4 E E FECTIVE ECTIVE EFFECTI ECTIVE ECTIVE ENCES FERENCES FERENCES NFERENCES International AIDS conferences The International AIDS Society is the custodian of the International AIDS Conference, which takes place every two years. The International AIDS Conference is the premier gathering for those working in the field of HIV, as well as policy makers, persons living with HIV and other individuals committed to ending the pandemic. Numbers for the upcoming XIX International AIDS Conference in Washington in July 2012: 20,000 delegates from nearly 200 countries 800 scholarship recipients over 2,000 journalists over 700 volunteers 250 sessions nearly 300 lobal Village activities nearly 150 satellite meetings over 10,000 abstract submissions. Through the platform of the conferences we provide opportunities to: Increase knowledge and expertise of professionals working in HIV/AIDS Identify gaps in research and policy Share experiences and best practice Network and develop partnerships.

5 CHALLEN WLEDE ESEARCH SCIEN SC SCIE ENCE CE SCIENC What is HIV and AIDS? Being HIV positive is not the same as having AIDS. You don t actually get AIDS. You might get infected with HIV, and later you might develop AIDS. You can get infected with HIV from anyone who s infected, even if they don t look sick and even if they have not tested HIV-positive yet. The blood, vaginal fluid, semen, and breast milk of people infected with HIV has enough of the virus in it to infect other people. HIV: Human Immunodeficiency Virus, the virus that causes AIDS. HIV destroys certain blood cells that are crucial to the normal function of the immune system, which defends the body against illness. AIDS: There is no cure for HIV/AIDS, but it is preventable. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, which occurs when the immune system is weakened by HIV to the point where a person is susceptible to any number of opportunistic infections or diseases.

6 Prevention Tools Since most people get the HIV virus by having unprotected sex with an infected person, sharing a needle with someone who is infected, being born to an infected mother, many prevention tools exist. Mobilizing CONDOM use is one of the least expensive methods for preventing HIV transmission. MALE CIRCUMCISION reduces the risk of HIV transmission by about 60%. SYRINE EXCHANE PRORAMMES for unique needles use for people who inject drugs. Know Your Status. et Tested. PRE-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS (PrEP) involves taking HIV drugs before engaging in behaviors that place one at risk for HIV infection. POST-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS (PEP) involves short-term use of HIV drugs to reduce risk of infection in people who have recently been exposed to HIV. Promoting Connecting Mobilizing MICROBICIDES are substances (usually delivered via gels or foams) that can substantially reduce transmission of one or more sexually transmitted infections (STIs) when applied to the vagina. To lower the risk of MOTHER-TO-CHILD TRANSMISSION, HIV-positive women should use HIV drugs during pregnancy, delivery, and breast-feeding, and infants should use HIV drugs after birth. 7 Key Affected and Vulnerable Populations IAS advocates for addressing the needs of women and children and has identified, in collaboration with its international partners, 20 priority research questions to move forward on prevention, treatment and care delivered to mothers and children. IAS advocates against homophobic laws and other kind of oppressions of sexual minorities that put at higher risk of HIV these populations and hinder their access to health services. Sex workers as well as their clients, and clients sexual partners are all at higher risk of HIV infection. IAS supports harm reduction policies and promotes decriminalization of drug use to improve access to HIV prevention, treatment and care for people who use drugs. IAS advocates for the lifting of entry, stay or restriction bans for People Living with HIV and supports actions against compulsory HIV tests and related deportations.

8 Corporate Social Responsibility In 2010, the IAS officially registered as a member of the UN lobal Compact, a citizenship and sustainability initiative. We are committed to aligning our operations and strategies with the UN lobal Compact s principles: Human Rights Activities should support and respect the protection of human rights and make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses. labour standards The right to collective bargaining, elimination of forced and compulsory labour; abolition of child labour and elimination of discrimination. To further commit as an open, transparent and accountable nonprofit organization, the IAS officially embraced the Code of ood Practice for NOs responding to HIV/ AIDS in August Environment Business should support precautionary approach to environmental challenges, promote greater environmental responsibility and encourage environmentally friendly technologies. Anti-corruption Business should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery. In an effort to become socially responsible, the IAS reduces, re-uses, recycles and raises awareness. Promoting Connecting Mobilizing R RESEARC CH RESEARC BILIZIN ILIZINMOBILIZ
