1 Recreatinal Sprts Flr Hckey Rules Mdificatins have been made t suit BYU-Idah Recreatinal Sprts prgrams. Rule 1: Players All teams will cnsist f five (5) players n the flr (including the galie) and may start with a minimum f three (3) players. The maximum number f players allwed n each team shall be nine (9) with at least ne (1) player f each gender. One player f each gender is required t be n the curt at all times. All players must check in using a valid pht ID. If during a game a team has fewer than three (3) eligible players due t ejectin, the game shall be terminated. If during a game a team has fewer than three (3) eligible players due t injury, the game may cntinue at the Recreatinal Sprts Staff s discretin. Free substitutin is permitted withut stppage f play. Hwever, the player entering the game during live actin must nt gain an advantage r becme part f the play prir t the player leaving the game. If a team wishes t pull their galie, the galie must g t the bench and btain a regular hckey stick. Either that player r a substitute will re-enter the game withut gaining an advantage in the play ccurring n the flr. Rule 2: Play The game will cnsist f tw (2) perids f twenty (20) minutes each. The game time is running time. There will be a five (5) minute break between perids. Each team will be permitted t have tw (2) timeuts per game. The length f each timeut shall be ne (1) minute. The running clck will stp during timeuts. The team wh calls the timeut must be in pssessin f the puck. The clck will stp in the last tw minutes f the game when a gal is scred t reset the puck. The clck will als stp if the puck ges t ther curts t retrieve the puck. Clck will restart when play cntinues. When a team is winning by five (5) r mre gals, with tw minutes left n the game clck, the game will end by mercy rule. Regular seasn games can end in a tie. N vertime perid will be played. During the playffs, games tied at the end f regulatin will enter a three-minute sudden-victry vertime perid. If additinal vertime perids are needed, a 1-minute intermissin will be bserved between vertime perids. Teams d nt receive additinal timeuts fr the vertime perid. Face-ffs: A face-ff will be utilized t begin each perid and t resume play after any stppages. All face-ffs shall ccur at designated lcatins. At the beginning f each perid, and fllwing scres and penalties, the face-ff shall be at center curt. During a face-ff there shall be NO mvement until the puck has been drpped. All players must be n their defensive side f the flr during face-ffs. An imaginary line that bisects the face-ff area determines the defensive side. The blades f the players facing ff must be perpendicular t the line bisecting the face-ff area. Disallwed Gals: Gals will nt be cunted if the stick is held and/r brught abve waist level. Gals will nt be cunted if the puck is intentinally kicked int the gal. Gals will nt be cunted if the puck is batted int the gal with the hand. Gals will nt be cunted if a player frm the ffensive team is in the gal crease.

2 Penalties Recreatinal Sprts Flr Hckey Rules Crease Rule: At n time is a player f the ffensive team permitted t enter the galie's crease with any prtin f the bdy. If a gal is scred while the player is illegally in the crease, it shall be disallwed. A face-ff ccurring at the nearest face-ff area will resume play. Hwever, if the fficial determines that the galie was interfered with, an interference penalty will be assessed. An ffensive player's stick is nt allwed t enter the crease at any time. If an ffensive player places the stick in the crease area, they will be penalized fr interference. This includes breaking the plane f the crease with the fllw thrugh f a sht. If this ccurs, the gal will nt be permitted. If the fficial determines that the galie was interfered with, an interference penalty will be assessed. Galies are permitted t leave the crease area t establish a better angle f defense r t play the puck. Hwever, the galie may nt leave the crease fr purpses f freezing the puck utside the crease area. The player will prmptly be penalized fr delay f game. Hlding the Stick: The carrying f a stick abve the nrmal standing height f the waist is prhibited and a minr penalty will be assessed. This includes the prcess f a sht, including the fllw thrugh, and the gal will be disallwed. Hand Passes: If a player clses his hand n the puck, play will be stpped and puck will be awarded t the ppsing team at the nearest free sht lcatin. Players may bat the puck straight dwn with their hand, but such actin may nt result in the puck being directed twards a teammate. Kicking the Puck: Players may stp the puck with their feet, but may nt use their feet t guide the puck t a teammate. A vilatin results in the puck being awarded t the ppsing team at the nearest free sht lcatin. Running fuls (withut penalty minutes) including high sticking, hand passing, kicking the puck, player/stick in the gal crease, and dangerus play r sliding by any players and galie freezing the puck utside f the crease area. Delay f Game (Minr Penalty) Delay f game shall be called if any player falls n the puck. A Minr Penalty shall be assessed n the player ther than a galkeeper wh deliberately fall n r gathers a puck int his/her bdy. Any player wh drps t his/her knees t blck shts shuld nt be penalized if the puck is sht under them r becmes ldged in their clthing r equipment. Any use f the hand t make the puck unplayable will be penalized prmptly. Shall be called n a galkeeper wh (when his/her bdy is entirely utside the bundaries f his/her wn crease line) deliberately falls n r gathers the puck int his/her bdy, which is nt a sht n the gal. Shall be called n any players, including galkeeper wh delays the game by deliberately displacing a gal frm its nrmal psitin. The fficial shall stp play immediately when a gal has been displaced. Shall be called n any player, including the galkeeper, wh hlds r freezes the puck with his/her stick, feet, r bdy alng the wall in such a manner as t cause a stppage f play. Hlding (Minr Penalty) Shall be called n any player wh hlds an ppnent with hands, stick, r in any ther manner.

