Being professional in the workplace is also about personal cares and managing your personal and professional boundaries: MY HEALTH & WELLNESS PLAN 2015: House officer years are often taxing and contribute to increased stress. As doctors we represent the usual distribution of illnesses that occur in the general population (we are not exempt from these) and in some instances, certain disease incidences may be higher in some doctor groups e.g. suicide, liver cirrhosis, depression, misuse of alcohol etc. Therefore, to care for the health of others we need to be mindful of our own health needs. We need skills to monitor our personal wellbeing, have a welldeveloped repertoire of coping strategies and skills to deal to stress, and also seek appropriate help when our own strategies are failing. This exercise is to help identify your coping strategies and also identify other avenues of help should you require them during the year. H&W plan WdB 07/15 Page 1
My Prevocational Educational Supervisor (PES) for 2016 is: (Circle the name) Dr Jules Schofield Ext Dr Nand Kejriwal Ext Dr Etu Ma u Ext Dr Erana Gray Ext 8899 (switchboard) I know that I need to meet with my intern supervisor at the start of the attachment to work on my Professional Development plan (PDP) and quarterly thereafter. If I have any problems regarding my work, interpersonal or professional (including health) concerns, I can contact her/him at any time during the work day. My Medical Council practising certificate (PC) is due for renewal in: (Select the cycle your birthday is in). Certificate cycles When we send out certificate renewal notices Date the new certificate is effective from 1 Dec - 28 (or 29) Feb mid-january 1 March 1 Mar 31 May mid-april 1 June 1 Jun 31 Aug mid July 1 September 1 Sep 30 Nov mid October 1 December I know that it is my responsibility to ensure that I have a current practising certificate or else I cannot work as a doctor in NZ! 2 P age
To promote my personal wellbeing during the year, I plan to: 1. Be mindful of my diet and the need to eat healthy meals. To achieve this I will: 2. Have regular exercise. At this stage, I am planning to achieve this by: 3. Be aware that alcohol dependency is a major problem in the medical profession; women doctors also present with alcohol dependency problems. I also know that binge drinking amongst young New Zealanders is a big issue for us as a nation and that binge drinking will place me statistically at risk of later developing a drinking problem. Do I need to reduce my drinking of alcohol this year - YES / NO I am also aware that doctors become addicted to prescription medicines like benzodiazepines and pain killers (especially the opioids). I am aware that I cannot self-prescribe psychotropic or opioid medications - YES / NO While it no longer looks good for the doctor to smoke cigarettes or cannabis, many continue to smoke on the quiet. This year may be a good time to kick the cigarettes as well for good! Do you need to quit smoking tobacco / cigars / shisha? - YES / NO Do you need help through Quitline YES / NO 4. Have good quality sleep. I usually need about hours of sleep to function best and when I am not on duty / working a long day I plan to retire to bed at about because I am aware that having a routine for sleeping is good. 5. Have regular down time. I plan to have: a. hours down time every day to do something I enjoy or to be alone b. days every month to take time for rest and relaxation - during this time I give myself permission to do absolutely no work c. days to go on annual leave; my holiday plans for this year are: and I will have my leave planned for and will apply for it by. 3 P age
d. I haven t finalised any leave plans yet but am thinking about: ready workforce. I am aware that I need to apply at least 6-weeks before I plan to take leave I will take this into consideration when planning my leave. It is even better if I can put in requests for planned leave earlier in the year. I also realise that if I want to take leave during the winter months when the hospital is busiest that I will need to make an early application for leave because leave must be carefully rationed out at this time to ensure a 6. Allow myself to be sick and not be a hero and come to work (and infect other staff and my patients). I will take time off for recovery when I am sick. In this event, I will contact and. This is to inform them of my absence, handover any important clinical issues (especially those that impact directly on patient care), and to give an expected return date. I realise that if I am away for more than two days, I need to bring a general practitioner s sickness certificate as the organisation requires. I know that I should try to diagnose and manage my own health concerns. Therefore I have located and registered with a general practitioner. My general practitioner is: and I have his / her practice telephone number loaded onto my cell phone. The practice number is: 7. Ensure that I remain within my scope of practice and that I perform tasks that are not outside my comfort zone and competency. I realise that it is risky and stressful to function with uncertainty and particularly if I should place a patient at risk. When I am asked to obtain informed consent this is how I will go about it: 4 P age
8. Start thinking about my longer term career plans. To help me in making these important decisions I will: In addition to discussing this with each clinical attachment supervisor I also know that I can contact the PES and Clinical Education Unit for career guidance and for additional resource assistance. A Career Planning package and counselling is available for all PGY-1 and -2 doctors. 9. It is important that I recognise my early warning signs when I am becoming stressed. These are the typical signs that alert me that I am stressed: 10. Over the years I have learned some (good) coping skills and spiritual strategies that alleviate stress that I can use when pressurised. These include: 5 P age
11. My social support network is very important and I rely on them for support. If I need a listening ear or assistance, my supports (family and friends) are usually: 12. I have a number of interests and hobbies that provide a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment in my life. These include: 13. If I need counselling I can self refer to the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). I realise that this is a confidential service offered outside of the hospital I just need to quote my employee number (on my ID card) when I ring the number 6 P age
