2 COMPETITION ANNOUNCEMENT On the occasion of the 1 st edition of the University Festival "Archimedes Message, that will be held in Siracusa from 5 th to 14 th September 2011, a competition is open to students of domestic and foreign Faculties of Architecture and to students of Scienze dei Beni Culturali and Tecnologie applicate alla conservazione e al restauro dei Beni Culturali of Siracusa. The competition is divided into three sections: Art, Science and Technology. ACTIVITIES Students, under tutors supervision, can enter the competition submitting their own works - film, video, multimedia projects, graphics and scale prototypes - inspired by the knowledge of the territory, with the aim to transmit its history and its possibilities of development and also translate its features into images. Each section of the competition will be introduced by a conference on specific topic, with qualified experts in that field. Moreover, during the meeting there will be design workshops whose outcomes will be exposed on the last day of the Festival. GENERAL OBJECTIVES The event aims to incline students towards those values related to the environment, social issues, culture and traditions, through the contribution of visual arts and figurative language, identifying a methodological model to express ideas and give support to creativity and potentiality of production. The involvement of foreign universities aims to encourage international cultural exchange, providing participants with an opportunity to compare their knowledge and technical application skills. These objectives are aimed to: Stimulate creativity and intercultural dialogue within Faculties of Architecture. Promote student participation in transnational exchanges within EU and third countries with the aim to increase the understanding of cultural diversity. Encourage students willingness to take the initiative, entrepreneurial activity and creativity in order to enable them to actively integrate into professional world. Support cultural cooperation in fields of mutual interest, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and teaching methodologies and also the development of innovation at international level.

3 CONTENT, TIMES AND CONDITIONS (for further information please read the enclosed regulation) To join the competition, Faculties are required to send their application (A attached) by 31 st March 2011; Works, complete with detailed report, must be sent by 31 st May 2011; The Competition Committee, checked entry requirements, will send a communication of admission to each Faculty. On the basis of the output as well as the thematic pertinence of the work, there will be an award giving ceremony during the Festival, from 5 th to 14 th September 2011, at the Faculty of Architecture of Siracusa. PRIZES Prizes will be assigned in each of the three sections of the competition (Art, Technology and Science). They consist of: 1st prize: Round trip and stay for the duration of the meeting in the province of Siracusa (Maximum 5 persons). 2nd prize: One-way trip and stay for the duration of the meeting in the province of Siracusa (Maximum 5 persons). 3rd prize: Stay for the duration of the meeting in the province of Siracusa (Maximum 5 persons). Prize winners will also receive an award plaque with the prestigious symbol of the International Meeting, a portrait of Archimedes: 1 - UFA Plaque (University Festival of Art) 2 - UFT Plaque (Festival University of Technology) 3 - UFS Plaque (University Festival of Science) Works submitted by students of the Faculty of Architecture of Siracusa and Scienze dei Beni Culturali and Tecnologie applicate alla conservazione e al restauro dei Beni Culturali of Siracusa will be selected separately. Winners, in addition to the plaques, will receive the following scholarships: 1st prize: nd prize: 750 3rd prize: 500 The Jury has the right to assign additional special prizes on the basis of the output as well as the thematic pertinence of the work. Students participating in the competition will receive a certificate for ECTS assignment, to be subject to the approval of each faculty.

4 REGULATION Faculties participating to the competition must comply with the regulation attached to this announcement, complete the application form (A attached) and send their works to the following address: Villa Reimann via Necropoli Grotticelle, Siracusa. Works sent will not be returned. Jury s decisions will be unappellable. 5 REGULATION Art.1 The Meeting, that will be held in Siracusa on the occasion of the 1 st edition of the International University Festival of Art, Science and Technology, is intended to represent an occasion to develop and promote the connection between the creative and the design phases in the fields of art, technology and science, through conventions, conferences, cultural exchanges and workshops. Art.2 Italian and foreign Faculties of Architecture, and Scienze dei Beni Culturali and Tecnologie applicate alla conservazione e al restauro dei Beni Culturali Faculties of Siracusa, can enter the competition submitting film, video, multimedia projects, graphics and scale prototypes made by students. The meeting is divided into three sections: A-Art B-Technology C-Science Each Faculty may participate with more than one project. Art.3 Submitted works must be inspired by the following topics: The knowledge of the territory, with the purpose to transmit its history and its possibilities of development, and translate its features into images. The ability to narrate- show- represent places as archetypal symbols of historic and artistic heritage. The development of the ability to decipher and represent stimula coming from territory and environment. Art.4 Faculties participating to the competition must sent the application form (A attached) to the address info@siracusauniversityfestival.com, within 31 st March 2011.

6 Art.5 The application form must be filled out including, penalty of exclusion, the following information: 1 - Country; 2 - Faculty; 3 - Members of the Working Group; 4 - Section of competition; 5 -Description of the project in order to better understand the research path that led to the formulation and development of the work and its most important features. Art. 6 Works must be submitted in electronic form by 31 st May 2011 to the following address: Consorzio Universitario Archimede, Villa Reimann via Necropoli Grotticelle, Siracusa. Works submitted must be completed with a detailed report of the project and participating working group s data. The proposals may be written in Italian or English. Date as postmark. Art.7 The following types of projects are admitted to the competition: - Graphic design in pdf format (plans, elevations, sections, axonometric, perspective, render 3D) size A2 - Video and multimedia CD (maximum 30 minutes) - Scale prototypes 1:20, 1:10, 1:5 (for this type of project is recommended to provide photographic and explicative documentation to ensure the accurate assessment of the project by the jury). Article 8 Admission to the competition and calendar of activities will be announced once that the Competition Committee will have verified that works meet entry requirements. The participation to workshops and conferences is open and subject to registration through a special form available on the site. On the website will be also available a directory of accommodation providing, at discounted prices, for hospitality during the event.

7 Article 9 All works submitted that meet these regulations will be examined by a jury of experts. The Competition Committee will give notice to the winners, which must confirm their participation at the Meeting in writing and send, if requested, the original work within 15 days from the date of the notification. Article 10 The jury is made up of two professors of Architecture, one manager of the Consorzio Archimede and two experts of the professional world related to the sections of the competition. The selection of eligible works for the competition will be made by the Competition Committee.
