Delivering value in construction materials and services to the London 2012 Olympics
2 Aggregate Industries The perfect supply partner for the London 2012 Olympics Aggregate Industries is a leading player in the construction industry producing and supplying a wide range of aggregates, asphalt, ready-mixed concrete and precast concrete products. With over 350 operations in the UK, the Channel Islands and Northern Europe, our unique portfolio of construction materials and delivery solutions made us the natural choice not only to meet, but to exceed, the targets laid out by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) in the bid to supply the London 2012 Olympics. Strength in resource We own and operate Europe s largest granite quarry, employ nearly 4,000 people and produce over 40 million tonnes of material a year. As part of the Holcim Group, Aggregate Industries can also call upon the resource of a leading global supplier of cement, aggregates, ready-mixed concrete, asphalt and related services. Holcim are a business with over 80,000 employees across 70 countries worldwide, and are world leaders in sustainability and innovation. Our unrivalled strength as a materials and service provider positions us as the partner of choice for large, high profile and, at times, complicated major projects such as the Olympics. With a varied and diverse list of specialist companies within the Aggregate Industries group, we have the expertise, products, solutions and all-round capability to deliver truly Olympic results.
3 Over 350 operations in the UK, the Channel Islands and Northern Europe Over 40 million tonnes of material produced each year
4 Aggregate Industries Raising the bar for sustainable construction We realise that all we build today is creating a legacy for tomorrow. That s why our goal is not only to produce the best quality materials, but also the most sustainable. It s this approach to sustainable practices that positioned Aggregate Industries as the perfect supply chain partner for the London 2012 Olympics. The Responsible Source TM We have been working for more than a decade to create sustainable solutions for all our core markets. In 2009, this pioneering commitment saw us become the first company in the world to be certified to BES 6001, the Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products, by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). Today, all our UK manufactured products are certified as EXCELLENT under the BES 6001 standard. The BES 6001 standard enables our customers to have full confidence in sourcing materials from a responsible manufacturer under stringent criteria. This helps our customers meet their sustainability targets more easily. Products are assessed on: Carbon management Resource use Waste Water management Life cycle assessment Transport Community engagement Employment and skills. We continue to remain right at the very forefront of sustainability, leading the way in the development of more sustainable forms of construction. From substituting sustainable ingredients in our concrete and asphalt, to the evolution of new innovative systems of construction. It is precisely this sustainable approach to construction that has led to the development of our Life strategy - a brand to encompass the widest range of sustainable product and service solutions from one manufacturer. Life doesn t just set a precedent, it also sets a standard. Each of the products and solutions that carry the Life logo meet or exceed at least one of the three benchmarks that we have set in the key areas of: Carbon reduction Must reduce carbon in manufacture or in use by at least 20% Non-primary material content Must contain a minimum of 45% non-primary material based on the entire product mix Water treatment or management within a SUDS solution The management of the quality and quantity of water within a Sustainable Drainage System. 20% reduction in CO2 45% non-primary materials Sustainable Drainage Systems For more information on our Life products and services visit FM96927 EMS96928
We put sustainable practices at the heart of our business, now we are helping our customers do the same. 5
6 Construction on a truly Olympic scale Hockey Arena Work first commenced on the Olympic Park for the London 2012 Olympics back in It has been a construction project of mammoth proportions, involving the transformation and complete revitalisation of a former industrial area on a 500 acre site in the east of the city. This colossal sporting complex houses the athletes Olympic Village together with a number of the major sporting venues including the flagship Olympic Stadium, the Aquatics Centre, the Velodrome, the Basketball Arena and many more. With the Orbit Observation Tower, Britain s largest piece of public art, dominating the skyline, the Park will provide a lasting legacy long after the London 2012 Olympics games. The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, represents one of the largest parks created in Europe for over 150 years, and creates a peaceful green haven both for the people and wildlife living in and around the city of London. Key facts 