La francophonie ontarienne: Take your students on a "virtual exchange" to a French-speaking community Heather Gauthier Waterloo Region District School Board

Last winter, in a school board not so far away

What is culture?

La francophonie By Grade Grade Grade 1, 2 Grade 3, 4 Grade 5 Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8 Region of Focus Local community Ontario Quebec Eastern, Western, Northern Canada Americas outside of Canada France

What I aimed to do Address the Intercultural Understanding expectations of the Revised FSL curriculum in way that would be engaging and memorable for my students. Integrate listening, speaking, reading, and writing expectations into one project during Term 2.

The Vision

Curricular Connections Listening A3.1 Using information from oral French texts, identify French-speaking communities *locally* and across Ontario, find out about aspects of their cultures, and make connections to personal experiences and their own and other communities A3.2 Using information from oral French texts, identify and demonstrate an understanding of sociolinguistic conventions used in a variety of situations in diverse French-speaking communities *applies to Grade 3 only*

Curricular Connections Speaking B3.1 Communicate information orally about Frenchspeaking communities *locally* and across Ontario, including aspects of their cultures and their contributions to la francophonie and the world, and make connections to personal experiences and their own and other communities *applies to Grade 3 only*

Curricular Connections Reading C3.1 Using information from a variety of French texts, identify French-speaking communities *locally* and across Ontario, find out about aspects of their cultures, and make connections to personal experiences and their own and other communities *applies to Grade 3 only*

Curricular Connections Writing D3.1 Communicate information in writing about Frenchspeaking communities *locally* and across Ontario, including aspects of their cultures and their contributions to la francophonie and the world, and make connections to personal experiences and their own and other communities *applies to Grade 3 only*

Task Description 1. Using postcards (a photo from the community with its name on it) cut in half from a variety of French-speaking communities in Ontario, students will choose a community to research and a partner to present with. 2. Students will use videos, brochures, books, websites, etc. to research different aspects of a Francophone community, going on a virtual exchange. 3. Once students have experienced what their community has to offer (i.e. history, natural resources, tourism, celebrities, Francophone population/resources, etc.), they will prepare a V-log with a partner for their family back home to see (these will be posted to our class website). They will also post a one paragraph summary about their new community. 4. Once the videos have been posted, students will have a chance to listen to the videos of their peers and to respond on our blog, making connections to their home community, but also to the communities that they have visited.

Learning Goals We are exploring French-speaking communities in Ontario using a variety of oral (i.e. videos, recordings) and other French texts (i.e. books, brochures, websites). We are learning to make connections between French-speaking communities in Ontario and our own life experiences.

Success Criteria I can make meaningful connections between a French-speaking community that I have researched and my own community. I can identify key information from written and oral French texts. I can summarize what I ve learned into a series of paragraphs. I can present what I have learned as a short video. I can speak with fluency and expression, in French, using facial expressions and hand gestures. I can respond to the information shared in a classmate s video with a short written response.

Where do the resources come from? Tourist offices around Ontario TFO Education Villages et Visages video series (recently updated more videos available) Community websites & other web resources
