-sessional Plus Courses are intensive courses designed to meet the needs of students who have been offered a place on a degree at Aberystwyth University. These courses provide a thorough introduction to the academic and language skills needed for success on your degree, as well as an introduction to British academic culture and to Aberystwyth University. In the summer, the intensive classroom-based study is complemented by a lively 12- week social programme (see page 20). This means that by the time your degree starts, you are not only ready to meet the academic challenges of university study, but you have also had an opportunity to make friends and explore the local area. The courses run for 42, 30, 19, 12, 6 and 3 weeks. 16 14 International English Centre Who are the Pre-sessional and Pre-sessional Plus Courses for? These courses are for students who have a conditional offer to study at Aberystwyth University, but need to improve their language level in order to meet the conditions of their offer. The 3-week Induction Course (IC3) is only available to students who have an unconditional offer to study at Aberystwyth University. How are the courses structured? All courses involve 20 hours of classroom-based study and tutorials a week. The 12-week and 6-week Pre-sessional Courses do not include holiday periods. The 19-week and 30-week Pre-sessional Plus Courses consist of the 12-week Pre-sessional, and either one or two terms of the Target English Course (see page 17). They include some holiday periods (see page 33 for term dates). What will I study? The courses focus on developing your academic skills and improving your command of academic English. The classroom sessions involve intensive practice of the four language skills (writing, reading, listening and speaking) through a variety of academic tasks. You will have the opportunity to experience live lectures and to gain confidence in taking effective notes. You will learn to participate actively in seminars, deliver presentations and present ideas and information to an audience in a professional manner. You will develop strategies for searching for information, reading effectively and efficiently, and recording information. There is a strong emphasis on academic writing. By the end of the course you will have learned to research and write academic essays and reports, making skilful use of sources to support your ideas, and using an appropriate academic style.

19 Target English Aberystwyth University 17 The Target English Course offers you the chance to improve your English language skills in a university environment. The course runs during the academic year, between September and May. You can join for between 4 and 30 weeks. Some students join Target English simply to boost their English, while others use it as a stepping stone onto another course. Whatever your motivation, Target English offers an intensive and stimulating language learning experience. The course covers language development, communicative and academic skills and includes 20 classroom hours a week. As well as improving your everyday English, you will have opportunities to develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through a variety of academic tasks. The course also explores aspects of British and Welsh culture, and encourages students to extend their learning well beyond the classroom. What level is Target English? This course is open to students with an English level of CEFR B1 (IELTS 4.0) and above. i Did you know? 20 18 International English Centre Summer School: English and Communicative Skills Course The popular English and Communicative Skills Course gives you the opportunity to develop your language and communication skills in a friendly, cosmopolitan environment. You can study for between 2 and 10 weeks, and the course is complemented by a varied and lively social programme. The emphasis on this course is very much on communication and fun classes are lively, creative and interactive. There will be no classes on this day. Who is the English and Communicative Skills course for? The course is for students who wish to improve their communicative ability in English. The course is suitable for students between elementary and upper-intermediate levels. 21 Aberystwyth University 19 What will I study? The main aim of the course is to help you become a more confident communicator in English. The classes build on your existing language skills and focus on: Developing speaking and listening skills Building vocabulary Improving pronunciation and intonation Increasing grammatical accuracy Enhancing fluency and confidence Improving reading and writing skills Enabling independent learning How is the course structured? The course involves: 15 hours of English classes in the mornings 5 hours per week of special interest classes in the afternoons A full social programme (see page 20) In addition, you can choose from a range of special interest classes. 22 20 International English Centre Summer Social Programme The International English Centre provides a full and lively programme of activities and events every summer. This offers opportunities to explore the area, enjoy trips to places of interest, make friends and further develop your English skills in a friendly and informal atmosphere. We provide two trips every week, and a range of evening events. The trips give you a chance to get to know Aberystwyth and its beautiful surroundings, enjoy the stunning coastline and the nearby mountains, and venture further afield to vibrant Welsh and English cities. The Social Programme activities vary from year to year, but these pages show some of our typical trips. It s a beautiful place, the classes were interesting, the staff were really welcoming and the summer social programme was amazing. From cinema trips, sports, and team quizzes to international food evenings and beach barbecues, we offer a varied programme of activities to keep you entertained. Because summers at the International English Centre are so very international, you ll be meeting people from all over the world and practising your English too. Most Summer Social Programme activities are included in your course fee. On occasion, you may need to pay for theatre or cinema tickets, or entrance fees to attractions. These additional costs will not exceed a total of 50 over the 12 weeks of the Social Programme.

