1 Year 4 Unit 1 Planning - Examining traditional stories from Asia In this unit students read and analyse traditional stories from Asia. They demonstrate understanding by identifying structural and language features, finding literal and inferred meaning and explaining the message or moral in traditional stories from Asia. For the assessment task, students write a traditional story with a moral or message for a younger audience. WALT We are to. WILF What I m looking for.. WTF Traditional stories: 5 Lessons This week's focus is on reviewing and listening to traditional stories to identify the characteristic features in them. Text structures, such as cohesive devices used (text connectives and referencing pronouns), and direct speech in traditional stories are examined. Guided reading of a traditional story is undertaken. Tuesday Lessons 1-2 Exploring characteristic features of traditional stories characteristic features that meet the purpose and audience in traditional stories. Compare characteristic features in traditional stories that meet their purpose and audience? Read a traditional story, then a contemporary story or picture book and compare using the traditional story structural features guide. Wednesday Lesson 3 Identifying direct speech in a traditional Asian story characters' direct speech and explain how this helps develop characterisation. Write sentences that quote direct speech and explain the effect they have on characterisation? Use The Tiger, the Rabbit and Chung Ho on EWB examine the use of direct speech of the characters and how paragraphing is used in setting out the story. (Remember to do some ANZAC Day eg Simpson and his Donkey) Thursday (ANZAC Day parade) Lesson 4 Examining cohesion in a traditional Asian story text connectives and explain how they link ideas and sequence events. pronouns and explain how they refer to a noun or noun group. Write a sentence to explain how a cohesive device is used in a traditional story? Practice using appropriate pronouns to nouns eg boy to he, him, his Boys to theirs, they, their Time connectives eg after, before, when, then, later etc ANZAC Day

2 Plot and characterisation: 5 Lessons This week's focus is on exploring how authors use plot and characterisation in traditional stories to involve and interest the reader. A new traditional story is read and studied and language features and their effect on the text are examined. Lesson 6 Examining plot and characterisation Understand how authors or storytellers make traditional stories exciting by using techniques such as character development and plot tension. Identify characters' behaviour and actions at pivotal points in a plot? Express a viewpoint about the consequences of the characters' actions and behaviours and how these add to the plot tension? Discussion of how characters are developed throughout the story; excitement and plot tension Lessons 7-8 Reading and analysing a traditional story Understand how to read texts and analyse how authors or storytellers use techniques to involve readers. Understand how to express a viewpoint about characters and plot development. Identify and explain the effect of techniques and language features used by authors in a traditional story? The Proud Son Link the authors techniques to how it evokes the emotions of the reader as in lesson 9 Discuss point of view of author to readers and how they may differ to lead to a comment on the characters and plot. Lesson 9 Examining character development Understand how storytellers make us care about the decisions and consequences of characters Write a paragraph to explain how storytellers make us care about the decisions and consequences of characters? Lesson 10 extend Consolidate/extend understanding of: characteristic features of traditional stories how to use comprehension strategies to expand content knowledge and integrate and link ideas in traditional stories from Asia how authors and storytellers use techniques to involve readers in character development and plot tension how authors and storytellers enrich language through the use of nouns and noun groups, verbs and verb groups, prepositional phrases and adverbs and adverb groups.

3 Reading comprehension: 5 Lessons This week's focus is on monitoring reading comprehension. Over two days, students read a new story and answer questions in writing. Feedback is given and students analyse their answers and use of comprehension strategies. The assessment task and the Guide to making judgments are examined against the traditional story used in the monitoring task. The use of structural and language features in the story are examined with the Guide to making judgments. Understand the audience and the purpose of the assessment task. and analyse text structures and language features and relate these to the standards on a Guide to making judgments for the assessment task. Answer questions accurately by using literal and implied meaning to link ideas, analyse language features and text structures and evaluate a traditional Asian story? Share viewpoints and responses to comprehension questions and listen to different responses from peers? Write feedback about the use of comprehension strategies in comprehension task? Write sentences to explain why identified text structures or language features were used by the author/storyteller in a traditional Asian story? Structural and language features are added to the outline to enrich the texts. Students generate ideas for writing a traditional story. Model / Shared Joint Construction Lesson 18 Adding structural and Language features to Events Lesson 19 Thinking of ideas for a Traditional story Understand how to develop events by adding structural and language features to a basic text. Understand how to generate ideas for writing a traditional story by developing key information and supporting details about storyline, characters, setting and surrounding circumstances.
