1 Funding for this program has been provided through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement Selkirk College Employment Skills Access Program Advanced Computer Training Funding for Advanced Computer Training is provided through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement and is intended to assist individuals obtain the skills necessary for employment. Preface: This booklet is intended as a program content overview for Employment Skills Access Program, specifically Advanced Computer Training. 1. Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must meet all Employment Skills Access Program eligibility criteria including: Unemployed, non-ei clients; or Employed, low-skilled individuals legally entitled to work in Canada living in BC not be a student enrolled in high school or post-secondary education not currently participating in another Labour Market Agreement funded program 2. Entrance Requirements for Enrolment: Must meet the eligibility screening criteria Must have Level 1 computer aptitude Word, Excel. Applicants will be tested on the first day of training to determine Level 1 competency. Page 1
2 3. Student Responsibilities: The training is offered at four Selkirk College Campuses as follows: Program Name Location Start Date Completion Date Advanced Computer Skills Kaslo, B.C. May June 21, 2013 (TBC) Advanced Computer Skills Grand Forks, BC May 21, 2013 June 21, 2013 Advanced Computer Skills Nelson, BC May 21, 2013 June 21, 2013 The training schedule will vary for each campus. In order for students to fully benefit from the training regular attendance is required, and if a student is absent from class, it is the student s responsibility to talk with the instructor to obtain the course work that was missed and make arrangements to catch up. Students can expect homework, and if a student requires extra help with some of the courses, it is the student s responsibility to follow this up with the instructor. 4. Advanced Computer Training Program Summary Successful completion of the Advanced Computer Training Program results in a Certificate of Completion as well as certification for World Host, Occupational First Aid Level 1 and WHMIS. The program is directed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to enter or re-enter the workforce. 5. Course Description a. Employment Success Foundation (30 hrs) This introductory week sets the foundation for successful job search efforts at the training program conclusion. This course will: examine the impact of change and transition, providing tangible tools/processes to navigate through the shift making the most of opportunities; present greater understanding of self and others for the purpose of growth and clarity around career direction; categorize student s competencies, reflecting on their accomplishments and identify in their cover letter and resume what they bring to a position; discuss and prepare students for the interview process. b. Microsoft Office Review and Assessment (6 hrs) Review MS Office programs for ability and identification of areas of strength and weakness. Develop working plan with student to build on current skills and fill in knowledge gaps. Page 2

Microsoft Office Word Level 2 (30 hrs) Develop the skills to use the advanced features of Word, including formatting with styles and themes, page headers and footers, and merging documents/databases. MS Office Word Level 1 familiarity required. d. Microsoft Office Excel - Level 2 (30 hrs) Develop the skills to use the autofill handle, create ranges of cells and sort lists, create a web page from a worksheet, change cell size and alignment, and use function analysis. Learn to work with advanced formatting and formulas, page headers and footers, repeating columns and rows, charts and themes. MS Office Excel Level 1 familiarity required. e. Microsoft Office Powerpoint Level 1 (12 hrs) Develop the skills to work with text, illustrations, smart art, shapes and tables. Learn to incorporate slide master and add animations. MS Office familiarity required. f. Microsoft Office Access Level 1 (12 hrs) Develop the skills to understand and work with a database program. Learn the basics of databases, tables, and forms. Explore the design and management of a database using prebuilt templates, application parts and Office themes.ms Office familiarity required. g. Occupational First Aid Level 1 (8 hrs) Eight-hour WCB course, includes CPR and helps you deal with major emergencies until medical aid arrives. Participants must have the physical ability to perform first aid skills as required. Three-year WCB certificate upon successful completion. Assessment: As per certification requirements h. Worldhost (7 hrs) A one-day course teaching front-line employees the skills and techniques needed for worldclass service professionalism. Objectives in the Fundamentals workshop include: Understand the importance of excellent customer service; learn how to communicate more effectively and efficiently with customers; learn how to demonstrate attentiveness to customer needs; Understand the social and economic contribution of a healthy tourism industry. WHIMS (4 hrs)) This course informs you of your right to know what hazardous products you are dealing with, what the hazards are, how to read labels, how to make in-house labels and where to find information on treatment if an accident were to occur. Assessment: As per certification requirements 6. Credentials: Advanced Computer Skills Certificate of Completion World Host certificate Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate WHMIS certificate 7. College Supports a. Counselling Services The counsellors at Selkirk College are professionals trained to provide a variety of counselling services. Appointments and short drop-in sessions are available at all campuses. All services are free and confidential. Students may opt to see a counsellor for a variety of concerns regarding career and educational planning, and personal issues. The counsellor's role is to assist students to gather information, make plans and decisions, put plans and decisions into action, generate options, cope with crisis, and understand themselves and others. Short-term personal counselling is available for students at all main campuses. When appropriate, referrals are made to community agencies and services. Students in crisis or emergency situations are encouraged to contact counselling services for assistance. b. How to See a Counsellor Counsellors are located in the Student Services/Administration areas on all main campuses, and are normally available phone or the campus where you would like to see a counsellor to make an appointment. Counsellors also make regular visits to the Selkirk College Centres. Phone your nearest Centre for more information. Learning Success Centre For those students needing extra support The term 'study skills' refers to a huge array of personality traits, attitudes, thinking processes, and behaviours --all of which are related to how a person approaches a learning task. The Learning Success Centre staff provides handouts, workshops, and one-on-one help in the many areas related to academic performance. One-on-one tutoring and workshops focus on effective learning and study skills and include topics such as time management, note-taking, academic reading, exam preparation etc. d. Disability Services Contacts It is recommended that prospective students contact a Coordinator well before their program start-date to begin planning appropriate accommodations. Disability Service Coordinators offer support on all campuses. There is no charge for any of the services provided by Disability Services.