24 22 International English Centre Teacher Development Course Our Teacher Development Course is a practical 2-week programme for English language teachers, and offers you a chance to reinvigorate your teaching, improve your language skills and bring new inspiration back to your own classroom. The course combines classroom-based learning, observations and micro-teaching practice with a stimulating series of guided cultural explorations and a full social programme (see page 20). Course Dates Fee Teacher Development Course Who is the course for? 27 July August The course is open to English language teachers from around the world, whatever their teaching context. Participants need a language level of CEFR B2 / IELTS 5.5 or above in order to fully benefit from the course. How is the course structured? A typical day consists of intensive classroom-based learning in the mornings, and a programme of guided cultural explorations in the afternoons. The afternoon sessions offer the opportunity to work with your trainer outside the classroom, and explore aspects of local culture. A lively evening and weekend programme of social activities is also included. You will work with your trainers for at least 20 hours per week. Entry Requirements Teacher Development Course Age Level The course is open to English language teachers from around the world. Participants must have a language level of CEFR B2 / IELTS 5.5 or above. What will I study? The course focuses on both methodology and language. You will learn practical techniques to enhance your own teaching, explore different methodologies, and have the opportunity to observe other teachers in action. You will also extend your own English language skills throughout the course, both in the classroombased language development sessions and during the guided cultural exploration sessions. Vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and intonation will all be worked on, with the aim of making you a more confident and accurate communicator and teacher. In the afternoons, the learning moves outside the classroom. With your trainer and colleagues, you will explore aspects of Welsh and British culture with guided visits which could include local schools, the National Library of Wales, museums or other places of interest. Our teacher trainers value the experience and knowledge that participants bring to a course, and recognise that each group has different needs and interests. Our trainers will work with you to ensure that your professional needs are met, and take a flexible and collaborative approach to course design. i Did you know? 25 Aberystwyth University 23 Trinity Cert TESOL The Trinity CertTESOL (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a professional training course for people who want to teach English as a foreign or second language. The course is validated by Trinity College London, and leads to a globally recognised teaching qualification. Course Dates Fee CertTESOL Course 1 22 June July ,500 CertTESOL Course 2 27 July August ,500 Who is Trinity CertTESOL for? The course is for people who want an internationally recognised language teaching qualification. It is open to those with little or no previous experience of teaching English. Entry Requirements Trinity Cert TESOL Applicants must: What will I study? The course is intended to equip participants with the basic skills and knowledge required to take up a first post in TESOL or TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). It gives an introduction to the theory and practice of English teaching, and an insight into the role of the teacher and the challenges facing language learners. Classroom sessions focus on Teaching Skills & Techniques, Approaches & Methods and Language Awareness. In addition, participants observe classes and gain hands-on teaching practice. How is the course structured? The course involves a minimum of 130 timetabled hours. These will include at least 100 hours of classroom input, 6 hours of observed and assessed teaching practice and 8 hours of guided classroom observations. Age Level Qualifications Be aged 18 or over Have an appropriate level of English language competence (CEFR C1 / IELTS 7.5 or above for nonnative speakers) Hold educational qualifications suitable for entry into higher education What level is the course? The course is Level 5 on the Qualifications & Credit Framework (QCF). This level is considered comparable in difficulty to the second year of an undergraduate degree.

26 24 International English Centre Bespoke Professional Development Courses for Teachers The International English Centre (IEC) at Aberystwyth University has over 30 years experience of delivering high quality professional development and training courses to teachers and lecturers from around the world. We can provide stimulating and practical professional development courses of between 1 and 4 weeks duration. These courses are for teachers or lecturers who want to upgrade their professional skills, become more effective in their teaching, update their knowledge of current theory and practice, and enhance their English language skills. The courses combine intensive classroom-based learning with teaching practice and observations of lectures and seminars, as well as a lively social programme. The courses take place on the University campus, allowing participants to gain insight into the British university context and access to University facilities. In addition, sharing the lively IEC Summer Social Programme with students from across the world allows participants to relax, explore the stunning surroundings and activate their English in a very international context. The vast National Library of Wales, next door to the campus, is also open to students. Computing and ICT Facilities There are plenty of computer workstations you can use, across the campus and in the town, many with 24 hour access. 29 Aberystwyth University 27 Aberystwyth Arts Centre Our award winning Aberystwyth Arts Centre, located on campus, is one of the most important arts centres in Wales and somewhere you are sure to enjoy. It houses a concert hall, theatre, cinema, live music venue, and several exhibition spaces. The bookshop and craft shop are popular with students, and the bar and café serve great food. There is a busy programme of performances, exhibitions, courses and workshops each year, covering the full range of art forms. Whether you want to participate and perform or watch and listen, there s something on offer for everyone. It s a lively and exciting place to be and a great place to relax with friends. The Sports Centre The University s on-campus Sports Centre offers facilities for indoor and outdoor sport and exercise, whatever your interest. Facilities include an indoor swimming pool and saunarium, state of the art fitness suite and techno-gym, dance studio, climbing wall, sports pitches for football and hockey, badminton, basketball and squash courts, cricket nets, running track, equestrian centre and boathouse. A wide variety of excersise and sports classes are also available. The University Music Centre The University Music Centre coordinates an exciting range of ensembles in which you can participate. They include: Philomusica of Aberystwyth the University s symphony orchestra Showtime Singers University Wind Band Aberystwyth Silver Band Choral Union Elizabethan Madrigal Singers The Students Union The Students Union provides a relaxed social venue, run by and for students. The Union also offers a wide range of student services, and runs over 100 clubs and societies covering everything from sports and politics to arts and religion. The Union is also the venue for an excellent range of entertainment including bands, DJs and comedy.

