PRESS RELEASE ARTISSIMA 2015 The winners of the illy Present Future Prize Sardi per l Arte Back to the Future Prize Promos Scalo Milano New Entries Prize Reda Prize and the Fondazione Ettore Fico Prize Turin, 7 November 2015 The winners of five of the six prizes that will be awarded during Artissima were announced yesterday: the illy Present Future Prize, which is devoted to the leading up-and-coming artists and is now in its 15th year; the Sardi per l Arte Back to the Future Prize, for the gallery in the Back to the Future section that presented the most significant project in terms of historical merit and set-up of the booth; the Promos Scalo Milano New Entries Prize for the best gallery for research and the promotion of young artists participating in New Entries, the section for galleries opened for less than five years and are participating in Artissima for the first time; the Reda Prize, new this year and targeting artists under 35 who use photography as an expressive medium and are at Artissima in the Main Section, New Entries and Present Future sections; the Fondazione Ettore Fico Prize, established in 2009 to promote the work of young artists. 2 ILLY PRESENT FUTURE PRIZE Carlo Bach, Art Director of illycaffè, and Sarah Cosulich Canarutto, director of Artissima 2015, announced the winner of the 15th illy Present Future Prize dedicated to the best emerging young talents: Alina Chaiderov from the gallery Antoine Levi (Paris) with the works Before 1989 we kept the bananas in the closet (2014) and Spaces within (separated from the outside air by layer upon layer of protection (2014). Alina Chaiderov (1984, St Petersburg, Russia) was selected by a prestigious international jury composed of Daniel Baumann (Kunsthalle Zürich), Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev (2016 Director of Castello di Rivoli Museo d Arte Contemporanea GAM, Galleria di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Turin), Dieter Roelstraete (Documenta 14, Kassel) and Maurizio Morra Greco (collector, Naples). The jury chose the artist based on the following motivation: The 2015 illy Present Future Prize goes to Alina Chaiderov for her historically informed exploration of Soviet memory through the irreverent prism of everyday sculptural form. The work Before 1989 we kept the bananas in the closet (2014) has been acquired by Fondazione Ettore Fico and will enter the collection of the MEF Museo Ettore Fico, Turin, a contemporary art institution opened in September The illy Present Future Prize, first presented in 2012, culminates with the staging of an exhibition at the Castello di Rivoli Museo d Arte Contemporanea. With the illy Present Future Prize, the company based in Trieste, and the curators and museum directors tapped by Artissima and the Castello di Rivoli Museo di Arte Contemporanea make a major contribution to the success of emerging artists, emphasizing the innovative role of the fair in Turin as an artistic institution with an international reputation.

3 SARDI PER L ARTE BACK TO THE FUTURE PRIZE The Sardi per l Arte Back to the Future Prize was awarded to Ellen de Bruijne (Amsterdam) and Dan Gunn (Berlin) for their project on the artist Michael Smith (Chicago, US, 1951). Established in 2014, the award is given to the gallery with the most deserving project in terms of historical relevance and presentation of the booth among the 28 galleries that participated in the section this year. The award stems from the partnership with the Sardi per l Arte Foundation and consists of a cash prize of 5,000 euro for galleries participating in Back to the Future, the section of Artissima that hosts museum solo shows with historic works by artists from the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties, and that this year has focused for the first time on the decade between , a period fundamental for interpreting today s art. The jury, composed of Sabine Breitwieser (Museum der Moderne Salzburg), Christine Macel (Musée National d Art Moderne Centre Pompidou, Paris), María Inés Rodríguez (CAPC, Bordeaux), and Lorenzo Paini (Enea Righi Collection, Bologna), awarded the prize with the following motivation: The artist s work is distinguished by his ability to develop conceptual work with a sense of humour, which he uses for biting critique of the social conventions of his era. The jury found common ground in terms of appreciation and interest, and praised the quality of the artist s works and layout. 