IN THIS EDITION THE LEADER Copenhagen s container terminal summer Challenges for shipping Danish shipping is facing major challenges, however, the shipping companies are usually good at deriving benefit from changes. So says Peter Bjerregaard, CEO of the Danish Shipowners Association. Page 3 Mazda new car customer in Malmö Mazda became a new car customer in the spring. Mazda s entire volume of imports from Japan to Sweden now goes via CMP and Malmö. It involves around 4,000 cars per year. Page 4 Unifeeder s large transport network Thanks to Unifeeder, CMP is linked to the global transport networks. Unifeeder s ships arrives at Copenhagen three times a week to load and unload containers. Page 5 Container traffic in Copenhagen The container port in Copenhagen receives goods around the clock. It mainly involves imports, for example, consumables and retail products. Page 6 Revolutionised goods handling The idea of standardised containers emerged in 1937, but didn t have an impact until a few decades later. Since then the container has revolutionised how goods are handled. Page 8 Consumer goods via CMA CGM CMA CGM is the world s third largest container line, shipping consumer goods and other items to Scandinavia. Copenhagen is one of the hubs in the shipping company s transport network. Page 9 Bright future for cruises The cruise season is coming to an end. CMP can look back on 354 arrivals, ten in Malmö and the rest in Copenhagen. And the cruise manager Arnt Møller Pedersen sees a bright future. Page 12 PHOTO: MAX MICHEL MANN Containers a growth market AUTUMN S FIRST ISSUE OF CMP News focuses on one of shipping s most classic segments, namely container traffic. We report how important this traffic is for CMP and also present a number of customers and collaborative partners within this area. We are proud and delighted that we have six container lines permanently located with us as customers. Among those presented in more detail are Unifeeder and CMA CGM. I would also like to recommend the article that describes the history of the container, which throws light on the revolution that accompanied the use of standardised containers. APROPOS CONTAINERS, it might be of interest that this market is regarded as one of the real fast-growers for the coming years. At least according to the report, Europe s Seaports 2030: Challenges Ahead, which the European Commission presented just before the summer. It says that goods volumes in the EU s ports will increase by 50% up to 2030, but that container traffic will grow even more. In addition, container vessels are getting bigger all the time. The latest generation of ships take 18,000 containers, placing new demands on technology and infrastructure in Europe s ports. It certainly is an exciting development, but also challenging! IN THIS ISSUE OF CMP NEWS we also sum up the 2013 cruise season that is coming to an end. We have received 354 ships and 840,000 passengers from 150 countries. This confirms Copenhagen s position as the Nordic region s leading cruise destination. It is also particularly gratifying that cruise traffic in Malmö is starting to get off the ground with ten arrivals and approximately 40,000 passengers during the season. ANOTHER SUCCESS STORY is our car handling operation. A new collaboration with Mazda started in the spring, which we write about in one of the articles. We are now collaborating with 20 or so different makes of car and this year we anticipate having some 520,000 cars in circulation in Malmö. Pleasant reading! 3 Peter Bjerregaard, CEO of the Danish Shipowners Association: Danish shipping has colossal challenges The world s 4th largest merchant navy fleet is fighting against global overcapacity, however, Danish shipping companies are good at turning developments to their advantage, says Peter Bjerregaard DANISH SHIPPING IS FACING colossal challenges, regardless of whether we are talking about dry bulk, container or tank. We are in the middle of a difficult period, because the market is characterized by major overcapacity says Peter Bjerregaard, CEO of the Danish Shipowners Association. A global market where world trade is not falling but where there are still too many ships to transport the goods, offers scope for the shipping companies to be very flexible and far-sighted. The Danish merchant navy fleet is at a record level and is currently the fourth largest fleet in the world, and I am pretty certain that the shipping companies are good at turning developments to their advantage. We ve got to prepare ourselves and find new ways, with increased emphasis on competitive types of ship and increased cooperation, as well as via new constellations. A.P. Møller-Maersk s plans for closer cooperation with MSC and CMA CGM are one manifestation of a desire to optimise the structure. PETER BJERREGAARD PERCEIVES three crucial milestones in the initiative to secure the growth of Danish shipping, all of which are reflected in the Government s maritime growth plan. The growth plan was adopted in 2012, when shipping companies, subcontractors and the business sector collaborated on a review of Danish shipping. Implementation of its findings is now underway. The first milestone of the growth plan is concrete proposals on strengthening the overall conditions. In this context we are talking about registration conditions, phasing out of specific Danish rules etc. The second milestone is more training. The first students will be starting a new shipping course at Copenhagen Business School in That will be the spearhead, in purely training terms, for the future skills requirement of The Blue Denmark. The Danish Shipowners Association