2 ORNITHOLIDAYS TOUR TO THE NETHERLANDS Winter Birding Break 27 NOVEMBER 01 DECEMBER 2014 A Personal Diary 27 November 2014 The pick-up from Schiphol Airport was smooth and soon we were on our way to Oostvaardersplassen in Flevoland, where White-tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) have nested and several other interesting birds can be found. We started at Pampushaven, where a Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris) and a Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) had recently been seen in a huge group of Tufted Ducks (Aythya fuligula), but we did not have luck for these rarities. However, we did find huge and impressive numbers of Tufted Ducks and found several other species of ducks among them, including Gadwall (Anas strepera), Northern Pintail (Anas acuta), Goosander (Mergus merganser), Smew (Mergellus albellus) and, of course, Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos). As we drove on, we saw a number of Great Egrets (Ardea alba) standing in a nearby pond. We continued for a short walk to the Jan van den Boschpad, but the light was already fading. We saw and heard some Common Chaffinches (Fringilla coelebs) Common Blackbirds (Turdus merula), Redwings (Turdus iliacus) and Song Thrushes (Turdus philomelos) flying over and Winter Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) and European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) were still singing. On the plains at the view point we saw large groups of Barnacle Geese (Branta leucopsis), some Greater White-fronted Geese (Anser albifrons) and a Canada Goose (Branta canadensis), the latter being an escape. At the water was a large group of Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope) with one adult male Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata) amongst them and on the water there were many Common Shelducks (Tadorna tadorna) and some Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca). A Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) screamed from the reeds. As the evening fell rapidly, we returned to the bus and drove to the hotel in Hierden. We had a nice dinner and made a list of the species we had found during the day, a total of November 2014 As Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) was high on everyone s wishlist, the woods of the Veluwe were a good starting point. We drove to Hoog Buurlo, where chances for this species are good. We started off with a walk through the woods and soon found House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) and CommonWood Pigeon (Columba palumbus). Then we found ourselves in the middle of a feeding flock of tits, with Great Tit (Parus major), Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), Willow Tit (Poecile montanus) and even European Nuthatch (Sitta europaea). Also groups of Common Chaffinches flew around. A lucky fly-by of a Mistle Thrush (Turdus viscivorus) followed by a group of Fieldfares (Turdus pilaris) got our hopes up for a good morning of birding and soon after we heard the loud calling of a Black Woodpecker! First, loud and clear, a few times the krrück krrück krrück -sound and a little later also the shrill kliiieh -call. We tried to locate the bird, but failed, and when it called again, it was already much further away. We continued our search and found Long-tailed Tit (Aegithalos caudatus), Goldcrest (Regulus regulus), Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), a Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) chasing a Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola), Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus), Common Crossbill (Loxia Great Spotted Woodpecker Klaas de Jong curvirostra) The Black Woodpecker kept silent so we decided to try our luck on Landgoed Staverden, where recently five species of woodpecker had been located. This is also where we had lunch in a light drizzle, but unfortunately today the estate was also the setting for of a winter fair, a wedding and a high tea at the same time, so the Ornitholidays Tour to The Netherlands 27 November 01 December 2014 Page 1

3 woods around the estate were possibly a little fuller with people and therefore emptier of birds. Surprisingly, we had a mushroom-expert in our group and we learned a lot about mushrooms. We observed a number of species, almost exceeding the number of birds. The new birds that we found were Eurasian Siskin (Spinus spinus) and Brambling (Fringilla montifringilla). A few of the mushrooms were Clouded Funnel (Clitocybe nebularis), Blackening Brittlegill (Russula nigricans), Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare), Glistening Inkcap (Coprinellus micaceus), Common Earthball (Scleroderma citrinum) and False Deathcap (Amanita citrina). The woods seemed empty, bird wise, and chances appeared low, so we decided to give the White-tailed Eagles another try. We drove to the Oostvaardersplassen again and visited some hides. The first hide gave us a look at a large group of Northern Pintailsand a few of us saw a Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentiles) being chased by two Carrion Crows (Corvus corone). The next hide produced stunning views of Honey Fungus (Armillaria ostoyae) Klaas de Jong a group of seven(!) Hen Harriers (Circus cyaneus), six males and a female, hunting over the reeds. This was a really spectacular event, where some of the harriers landed in a tree, waiting for us to see them through the telescope. An observation to remember! The last light of the day was used for a view point called Grote Praambult, where huge numbers of Great Egrets could be seen. Mammals were especially numerous there, and between the flocks of Konicks Horses (Equus caballus caballus), European Cattle (Bos taurus) and Red Deer (Cervus elaphus), one of us found a Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes). 