9.3 billion construction programme 30,000 workers on site at the height of the construction phase Over 30 new bridges constructed to span rivers and railways 80,000 capacity Olympic Stadium 6,000 capacity Velodrome with separate BMX park 17,500 capacity Aquatics Centre with 3 swimming pools Athletes Village big enough to accommodate 17,000 athletes and officials International Broadcast Centre big enough to house 5 jumbo jets wing-to-wing. 8 8 Aggregate Industries and the Olympics Throughout the tender and construction process, Aggregate Industries proved again and again just why we were the perfect supply chain partner to deliver value in construction materials and services to the London 2012 Olympics. Olympic project requirements The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is the public body given the responsibility for the development and construction of the venues and infrastructure for the London 2012 Olympics. Given the vast scale of the Olympic Park project, not surprisingly the ODA quickly identified that aggregates and ready-mixed concrete would constitute an area of major importance. As such, there were strict requirements placed on all those companies looking to secure the role of supplier on the project, with a number of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) stipulated as part of the tender process. In particular, the ODA was looking for any tendering supplier to focus on sustainable solutions as part of its Sustainable Development Strategy, both in terms of the products provided and the methods utilised for their transportation. The minimum requirements were: 50% of raw materials (by weight) to be transported to site by rail or water Aggregate Industries solutions Right from the very outset, we made a commitment to exceed the minimum requirements laid down by the ODA. Instead of transporting 50% of raw materials by rail or water, we promised to deliver over 90% using these methods. The ODA specified that 25% of all materials by weight used on the Olympic Park venues and infrastructure should be recycled or secondary products. We were not content with merely meeting this target, but wanted to exceed it. We have supported the ODA and the Olympic Park contractors in a number of ways to achieve this challenging objective. From sourcing materials to fit their requirements, to delivering on their expectations, we were able to offer solutions that no other supplier could. Going beyond simply supplying of products and services, we also included the provision of a dedicated project manager, who was based onsite, making our offer particularly unique and especially compelling. 25% of materials (by weight) to be recycled 20% of materials (by value) to be recycled Further key targets were also set out in terms of carbon, water, waste and biodiversity.
9 What made our offer unique? Our strength as a supplier to the London 2012 Olympics lies in our ability to offer sustainable materials, delivered by sustainable methods of transport. We were able to demonstrate this through our ability to calculate and report the embodied energy of our materials and logistics. The fact that we had already developed a bespoke system to calculate the carbon footprint of our products, at both the point of design and delivery, meant we were able to offer assurances on the environmental impacts of our products. The transportation of our products to site by rail had a significant effect on the carbon footprint of our aggregate materials. For instance, the carbon footprint of our secondary aggregate was reduced by 73% as a result of utilising rail transport, compared to the equivalent road journey. Put simply, we had the unique solution for this unique project.

Material solutions: Aggregates Technical helpline XXXXX XXXXXX 11 As one of the leading producers of aggregates in the UK, we have played a major role in many prestigious projects including the new Wembley Stadium, Terminal 5 at Heathrow and the redevelopment of the grandstand at Ascot racecourse. This proven track record and varied experience meant we were more than ready for the enormous demands placed on our capability, expertise and resource by the London 2012 Olympics. Our aggregates tender was prepared The secondary and recycled materials We have delivered over 2.5 million and delivered in were mostly delivered to the Olympic tonnes of aggregate to the Olympic Park by rail and offered as an alternative Park construction site. To meet the ODA requirements we to primary aggregate materials. identified and selected a range of secondary and recycled aggregate fill and single sized materials for inclusion in the supply frameworks. These materials complemented our primary products, and included: secondary aggregates arising from the production of China Clay, recycled rail ballast, recycled construction and demolition waste and glass sand manufactured from recycled bottles. Strength in numbers Over 2.5 million tonnes of aggregate materials. Strength in sustainability Secondary aggregates Recycled rail ballast Sand manufactured from recycled bottles Delivered over 2 million tonnes of aggregate materials by rail.