s own training will proceed, though on a provisional basis. At the same time. the training will be improved, to align with offshore. The third milestone is to put Copenhagen on the global map as a location where shipping companies want to establish themselves in order to acquire a platform so that they can market themselves in Europe. We have excellent overall conditions compared to other countries, a transparent society and a skilled workforce. But we are too introverted, so it is vital that we market ourselves more globally. MOREOVER, PETER BJERREGAARD EMPHASISES, 90% of Danish shipping is cross trade, i.e. the cargo is located outside Denmark. Global development is therefore absolutely crucial: The free trade agreement between the USA and the EU is very important, and it is vital that China and Russia are part of the WTO. India and Africa are strongly emerging markets, and we want to see more growth in northsouth shipments, rather than east-west. The essence of this is that expanding populations and free trade generate the need for increased exchange of goods and more transport. I am therefore full of confidence on Danish shipping s behalf! 4 Mazda has been a new customer at CMP since April with an estimated annual volume of 4,000 cars. PHOTO: JOHAN RAMBERG Mazda: new customer at CMP Another Japanese car brand is now joining Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Mitsubishi, with Mazda having become a new car customer at CMP in April this year. FACTS: Mazda New car customer at CMP since April ,000 Mazda cars/year are expected to arrive at CMP. The cars are produced in Japan and shipped via ports in Barcelona, Zeebrugge and Antwerp to European destinations. Mazda Motor Logistics Europe logistics organisation based in Belgium. Handles 150,000 units (cars) per year. THE MAIN REASON that we chose CMP is the regular and direct feeder service out from our European hub in Zeebrugge to Sweden, says Marcel Eekhof, Senior Manager Vehicle Logistics Europe. Mazda Motor Logistics Europe is the logistics organisation, based in Belgium, which deals with purchase of logistics services etc. and management of the daily flows from different ports for inward passage to dealers in Europe. It entails 150,000 cars a year produced in Japan and shipped via three European hubs Barcelona, Zeebrugge and Antwerp to European destinations. Marcel Eekhof says that 100% of the volume of Mazda cars imported from Japan to Sweden will go via CMP in Malmö. It involves about 4,000 cars per year. CARS ARE DELIVERED from Zeebrugge in Belgium to Malmö on a weekly basis having been ordered by dealers. On arrival CMP handles the cars, loading them into railway waggons for transport to Northern Sweden or to SkandiaTransport s facility for further transport by truck to southern parts of Sweden, he says. Even though the operation is working well, he continues, we are nevertheless anticipating further improvements in terms of efficiency to meet the standard that we are used to in other continental ports. DURING THE LAST DECADE CMP has developed into an important logistics centre for new cars. One important factor is the Öresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark with its versatile transport facilities. Another important factor is Malmö and Copenhagen s strategic location in relation to the rest of the Nordic region, Russia and the Baltic markets. Today CMP is regarded as the Nordic countries largest port for import of cars, with twenty or so different makes of car and around 520,000 vehicles in circulation every year. 4

THEME CONTAINER Rapid connection to the rest of the world Unifeeder s short sea traffic establishes links with the rest of Europe and the global hubs. The fact that we can accommodate such a large network with three departures a week is a major benefit for our customers, says Ebbe Bisgaard. PHOTO: MAX MICHEL MANN SOME OF THE PERMANENT visitors to CMP are Unifeeder s ships, which arrives three times a week at CMP to unload and load containers in the terminal in Copenhagen. The traffic is a part of Unifeeder s large network of feeder, short sea and intermodal container transport, which covers Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, with direct links to the global transport network. Of the three weekly arrivals to Copenhagen, they have two connections to Hamburg and Bremerhaven and one to Rotterdam. Unifeeder s activities are distributed, with three quarters in feeder and one quarter in short sea services, and we call at 40 ports in the Nordic region, the Baltic States, UK, Holland and Germany, Russia and Finland, says Ebbe Bisgaard, Country Manager at Unifeeder A/S. WE MEET EBBE BISGAARD BESIDE BJORG, which has just arrived at the terminal in Copenhagen and is typical of the smaller container ships that are effective for short sea services. Bjorg has a capacity of TEU, and unloads and loads about 150 containers here in CMP, before going on to Århus, Fredericia and from there to Bremerhaven. A container which goes out of Copenhagen has the advantage of fast connections with the other 39 ports in our network, or for further transport from Hamburg, Bremerhaven or Rotterdam. The fact that we can accommodate such a large network with three departures a week is a major benefit for our customers. Moreover, we offer door-todoor services, where we supplement our ships with further transport directly to the recipient by rail or road. THE MARKET FOR INTER-EUROPEAN short sea container transport is expected to expand because the customers can see economic benefits in moving away from the increasing costs of road transport. Bjorg is leased to Unifeeder, as is the rest of the company s fleet: It is our policy, and we feel that leasing and chartering ships and equipment is in our customers interests, rather than owning them ourselves, says Ebbe Bisgaard. We thus ensure that the ships are always modern and comply with the relevant requirements. Unifeeder started operating in 1977, with a ship for 70 containers. The operation has its head office in Århus, and is market leader in Northern Europe in feeder and short sea networks for container transport. In 2012 Unifeeder handled some 2 million container units, and clocked up more than 8,000 dockings in over 40 ports. 5

