2 international Office The International Office is the contact point for prospective international students, international students and exchange students at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. We take care of your admission and registration procedures, provide help with visas, residence permits and registering with the local authorities, and the search for accommodation. We also provide information about language courses, offer scholarships and organize a large variety of intercultural leisure activities. Supported by cooperation programmes with nearly 100 international universities, we also provide a range of international services for all students, offering help to find and organize internships or exchange studies abroad.

3 Dortmund is alive and buzzing! Dortmund is located in the Ruhr Area ( Ruhrgebiet ), the largest urban agglomeration in Germany, with 5 million inhabitants more than the capital, Berlin! Dortmund, the 8 th largest city in Germany, is a modern cosmopolitan metropolis with nearly inhabitants, well served by excellent regional and municipal infrastructure. A city that was once world renown for steel, coal and beer has turned itself into a centre for innovative technology, and cultural and sporting excellence. Dortmund not only has a thriving shopping and city scene but also boasts a large number of parks, woodland and leisure facilities in and around the city. The city has seven universities and colleges, both public and private, with more than students. An absolute must to visit is Signal Iduna Park, the home of Borussia Dortmund football club, with its ( standing and seated ) capacity, is the largest football stadium in Germany and the seventh largest in Europe. The match day atmosphere inside the stadium is unique and not to be missed! The Christmas festive season opens with the famous Dortmund Christmas Market, a labyrinth of bustling market stalls spread out through the city centre, with the tallest Christmas tree in the world ( 45 metres ) as its centrepiece.

Architecture as a field of study imparts the application of knowledge application related and based on scientific, technical and artistic bodies of knowledge and methods Students gain qualifications for all fields of activity in construction engineering and planning, from design to construction management and supervision. They receive hands-on experience in architectural and planning offices, building authorities, construction companies, building societies, planning, construction and development departments of companies and associations as well as in scientific facilities and institutions. 5 Design The diversity of Design as a field of activity is reflected in all areas of print and electronic media, in public buildings, in the sector of exhibitions and trade fair constructions, in photography, in the production of advertising, in animation and in motion pictures. Students acquire high levels of competence in creative and conceptual thinking, confidence in preparing designs, accuracy and dexterity in executing their projects. Upon graduating, they are qualified to work in team situations and develop design concepts in line with the specifications of commissioned projects and bring these to the final production stage. 6 Information Technology, Electrical Engineering The Electrical Engineering study course offers two major fields: Electrical Energy and Environmental Engineering, and Building Automation Systems, which lay the foundations for professional activities such as development, project work, distribution and maintenance of electrical energy plants and equipment. Studies in Information and Communications Technology include information and media technology, communication technology and information electronics. 7 Computer Science In addition to a sound basic education in the administration and further development of networked systems, the structure and organisation of databases, the design and development of information systems form the core elements of Computer Science. In-depth courses are offered in Applied Computer Science and Computer Engineering. Computer Engineering chiefly deals with hardware and systems engineering, embedded systems, telematics and automation technology. In Applied Computer Science, studies focus on such topics as multimedia, software engineering and database design and management. Medical Computer Science provides training specifically for the rapidly growing IT challenges in the healthcare system. Business Computer science targets the design and deployment of corporate information systems, data processing organization and databases, and the creation, modification and maintenance of user application software packages. 8 mechanical engineering With a tradition as old as civilization itself, Mechanical Engineering is primarily concerned with the design, production and operation of machines and machinery. And, being essentially concerned with virtually anything that moves in some form or another, it plays a central role in activities as diverse as automobile design and construction, manufacturing, computing, micro and nanotechnologies, automation systems, energy generation and supply, and many, many more. In short, Mechanical Engineering today is probably the broadest and most diverse of all engineering disciplines. For today s mechanical engineering student this represents a wide and surprisingly varied range of professional opportunity. Therefore, at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, in addition to providing our students with a solid and comprehensive grounding in engineering basics, we also offer a wide selection of industry-relevant, specialist courses that ensure our graduates have the expertise and skills to pursue a successful career as an engineering professional. 9 Applied social studies Social Work studies prepare students for diverse activities in the social sector, drawing on social work theories and methods of intervention as well as social science research. The fields of activity and target groups in social work are equally diverse as concepts of how theory is put into daily practice. Areas of practice are affected by social issues and policies as well as interdisciplinary reflections, including sociology, psychology, education, social medicine, law, politics and administration up to organisation. Social workers also advise, accompany and empower, support and take care of people in more than 30 vocational fields covering community- and healthcare, social policy- and welfare. This includes working with families, children, youths, adults and senior citizens as well as groups of people in the private, public or voluntary sector. 10 Business Studies Are you a business or management student? If so, you should consider a study-abroad experience at the Faculty of Business Studies with a balance of theoretical and practical content. The Faculty of Business Studies receives international students from all over the world and has more than 20 years experience in student exchanges. We offer study programmes taught in German and in English. For instance, the Bachelor programme in International Business provides a variety of business and management modules taught in English. Within the Master programme, EuroMPM, you will gain competencies in international project management. Please contact us if you have any further specific questions. 12 Application Our application process is fast and easy! The Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts uses an intuitive online portal that guides you through the application process. After you have been nominated by your university, you need to register for the portal and fill out the forms. You also have to upload a number of documents ( see link opposite ). If you would like the International Office to arrange a room reservation for you, state it in your application! You can apply online during the following periods. Application for winter term: 1 st March 1 st June Application deadline for winter term: 1 st June Application deadline for summer term: 1 st December This application process only applies to Erasmus+ students and students of partner universities! 13 Costs Accommodation If you wish to make a reservation for a fully furnished room, the International Office is there to help. Simply state your wish for a room in your online application via the online portal for exchange students Mobility Online. Please note that there is, however, a limited number of rooms available. The accommodation fees for rooms range from 250 to 350. Under normal conditions we cannot take personal preferences into consideration. Study-related Costs All students of Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts need to pay a so-called»semesterbeitrag«of approximately 270 for the current semester. This fee is not a tuition fee but a contribution towards our social facilities. It includes subsidized meal prices in all 10 cafeterias, free access to public libraries and a Semesterticket, the so-called»nrw-ticket«. The ticket allows the holder to travel free on public transport, including buses, underground, tram, local trains in North-Rhine Westphalia. It s a great way of getting around and seeing the region. 14 Leisure Time Activities Students Sports Programme The university itself offers a wide range of exciting free time activities at little or now cost. For a mere 15 per semester you can join the Students Sports Programme which offers more than 100 different sports such as volleyball, fitness courses, parkour, climbing, and dancing lessons take your pick, there is something for everyone! InterKulTreff The InterKulTreff ( IKT ) meets once every month and organizes diverse activities and excursions for international and domestic students, providing a great opportunity to meet new people and see new places! CareerService The CareerService offers a large variety of courses including academic support, preparation for the job, soft skills, coaching, languages and IT all for free! International Culture Café The International Culture Café ( IKC ) hosts events in which students present their cultures by hosting an evening with information, food, music, dancing and a party attendance is free of charge! Theatre and Opera The theatre and opera house have a cooperation with the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts allowing every student two tickets to most of the performances for free plays, operas, ballets and musicals. or, of course you could spend your afternoons wandering around the Their Gallery shopping complex, strolling through Westfalenpark or Rombergpark, or visit Phönixsee, and spend your evenings in one or more the student bars on and around campus.