12 Material solutions: Asphalt and hard landscaping With a proven pedigree in the supply of commercial hard landscaping materials to a vast and varied range of environments, we were ideally equipped to meet the many complex challenges presented by the Olympic Park. Between 2007 and 2008, Aggregate Industries was involved in early discussions with the Olympic Park project s architects and designers, as well as with London Borough of Newham regarding Stratford High Street. In 2009, we developed a bespoke Ultrapave flag paving design for the Stratford regeneration scheme and secured the contract to supply flags and kerbs to the International Broadcast and Press Centres. In addition, our Charcon hard landsaping range was also specified to the Sailing Centre in Weymouth. We also supplied and laid 281,000 tonnes of asphalt surfacing materials to the Olympic Park including products with high recycled content. Strength in numbers Over 12,200m 2 of precast concrete paving supplied to the Broadcasting and Press Centres 25,000m 2 of Stratford Ultrapave paving for regeneration scheme 14,070m 2 of Stratford Ultrapave paving for East Ham regeneration 7,300 linear metres of kerb supplied in total 451,000 tonnes of asphalt surfacing products supplied.
Material solutions: Precast concrete solutions 13 As one of the UK s leading suppliers, we have the capability to design and supply a wide range of precast concrete solutions, and have brought innovation, quality and performance to many high profile construction projects. In 2007, our precast concrete specialists entered into early consultation with design engineers and contractors on the Olympic Park and Stratford schemes. By 2008, we had supplied precast service protection units on the Olympic Park and, a year later, following extensive collaboration with architects and engineers, secured the contract to supply over 1,500 precast concrete terracing units, stairs and landings to the Velodrome. Also in 2009, we supplied parapet units and barriers to the Athletes Village, plus coping and tactiles to Stratford Station. To date, we have supplied precast concrete products to the value of almost 2 million. Strength in numbers Over 1,500 bespoke precast concrete units supplied to the Velodrome Other products supplied include service protection, platform copings and tactiles.
14 Logistic solutions: Delivery by rail and water The ODA specified that 50% of all materials used in the construction of the Olympic Park should be brought on site by sustainable transport methods, such as by rail or water. We exceeded this target by using our extensive transportation networks. We were able to surpass the 50% sustainable logistics target with ease. At the height of construction, up to 24 trains per week were delivering aggregate products to the Olympic Park, each carrying 1,200 tonnes. Waste was transported using a special barge that, at the height of the project, was shipping up to nine 20ft containers of waste per week to a specialist recycling centre in Rainham, Essex. With products being delivered from all over the UK, to date over 1 million tonnes of aggregate fill materials have been supplied, with an additional 450,000 tonnes delivered for readymixed concrete manufacture. This has saved the equivalent of over 125,000 vehicle movements, drastically reducing carbon emissions in the process. Bennett s Barges, a division within the Aggregate Industries group, supplied another key element of our logistics solution. The division s 350 tonne freight barges were employed to deliver construction materials in and carry waste out of the Olympic Park. Strength in numbers 24 trains per week each delivering 1,200 tonnes of aggregates to the Olympic Park Over 5,000 tonnes of waste taken away from the Olympic Park by barge Delivered over 2 million tonnes of aggregate materials by rail 125,000 road vehicle movements saved.
Our legacy 15 The London 2012 Olympics has made a commitment to leave a lasting legacy. The organisers have pledged to create sporting, economic, cultural, social and environmental benefits, the impacts of which will be felt long after the 2012 games have come and gone. These are encapsulated in a new Legacy Plan published by the Government in For Aggregate Industries, there too will be a lasting legacy of the pivotal role we have played in the London 2012 Olympics project. During the Olympic journey, we have ourselves made enormous advances in our own working practices, overcoming daunting operational challenges with groundbreaking and innovative solutions. Rest assured, we will be taking these new solutions forward and putting what we ve learned to good use in all the many varying aspects of our business.
