2 SPLENDORS OF SICILY Naples to Valletta Aboard Sea Cloud II October 14 to 23, 2016 Cathedral of Monreale CIRCUMNAVIGATE SICILY, STEPPING STONE BETWEEN EUROPE AND AFRICA, ON AN EIGHT-NIGHT CRUISE ABOARD THE ELEGANT SEA CLOUD II. From Naples, set sail for Lipari, largest of the Aeolian Islands and continuously inhabited since Neolithic times. Dock in Palermo to view the gleaming mosaics of the Palatine Chapel in the Palace of the Norman Kings and enjoy a private tour of the Regional Gallery. Explore Segesta s Greek temple and still-used theater, and visit either medieval Erice or ancient Mazara del Vallo, founded by the Phoenicians. 3 HARVARD STUDY LEADER WILLIAM GRANARA is Professor of the Practice of Arabic on the Gordon Gray Endowment at Harvard University where he teaches Arabic language and literature and directs the Arabic language program. He is also the director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and founding director of the Harvard Summer School program Mediterranean Crossings: France and the Arab World in Aix-en-Provence, France. Granara studied French and Arabic at Georgetown University and received his PhD in Arabic and Islamic studies from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the former executive director of the Center for Arabic Study at the American University in Cairo and the former director of the Arabic Field School of the U.S. Department of State in Tunis, Tunisia. He has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Granara specializes in the history and culture of Muslim Sicily. He has written on cross-cultural encounters between Islam and Christendom throughout the Middle Ages, as well as the poetry of Ibn Hamdis, Sicily s most celebrated Arab poet. His study of Ibn Hamdis and the Poetics of Exile was published in the 1998 issue of Edebiyaat. In addition, he lectures and writes on contemporary Arabic literature and has published translations of Egyptian and North African fiction. His translation into English of the Algerian Arabic novel, The Earthquake, was published in March, Gramara s work on literary criticism focuses on postcolonialism and cross cultural poetics. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15 NAPLES, ITALY / SEA CLOUD II Upon arrival in Naples, transfer to the awaiting Sea Cloud II. As your journey begins, enjoy a bon voyage toast on deck, followed by dinner. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16 DAY AT SEA Today experience the thrill of sailing aboard the legendary Sea Cloud II. As she carries you through the gentle waters under a set of billowing sails, the day is yours to enjoy the grace and romance of a bygone era of travel. Attend afternoon lectures and join the captain for cocktails followed by the welcome dinner. MONDAY, OCTOBER 17 LIPARI (AEOLIAN ISLANDS), ITALY Early this morning sail through the Aeolian archipelago, volcanic islands off the north coast of Sicily. Tender ashore to Lipari, which has known uninterrupted occupation since the Neolithic Age. The Archaeological Museum within the fortress walls has a superb collection of artifacts, including extraordinary masks from this and nearby islands. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18 PALERMO (SICILY), ITALY Dock in Palermo, the capital of Sicily, for a morning visit to the 12th-century Palatine Chapel in the Palace of the Norman Kings. Described by Guy de Maupassant as the most surprising religious jewel ever dreamt of, the chapel is known for its extraordinary golden mosaics. Then visit the Regional Gallery when it is closed to the public. After lunch on board, drive to Monreale to discover the magnificent Norman cathedral, whose brilliantly colored mosaics depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments. 5 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19 TRAPANI (SICILY), ITALY Arrive at the port of Trapani and depart on a morning excursion to Segesta to view its splendid Greek temple and theater. Following lunch on board, you may wish to drive to the medieval hilltop town of Erice. Alternatively, travel to the village of Mazara del Vallo to see its spectacular seven-foot bronze statue, retrieved from the sea by local fishermen. With his flying hair and goat ears, the 2,400-yearold figure was quickly dubbed the Dancing Satyr. In the early evening, Sea Cloud II sails along the northern coast of Sicily. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20 PORTO EMPEDOCLE (SICILY), ITALY Enjoy a relaxing morning on board. After lunch, arrive in Porto Empedocle and drive to Agrigento, which Pindar called the most beautiful city built by mortal men. Tour the Valley of the Temples, with some of the finest Greek ruins in the world. Return to the ship and set sail for Syracuse. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21 SYRACUSE (SICILY), ITALY Today explore Syracuse, one of the most important cities in antiquity. Discover the dramatic, well-preserved Greek and Roman theaters of the Archeological Zone. On Syracuse s beautiful Ortygia Island, see the cathedral built on the ruins of the Temple of Athena as well as Caravaggio s prized painting, The Burial of St. Lucy, in the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia. Continue to the lovely town of Noto, set amid olive groves and almond trees on a plateau overlooking the Asinaro Valley. A walking tour will introduce you to the town s baroque treasures. Return to Syracuse in the late afternoon. Early this evening, enjoy the captain s farewell dinner as Sea Cloud II sets sail for Malta. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23 VALLETTA, MALTA / U.S. Disembark Sea Cloud II in Malta this morning and transfer to the airport for flights to the U.S. Port of Malta OPTIONAL MALTA POSTLUDE October 23 to 25, 2016 Spend two nights in Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and visit the medieval city of Mdina, Malta s old capital. In quaint Rabat, explore St. Paul s Catacombs, the earliest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta, and the Domus Romana, a first-century BC Roman house with exquisite mosaics. Discover the Neolithic Temple of Hagar Qim, one of the oldest freestanding temples in the world. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. HEALTH ADVISORY This is an active program that involves extensive walking. Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time of your reservation. Please note: Sea Cloud II does not have an elevator.