THEME CONTAINER The terminal receives PHOTO: DENNIS ROSENFELDT our consumer goods Jacob Fogh, Terminal Manager Copenhagen round-the-clock Efficiency and flexibility is a priority in the on-going development of CMP s container terminal in Copenhagen THE BULK OF CMP S CONTAINER trade is concentrated on the terminal in Copenhagen s Frihavn. Container ships call in here at all times of the day and night on feeder routes, including from the large container hubs in Hamburg, Rotterdam and Bremerhaven, and the staff on container cranes and straddle carriers are busy when there are ships in the terminal. We accommodate the shipping companies need to be able to unload and load round-the-clock. Feeder ships do not always arrive on schedule, and the aim is therefore that we should always be ready to receive them, even if they are overdue, says Jacob Fogh, Terminal Manager in CMP. Six shipping companies are permanent residents in 6

THEME CONTAINER PHOTO: MAX MICHEL MANN PHOTO: MAX MICHEL MANN PHOTO: MAX MICHEL MANN Copenhagen is primarily a port for imports, with the volume of containers largely governed by private consumption in the capital region, Zealand and Lolland- Falster. A new feature is that we also have proper training for the dock workers, which ensures that the skills level is broader and documented, says Jacob Fogh. CHARACTERISTICALLY FOR THE TERMINAL, there is more freight in the containers that are brought ashore than the containers that are lifted on-board the ships. Copenhagen is primarily a port for imports. Our customers market is to a large degree governed by developments in private consumption in the capital region, Zealand and Lolland-Falster, and it is largely cyclical and difficult to influence. We immediately note if demand from consumers rises or falls. But overall we are still not noting the upturn that the export ports have experienced. What we can affect is how efficiently we work in the terminal. Our priority is to make conditions as attractive as possible for the shipping companies and our customers. Ways in which we do this include agreements which take into account the individual shipping company s requirements and business model, and by offering docking on favourable terms in the terminal in Malmö, which can be combined with docking in Copenhagen. We are continuously investing in new machinery and EVEN NOW ACCESS TO THE TERMINAL is not optimal. There are a lot of construction projects in the area, and this affects lorry traffic, but this will soon improve. A crucial factor for increased accessibility is the new Nordhavnsvej road and tunnel, which will ensure a more direct link between the sea and the motorway network. Copenhagen s dock areas have been substantially developed in recent years, and new housing and recreational use of the port areas is moving closer to the commercial FACTS: Copenhagen container terminal port. 8 THEME CONTAINER Standardised containers started to be used on a larger scale in the 1960s x x mm PHOTO: MAX MICHEL MANN The container: a rational game-changer The container has revolutionised the global freight- and transport industry. Loading and unloading has been rationalised as the container is handled and moved as a unit: over national borders, through transshipments and on different modes of transport. 8 BEFORE CONTAINERS, goods and merchandise were stored in dockside warehouses, packed in various ways. A container-like solution existed in 18th century England, with the use of large wooden boxes to transport coal. When the ships docked, the goods were moved out onto the quay to be loaded. To start with manually and from the early 1900s using cranes and winches. However, a lot could go wrong and the timetables were rarely reliable. Many ships spent as mush time at quayside as they did out at sea. In 1937 the American Malcolm McLean had the idea of a standardised container to achieve more efficient loading and unloading. In 1956 his first container ship was put into operation in the USA and ten years later the container started to be used in Europe. To start with many shipping companies were sceptical towards McLean s idea. So he set up his own company, Sea-Land Inc. (sold to Maersk Shipping in the 1990s). With an increased distribution of containers, companies started increasingly to invest in the new technology. THE STANDARD DIMENSIONS for containers varied, primarily between the USA and Europe, and protracted negotiations commenced. Finally, standardised ISO dimensions were established for the container s length, width and height (6,058 x 2,438 x 2,591 mm). The transport industry changed radically during the 1960s and 1970s. From manual goods handling or handling in small units, goods started to be loaded in larger standardised units such as containers and trailers. A breakthrough, saving a lot of time and money. The term TEU, Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit is used to measure volume or capacity. A 40 foot container holds 2 TEU. It is easy to compare the capacity of ships and ports using this system.

