1 There are several terms that we will use to describe your spreadsheet: Workbook, worksheet, row, column, cell, cursor, name box, formula bar. Today you are going to create a spreadsheet to investigate properties of proportional relationships using tables, graphs, and equations. You have completed several activities in class to analyze and predict the values of certain terms. You will need your data sheets to complete this spreadsheet activity. 1. Open Microsoft Excel. 2. Click View on the menu bar. 3. Click Header and Footer 4. Click Custom Header 1

2 5. In the Left Section type your First & Last Names then press the Tab key. 6. In the Middle Section type the title ; then press the Tab key. In the Right Section type your Teacher s name, press Enter and type your class period. Click OK to close the Header box. 7. Click OK again to close the Page Setup box. 8. Click File on the menu bar. 9. Select Save As and save your spreadsheet in your teacher s folder on the server. Use this format to name your file: Teacher last name Class period---your Last name First name. Example: Smith-4-Doe-John 9.a. Click on the Save in field down arrow and select Students on Cms_fs1\Sys\ 2

3 9.b. Open the folder called Students. 9.c. Open your teacher s folder. 9.d. Type the file name in the File name field. Then click the Save button. Example: Smith-4-Doe-John 9.e. Click the Save button. 3

4 Create the data table 10. In cell A1 type Term Number. 11. In cell B1 type Visual Form. 12. In cell C1 type Written Description. 13. In cell D1 type Process Column. 14. In cell E1 type Numerical Value of Term. 15. Select cells A1 through E1. Click-and-drag through the cells with the white shaped cursor. 16. Click the Bold button. 17. Select Columns A through E. Click-and-drag through the column indices with the white shaped cursor. 18. From the menu bar select Format Column AutoFit Selection. 19. In cell A2 type (# of cubes). 20. In cell E2 type (# of faces to paint). 21. Select cells A2 AND E2. Hold down the Control Key to select non-contiguous cells. 22. Click the Center button. 4

5 23. Select cells A1 through E Click Format on the menu bar and select Cells. 25. Click the Border tab. 26. Click the Outline AND Inside buttons. Then click OK. 27. Click Format on the menu bar and select Cells. 28. Click the Number tab. 29. Select General. This step ensures that the cells do not have a previously-set data type that would alter Excel s processing of any entered text, number, or formula. 5

6 30. Click the Alignment tab. 31. Select Center for BOTH the Horizontal AND Vertical menus. 32. Check the Wrap Text box. 33. Click OK. 34. SAVE your work. Enter data in the table 35. Type 1 in cell A Press Enter. 37. Continue entering the term numbers in cells A4 through A10, pressing Enter after each entry. 38. SAVE your work. 6

7 39. To open the file 8thGradeExcelGraphics from the Students folder on the file server, click File Open and then continue along the path Students on Cms_fs1\Sys \ 8 th GradeExcelGraphics. 39.a. 39.b. 39.c. 8thGradeExcelGraphics opened in Excel under Smith-4-Doe-John. 7

8 40. Right-click on the Graphics sheet tab of 8thGradeExcelGraphics. 41. Select Move or Copy. 42. Select your spreadsheet from the To book: menu. 43. Check Create a copy. 44. Click OK. 45. Click the Graphics sheet tab in YOUR File. 46. Select the single cube graphic by clicking on it. 47. Click Edit on the menu bar; then select Copy. 48. Click the Sheet 1 tab, which will restore your spreadsheet to view. 49. Click in cell B3. 8

9 50. Click Edit on the menu bar; then select Paste. 51. Right-click the graphic, and select Format AutoShape. 52. Click the Properties tab. 53. Select Move but don t size with cells. 54. Then click OK. 55. Position the cursor between the row indices for Rows 3 AND 4 so that it changes to the shape shown in the picture. 9

10 56. Then click-and-drag to enlarge the row height enough to contain the single cube graphic. 57. If needed, use the same action on Column B to create enough space for the graphic. 58. Click-and-drag the graphic into the center of the cell. 59. Continue placing the proper graphics and adjusting the cell sizes until enough have been entered to illustrate the problem. 60. SAVE your work. 61. Click in cell C Type A 1 cube-high tower has 5 faces to paint. 63. Press Enter. 64. Click in cell C To autofill, click-and-drag cells C3 THROUGH C10 (with the black + shaped cursor). 66. Correct the written description for each cell to match your data sheet. 10

11 67. In cell D3 type the mathematical formula 1 x To autofill, click-and-drag cells D3 through D10 (with the black + shaped cursor). 69. Correct the process formula for each cell to match your data sheet. 70. Click in cell E Click the = next to the Formula bar. 72. Continue typing the Excel formula that corresponds to the process formula: =4*A3+1. Note that there are NO SPACES in the Excel formula. 73. Press Enter. 74. To autofill, click-and-drag cells E3 through E9 (with the black + shaped cursor). 75. In cell E10 type: =4*A10+1 and press Enter. The single quotation mark signals Excel to display the text rather than calculate and show the formula result. 76. SAVE your completed spreadsheet to the server. 11

12 Making a graph 77. Select cells A3 THROUGH A7 AND cells E3 THROUGH E7. Hold down the Control key to select both blocks of cells. 78. Click the Chart Wizard button on the Standard tool bar. (Alternate: Select Insert Chart from the menu bar). Chart Wizard Step Select XY (Scatter) from the Chart Wizard box. 80. Select Chart sub-type: Scatter (without lines). 81. Click Next. Chart Wizard Step Verify Data range: =Sheet1!$A$3:$A$7,Sheet1!$E3:$E7 83. Select Series in: Columns. 84. Click Next. 12

13 Chart Wizard Step Click the Titles tab. 86. In Chart title type. 87. In Value (X) axis type Term Number. 88. In Value (Y) axis type Numerical Value of Term. 89. Click the Axes tab. 90. Check Value (X) axis. 91. Check Value (Y) axis. 92. Click the Gridlines tab. 93. Check ONLY Major gridlines for the X axis. 94. Check ONLY Major gridlines for the Y axis. 13

14 95. Click on the Legend tab. 96. Uncheck Show legend. 97. Click on the Data Labels tab. 98. Select None. 99. Click on Next. Chart Wizard Step Select As object in (Sheet1) Click on Finish SAVE your work. 14

From the menu bar click Chart Add Trendline Click the Type tab Select Linear Click the Options tab Check Display equation on chart Click OK SAVE your work Right-click on the Trendline Select Format Trendline Click on the Patterns tab Select Custom Select a Style (continuous line) Select a Color (other than black) Select a Weight (the thinnest). 15

16 117. Click OK. Chart Area 118. Position the cursor inside a corner of the Chart Area so that the title box appears: 119. Then click-and-drag to move the graph below your data table Finally click in an empty cell to deselect the graph SAVE your completed spreadsheet. 16