4 REDA PRIZE The first Reda Prize was awarded to Calla Henkel (1978, Boston, USA) & Max Pitegoff (1988, Minneapolis, USA), presented by Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi, Berlin (Main Section). The prize, presented this year for the first time, is for artists under 35 who use photography as their medium and are participating in the Main Section, New Entries and Present Future sections. The winner will then publish a monograph with Humboldt Books. Calla Henkel & Max Pitegoff won with the work Times, Berlin, Spring, The jury, composed of Kerstin Meincke (Museum Folkwang, Essen), Cristiano Raimondi (NMNM, Munich), Francesco Zanot (Camera Centro Italiano per la Fotografia, Turin), Giovanna Silva (Humboldt Books, Milan), and Philip and Rosella Rolla (collectors, Rolla Foundation, Switzerland) awarded the prize for the following reasons: The jury decided to award Calla Henkel & Max Pitegoff for their ability to exploit the typical language of photography, documenting gesture and performance, updating it and transforming it into an authentic subject of research. In a work combining photography and theatre, individuality and society, control and collaboration, there is also the ability to create images with an immediate visual impact, the basis for stratifying numerous meanings. The compactness of the individual series comprising their underlying research makes them perfect for an artistic publication. 5 FONDAZIONE ETTORE FICO PRIZE The Fondazione Ettore Fico Prize, established in 2009 to promote the work of young artists, was won by Anne Imhof (1978, Gießen, Germany) presented by Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi, Berlin (Main Section) with the work Untitled 2, The work was purchased and will enter the collection of the MEF Museo Ettore Fico in Turin, a contemporary art institution opened in September 2014 at Via Cigna 114. The prize is aimed at supporting a project by the winning artist, from the stating of an exhibition to a publication. In addition to the work by Anna Imhof, the Ettore Fico Foundation has also acquired the work Before the 1989 we kept the bananas in the closet, 2014 by Alina Chaiderov, winner of Present Future Prize 2015, presented by the gallery Antoine Levi, Paris; Organic Submission, 2015, by Kate Levant, presented by the gallery Collicaligreggi, Catania (Main Section); Mai-mai-non-lasciai-andare, 2015, by Rebecca Moccia, presented by Massimodeluca, Mestre, Venice (Main Section). The jury, composed of Andrea Busto (MEF Museo Ettore Fico, Turin), Letizia Ragaglia (Museion, Bolzano), Alberto Salvadori (Museo Marino Marini, Florence), Andrea Viliani (MADRE, Naples) and Renato Alpegiani (collector, Turin), cited the following motivations for the award: The jury wanted to award the multifaceted nature of the artist's practice, which combines different perspectives of the contemporary art lexicon; moving fluently from sculpture to drawing, painting and video to performance, Imhof's work always demonstrates great command of her own artistic language. 6 PROMOS SCALO MILANO NEW ENTRIES The first Promos Scalo Milano New Entries Prize was awarded to Galerie Laurent Mueller, Paris. The prize, amounting to 5,000 euros, was awarded to the gallery deemed most deserving in seeking out and promoting the young artists in the New Entries section, reserved for the most interesting up-and-coming galleries on the international scene: participants have been in business for less than five years and are at Artissima for the first time. One of the artists represented by the winning gallery will have the chance to create a site-specific installation at Scalo Milano, currently under construction, as part of the Piazze d Artista project that, for the first time in Italy, merges retail and art. The jury for 2015, composed of Pierre Bal-Blanc (Documenta 14, Kassel), Jacopo Crivelli Visconti (critic and curator, São Paulo), Abaseh Mirvali (independent curator, Berlin Mexico City) and Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (collector, Turin), awarded the prize for the following reasons: The jury had great expectations regarding the form, language, articulation and investment in the space, from galleries participating for the very first time in a fair which is well known for its bold curatorial statements. According to the jury, the winner is Galerie Laurent Mueller. Its presentation demonstrates with more clarity how interesting results are born from a profitable collaboration between the artist and the gallery.