THEME CONTAINER PHOTO: CMA CGM Roy Hayward, operations manager Scandinavia Global giant with strong presence in Scandinavia CMA CGM is France s largest, and the world s third largest, container operation. It has gone from a small niche shipping company to a large, global operation. It has been operating in Scandinavia since 2008, in Copenhagen as well as other locations. OUR JOURNEY IN SCANDINAVIA started in 2003 when we set up our own network of agents. In 2008 we started to call at Scandinavian ports with our own tonnage, which felt right as part of our long-term focus, says Roy Hayward, operations manager for Scandinavia. CMA CGM has offices in Norway, Sweden and Denmark and puts into twelve Scandinavian ports. We want to be close to the market and be able to offer personal contact. We have consequently increased our local presence, says Roy Hayward. THE COMPANY S LOADS to Scandinavia primarily consist of consumer goods, while the goods that leave the area are steel, paper, chemicals and some processed goods. We have several projects under way in collaboration with the industry to identify new transport solutions. We will launch at least one new product already this year that might be of interest for the Öresund region, says Roy Hayward. CMA CGM is very pleased with its collaboration with CMP, which Roy Hayward ranks highly. We have a first-rate dialogue surrounding how we can create a good transport chain together, and would like to praise CMP for its work and its way of adapting to us as a customer. 10 Cruises modern day charter trips Arnt Møller Pedersen, head of cruise operations at CMP, looks back on this year s season, which is now coming to an end. He sees a bright future for cruise traffic. Pullmantur Empress at the new cruise terminal in Malmö. This year CMP has received 354 cruise ship arrivals with 840,000 passengers from 150 countries. Arnt Møller Pedersen COO Cruise and Ferries PHOTO: JOHAN RAMBERG 10 PHOTO: DENNIS ROSENFELDT THIS SEASON WE HAVE really put Malmö on the map as a cruise destination. And next year our three new terminals will be opening at Oceankaj in Nordhavn in Copenhagen. The new terminal in Frihamnen in Malmö has played a role in the increased number of ships coming to the city. We have converted an old warehouse into a beautiful cruise terminal with a waiting room and check-in/out facilities. Malmö municipality has also invested in a walkway into the city. The cruise season is counted from mid-april to the end of October. But some ships also call into Copenhagen around Christmas time. This year we will have a total of 344 arrivals in Copenhagen and ten in Malmö. This represents 840,000 passengers from 150 countries and 240,000 crew. In just ten years the number of passengers has increased from 173,000 to 840,000! The most passengers come from Germany, followed by the USA and Canada, England, Spain and Italy in that order. BEARING IN MIND that only one per cent of all people have ever been on a cruise, there is fantastic potential for development. Taking a cruise is good value for money. A cruise in our region costs from about 5,000 kronor for one week. With everything included, apart from drinks. We have very competitive prices it is the modern day equivalent of the charter trip. And once you take a cruise then you are very likely to come back, feels Arnt Møller Pedersen. It is quite simply addictive. HALF OF THE SHIPS change passengers in Copenhagen. Those that change passengers in Copenhagen spend three times as much money as those that only call in here. The turnover for the cruise industry as a whole is 1.4 billion Danish kronor in Copenhagen alone, says Arnt Møller Pedersen. This includes hotels, local transport, visits to various sights, purchases, restaurant visits and so on. COPENHAGEN HAS BEEN DESIGNATED Europe s Leading Cruise Port by World Travel Awards on no less than five occasions. The votes come from both professional people and travellers within the travel and tourism industry. This shows that CMP has achieved a unique position in the global cruise industry. The port s excellent capacity, which enables twelve ships to be received simultaneously in Malmö and Copenhagen, along with its proximity to the city centre and two well-functioning international airports in the region, has played a major role in the nomination, says Arnt Møller Pedersen. THE GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION in relation to the Baltic States, Norway s coastline and Northern Europe, a wellfunctioning collaboration between different actors in Copenhagen and in Malmö and well-developed logistics are also among the success factors.