29 November 2014 The programme said Zeeland so we drove south, fitting in a stop at the Oude Land van Strijen, where recently a group of Lesser White-fronted Geese (Anser erythropus) had been found. Big flocks of Barnacle Geese mixed with Greater White-fronted Geese awaited us, but not the eagerly wanted Lesser ones. All of a sudden a distant raptor started hovering and since it was bigger than the numerous Common Kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) we had seen, it might well be a Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus). Quickly we drove in its direction and when we were closer we could indeed see the dark belly, the longer wings, the light shoulders/dark wrists and the white uppertail. Together with the Peregrine Falcon we discovered shortly after that and the numerous Common Buzzards in the field, we figured that four species of raptor in one piece of road wasn t too bad! We continued our journey south, paused along the road for a large group of Tundra Bean Geese (Anser serrirotris) and stopped at a place where two Red-breasted Geese (Branta ruficollis) were found in a large flock of Brent Geese (Branta bernicla). These stunning birds appeared not too shy and although they sometimes proved inconspicuous, we all had good views through the telescope. The navigation system let us down in finding a spot where Great Northern Diver Klaas de Jong Little Auk (Alle alle) should have been, but the ride instead produced a little lake with four Eurasian Spoonbills (Platalea leucorodia) in it. One of the birds had some colour rings on its left leg, but because the bird was sleeping, we could not see the other leg. The code remained incomplete. At the Oosterscheldekering we found a Great Northern Diver (Gavia immer) in a harbour where we would have lunch, but since weather conditions were not too good, everyone stayed in the bus, so we could drive further and arrive at the Brouwersdam earlier. This turned out to be a great spot, where we found several Red-throated Divers (Gavia stellata), two Rednecked Grebes (Podiceps grisegena), a Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima), some Ruddy Turnstones (Arenaria interpres), a Slavonian Grebe (Podiceps auritus), a lot of Common Goldeneyes (Bucephala Ornitholidays Tour to The Netherlands 27 November 01 December 2014 Page 2

4 clangula) and Red-breasted Mergansers (Mergus serrator) and, peculiarly, only one Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra). There was still some light left, so we visited the Little Auk site after all, but the bird had not been reported today, and we were not able to find it. Still, this was a good day with 65 species of birds seen. 30 November 2014 The province of Fryslân was our destination today and after breakfast we headed north. The first stop was at Sandfirden, where we found a few groups of Pink-footed Geese (Anser brachyrhynchus) and in a larger group near Tjerkwerd, we saw two colour-banded individuals: K40 and E5K. These birds turned out to be adults and both had an impressive life history. K40 appeared to be a male, ringed in August 2008 on Svalbard. His actual age could not be determined, but by now he is at least 8½ years old. E5K appeared to be a female. She was ringed in March 2005 and at that time she was almost 1 year old, so she is now 10½ years old. The colourbands around the neck are working well and both were seen regularly in Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway. We enjoyed the large groups of Barnacle and Greater White-fronted Geese and Eurasian Wigeon. We had lunch at a phenomenal view point in the Workumerwaard. Besides Barnacle Geese and some Great Egrets, there was a Peregrine sitting in one of the meadows, between the Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria). We also saw Bewick s Swans (Cygnus bewickii), a Great Blackbacked Gull (Larus marinus) and a group of Ruff (Calidris pugnax). During a walk to a bird hide we heard Bearded Tit (Panurus biarmicus) and a Northern Goshawk flew by, really rapidly. Fortunately, another individual of this species flew past the hide when we were in it, so we all had much better views. There were also Bewick s Swans in front of the hide. When we walked back, a Water Rail was calling from the reeds. We continued north and arrived at Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope) Klaas de Jong) the Afsluitdijk, the 32 km long dike connecting Fryslân with the province of North Holland, thus cutting of the former Zuiderzee from the Wadden Sea. A short stop in the direction of Harlingen produced a large number of Northern Shovelers. We didn t make an exact count, but we estimated over 1,000 individuals. We continued along the Afsluitdijk towards Kornwerderzand, where we found an amazing number of Black-headed Gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), and a large group of Goosanders, A few Stock Doves (Columba oenas) were present in the harbour and we saw a fairy ring of mushrooms, probably Clouded Funnels again. 1 December 2014 Today was the last day of this trip and we were headed for the coast. Ijmuiden was an obvious choice because of the long piers on both sides of the harbour, running about three km into the North Sea. We decided to start with a walk around the dune lake south of the harbour, and this produced a group of Common Pochard, a Caspian Gull (Larus cachinnans), two Jack Snipes (Lymnocryptes minimus) and two Little Grebes. Then we had lunch near the van and proceeded alongside the pier, where we discovered Ruddy Turnstones, Purple Sandpiper, Sanderling (Calidris alba) and Rock Pipit (Anthus petrosus). Between the piers flew a Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) between the Great Cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) in the direction of the harbour. Time flew and soon we had to turn around to get to Schiphol Airport in time for the flight. The exit of the parking lot gave us stunning views of both Redwing (Turdus iliacus) and Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos) after which we had to say goodbye to the Dutch world of birds and drive into the concrete world, with steel birds...