3 Recreatinal Sprts Flr Hckey Rules Hking (Minr Penalty) Shall be called n any player wh impedes r seeks t impede the prgress f an ppnent by hking with his stick. Interference (Minr Penalty) Shall be called n any player wh interferes with r impeded the prgress n an ppnent wh is nt in the pssessin f the puck. Shall be called n any player wh deliberately kncks a stick ut f an ppnent's hand. Shall be called n any player wh prevents an ppnent frm regaining his/her stick nce it has been drpped. Shall be called n any player wh thrws the stick twards an ppsing player with the puck in a manner that wuld distract said ppnent. A Miscnduct Penalty will als be assessed in this instance. Shall be called n any player wh intentinally fuls frm behind thus preventing a reasnable scring pprtunity. The vilating player shall be autmatically ejected with a designated player frm the flr serving a five-minute Majr Penalty. There are n penalty shts. Elbwing and/r Kneeing (Majr Penalty) Shall be called n any player wh uses his/her elbw r knee in such a manner as t ful an ppnent in any way. Flr Hckey in a Nn-Cntact Activity --- N Intentinal Cntact! Slashing (Majr Penalty) Shall be called n any player wh impedes r seeks t impede the prgress f an ppnent by slashing with the stick. Flagrant slashing will cnstitute a Miscnduct Penalty. Any player wh swings his/her stick at anther player in the curse f any altercatin shall be subject t a game Miscnduct Penalty. Spearing (Majr Penalty) Shall be called n any player wh spears r attempts t spear an ppnent. Spearing shall be defined as stabbing at an ppnent with the pint f the stick blade while the stick is being carried with ne hand r bth hands. Tripping (Majr Penalty) Shall be called n any player wh shall place his/her stick, knee, ft, arm, hand, r elbw in such a manner that it shall cause an ppnent t trip r fall. Butt Ending and Crss Checking (Majr Penalty) Shall be called n any player wh "crss checks r butt-ends" r attempts t "butt-end" an ppnent. NOTE: Attempts t butt end shall include all cases where a "butt end" gesture is made regardless whether bdy cntact is made r nt. Charging (Majr Penalty) Shall be called n any player wh runs r jumps int r charges an ppnent. Rughing (Majr Penalty) Rughing is defined as any type f unnecessary and/r intentinal cntact. Players must play the puck with the stick at all times. Using the bdy t gain an advantage, r playing against an ppnent's bdy and nt the puck, is nt permitted. Penalty Assessment MINOR PENALTY --- Tw (2) Minutes. Fr a minr penalty n any player, ther than the galie, the player shall be ruled ff the flr fr tw (2) minutes during which time n substitute will be

4 Recreatinal Sprts Flr Hckey Rules permitted fr that player. A minr penalty ends when a gal is scred by the ffended team r at the end f tw (2) minutes f served penalty time. In the event f tw (2) r mre players frm the same team serving minr penalties simultaneusly, nce a gal is scred by the ffended team the penalized player wh has served the mst time will have his/her penalty ended. The remaining players will remain in the penalty bx until their time has expired r additinal gals are scred. MAJOR PENALTY --- Five (5) Minutes. Fr a majr penalty n any player, ther than the galie, the player shall be ruled ff the flr fr five (5) minutes during which time n substitute will be permitted fr that player. A majr penalty ends nly at the end f 5 minutes f served penalty time. Gals scred by the ffended team d NOT end a majr penalty. The entire five (5) minutes must be served. Penalty minutes will carry ver int successive perids including vertime. A galie may receive any minr r majr penalty as if he/she were a player n the flr. The team captain shall designate a player currently n the flr when the penalty ccurs t serve the penalty in place f the galie. If the galie receives a Miscnduct Penalty, he/she is ejected frm the game. A new Galie is placed in the game and the team captain shall designated a player currently n the flr (at the time f the penalty) t serve the penalty in place f the galie. A Miscnduct Penalty shall be assessed n any player wh intentinally kncks r shts the puck ut f the reach f an fficial. A Miscnduct Penalty shall be assessed n any player wh deliberately thrws any item r equipment prir, during, r after the game. Said player will be immediately ejected frm participatin in the game. Reinstatement prcedures must be fllwed. A fine may be assessed fr brken r damaged equipment. Play resumes fllwing the assessment f a penalty with the awarding f the puck t the ffended team at the nearest free sht lcatin r a face-ff in the event f fuls against each team. Rule 3: Equipment Hckey sticks will be available fr checkut, as well as galie equipment. Galie equipment cnsists f leg pads, chest prtectr, glves and a helmet. Galies may wear a baseball glve n ne hand; hwever, ne will nt be available fr check ut. Tennis, running, r ther sft-sled shes must be wrn by all players. Rule 4: Playffs Teams must maintain a 3.5 sprtsmanship average and have zer frfeits during the regular seasn t be eligible fr the playffs. Sprtsmanship pints fr each regular seasn cntest will be added tgether and divided by the ttal number f cntests held t find each team s sprtsmanship average.