30 28 International English Centre Support for International Students Support for International Students The International English Centre (IEC) and Aberystwyth University offer a wide range of support for students. Language and Study Support The IEC supports students throughout their time at Aberystwyth University. We offer a range of undergraduate modules to help with academic writing and study practices, as well as an undergraduate and a postgraduate seminar series focussing on writing and study skills. We provide free 1x1 language consultations with expert language tutors. Students can also meet 1x1 with the Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellows for advice on specific aspects of writing. The International English Centre is also a registered IELTS testing centre and runs monthly tests. Personal Tutors Students on Foundation, Pre-Masters and Pre-sessional Courses meet regularly with a personal tutor. Personal tutors are there to support both your learning and your adjustment to a new living situation and a new culture. Your tutor will work with you to monitor your academic progress, consider your learning needs and help you plan your independent study. If you experience any difficulties or problems, your personal tutor is on hand to listen and direct you towards further help if necessary. Support for the Under-18s Students who are under the age of 18 when they begin a course with the IEC will receive additional support in the form of regular meetings with a pastoral tutor, as well as with their personal tutor. The role of the pastoral tutor is to ensure your wellbeing and support you in your new environment. Residential Support If you are staying in University Accommodation, you can access a support network of Resident Tutors. Their role is to help you settle in and make the most of your opportunities beyond the classroom. The Student Welcome Centre The Student Welcome Centre is Aberystwyth University s one stop shop for advice and information on support services. They can direct you to advice and support on finance and money management, health and well-being, childcare, disability support, support for specific learning differences and a range of other sevices. Visa and Immigration Support If you need help applying for or renewing a Tier 4 visa, the International Student Advisor can help you with this. 32 30 International English Centre Accommodation Full-time International Students on our courses are guaranteed accommodation in University Residences. Each residence is a vibrant community, with its own distinctive character, offering you a safe and secure environment in which to relax, study and socialise. Residences vary in size and style with many being on campus. Others are conveniently situated close to the town centre. Availability & Costs Rooms are available from 3pm on the Saturday before your course starts, and must usually be vacated by 10am on the Saturday after your course finishes. The cost of accommodation varies according to type and availability, and typically ranges from per week. Academic year, Pre-sessional and Induction course students must pay a 100 accommodation deposit on the first day of the course. This will be refunded on departure from University Residence, provided that you have not caused any damage. Students must also complete their Accommodation Licence Pack on the first day of the course. This is a contractual document which outlines fees and student s rights and responsibilities when living in University Residence. Most international students choose to live in a single room in self-catered accommodation. This accommodation is in flats or individual houses for between 5 and 10 people, who share bathroom facilities and kitchen/diners. The fully fitted kitchen/diners allow you to cook you own meals. You can also use the University s restaurants and cafes. Some en-suite accommodation is available, but places are limited and there is no guarantee you will be allocated an en-suite room. Cheaper budget rooms may also be available. Catered accommodation, which includes a meal allowance as part of the accommodation fee, is available during the academic year.

34 32 International English Centre How to Apply To apply for a course at the International English Centre you should complete the application form available on our website applications/ your completed application form and documents to us at tesol@aber.ac.uk We will assess your application to ensure that you take the right course for your level of English, and that you meet our entry requirements. If your application is successful we will send you an offer letter and invoice. Deposits If you require a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) then you will need to pay a deposit of 1,000. Without this deposit we will not be able to issue a CAS. If you do not need a CAS the deposit you will be required to pay depends on the duration of your course. Refunds Deposits will only be refunded if your visa application is refused. You must send us evidence of this within two weeks of the date of your visa refusal. Refunds will only be made to the person who paid the fees. Refunds are made at the discretion of the University, whose decision is final. A 50 administration fee will be charged. If you withdraw from or cancel your course less than 28 days before the course starts, no refund will be given.