NOTICES PHOTO: MAX MICHEL MANN DFDS Pearl Seaways en route into Copenhagen in June 2013 DFDS successfully mixes traffic DFDS has set a new cargo record on its ships Crown Seaways and Pearl Seaways, which provide the daily service between CMP and Oslo. DFDS Copenhagen-Oslo route set a record in April for the number of trucks and trailers it carried. The daily connection from CMP is a popular passenger service, which is marketed as a mini cruise with a large holiday and entertainment element. Notwithstanding that, DFDS also succeeded in increasing sales of the freight component on the route to Northern Scandinavia. The new monthly record on the route is 1,552 trucks and trailers, distributed over the two ships Pearl Seaways and Crown Seaways, compared with the previous record of 1,547 units from September The growth is due to both an increased influx of new customers, and increased cooperation with the existing customers, says Line Manager Freight, Rasmus K. Hansen. The daily service is part of DFDS extensive Ro-Ro network in Northern Europe. We always have a synergy between passengers and cargo on our ships, says Gert Jakobsen, Head of Communications at DFDS. On some routes the vessels carry mainly cargo, or they are combined cargo and passenger ships as on the Esbjerg Harwich route. However, on the Oslo route, the marketing for which includes mini cruises, it is primarily passengers, and the freight component is naturally limited by the 1,000 lane metres that are available on the car deck, so it is important to load really effectively. Trailer workshop established at Frihamnen in Malmö A new trailer workshop is established on Lodgatan just outside Frihamnen in Malmö. In addition to building a workshop to repair trailers, PNO Sverige AB, Sweden s leading trailer rental company, is going to construct a lorry inspection facility and an office. The option will also potentially be available for drivers to stay overnight. The property is some 1,600 sqm and the outdoor area is 11,000 sqm. - In the long-term we are hoping to be able to receive assistance from PNO to repair damaged trailers that we have unloaded from the vessels and possibly also for repair of containers on behalf of our customers, says Göran Sjöström, Marketing Coordinator at CMP. CMP joins network for increased sustainability It will soon be a year since CMP became a member of SMGC, a network with the remit of getting companies to work more sustainably. Around 50 companies are involved in the network in Sweden. - We want to generate networks and involvement in our region, says Mats Clementz, maintenance manager in CMP s engineering department, who has already found time to arrange the first workshop. - We influence sustainability through the decisions we take every day in normal operations and when we are facing major refurbishments, modifications or replacements. Precisely what the maintenance people have been doing all the time! However working more sustainably within the maintenance field requires engineers and economists to find a common language. - Engineers find it difficult to express themselves in economic terms and economists find it difficult to understand the technical arguments. With SMGC s assistance, economic models are used which describe the sustainability value in different decisions, for example, in relation to investments. - The companies that succeed in making the decisions that are most sustainable in the long-term have a competitive advantage. Nobody wants to do business with an organisation that wastes resources. Would you like to receive news by ? Send an , with your name, to cmport@cmport.com. 12 Profile PROFILE: SAMIR HAMZIĆ Samir wants to be involved in Northern Harbour s entire journey SAMIR LOOKS HAPPY when he talks about his job. I can see myself here in Northern Harbour even in 30 years time. A lot of exciting things are going to happen. There is tremendous potential for development. Samir s commitment shines through when he talks about Northern Harbour, where there is great potential for development, both for the port and for the city of Malmö. I want to be involved when Northern Harbour grows into a large, modern and attractive terminal. He came to Sweden in 1994 as a 15-year old from a war-torn Bosnia. In response to whether he now feels most Swedish or Bosnian, he ducks the question. But what if he goes to an international football match between the countries? Ha ha ha. I d wear the Bosnian shirt. He is precise about the date and year when he talks about his journey with CMP. It was in January ten years ago that Samir worked his first day at CMP. Then as a port worker, now he is supervisor in Northern Harbour in Malmö. PHOTO: JOHAN RAMBERG Samir emphasises that the potential for development in Northern Harbour is massive. IN 2005 SAMIR WAS appointed team leader for the car operation. Two years later I became supervisor in the same area. Then in 2009 I was made supervisor in the container department. When the work on Northern Harbour got underway, Samir was involved from the start. We opened in On 16 May the RoRo traffic started with Finnpartner at quay 703. On 21 September of the same year the first container ship, Ceres, arrived at quay 706. Samir is very happy with his job. He describes it as exciting and with great potential for development. As a supervisor I am responsible for everyday operations here in Northern Harbour. It means that I am in continuous contact with team leaders and take care of production. He deals with the container ships and plans unloading and loading. On the day before arrival he books people with the right expertise and ensures that the container crane is in good shape. I am really meticulous. I like order and method, and yes, I m a control freak, he says smiling. It s about finding the right balance the customer has to be satisfied with the operation and they very much want things to go quickly and smoothly. At the same time I have to think about safety and the work environment. In parallel with the everyday work, Samir is heavily involved in developing the infrastructure in Northern Harbour.
