7 PURCHASE TIME What is your fair s weight requirements, minimum and maximum? What is your goal for animal fair time, small medium or large? ADG = average daily gain ADG = (W2 W1)/ D W2 = last weight, 82 fair time W1 = fist weight, 38 wean date D = days between weighing, 131 days Example: (82-38)/131 = 0.34 Meaning this goat put on 0.34 pounds of weight per day for 131days, total of 44 pounds of gain General rule from an April weaning to an August Fair is about a.32 ADG, many variables within this general rule.
8 PURCHASE TIME Example to meet a goal of 80 pound fair Fair Aug 15 th, wean time April 10 th, 127 days 127 days X.32 (ADG general rule) = pounds gain 80 (pounds fair weight) (gain) = purchase weight Target purchase weight of 40 pounds. pounds. Again this is a rough idea at a purchase weight to meet a goal of 80
9 FEEDING AND CONDITIONING Fresh water daily, use 2 buckets, switch bucket daily, let 1 dry in the sun while other has water for the goat General rule; feed 3.5% of body weight daily Ex: 50 lb goat X.035 = 1.75 lbs of feed per day(divide it into 2 or 3 feedings a day) Goat show feed % protein 3 4 % Fat 16 % fiber (adequate fiber needs to be in feed since you will use less hay to minimize hay belly) Make sure feed has Ammonium Chloride to prevent Urinary Calculi) What is seller feeding? If making feed changes, do it slowly
10 FEEDING AND CONDITIONING Weigh goat weekly; need to know progress to achieve goal weight and conditioning Bathroom scale; hold goat and weigh then subtract your weight Hanging scale and use calf sling Livestock scale take goat to someone who has scale Figure ADG from weighing to weighing to track growth This ADG will be different then wean weight to fair weight Place feeder high so goat can stand with front legs on block while back feet on ground (helps develop muscles) climbing toy Exercise; bursting speed Handle and walk the animal from day one
11 HEALTH CARE FOR GOAT Weighing animal will help determine if goat is healthy. Normal goat temp. is between 101 and 104 Hoof trimming will be needed. (normally twice) Worming program Consult your seller, vet, or mentor. It may be possible to purchase smaller dosages of wormer from your mentor or seller. ***Watch your drug withdrawals*** Withdrawal is the number of days a drug can NOT be used before sending the animal to market. Observations and concerns Diarrhea (loose stools) This animal needs to be treated immediately. Poor daily gain Anemic gums and eye lids
12 HEALTH CARE FOR GOAT Skin conditions Sore Mouth: Scabs around mouth, this is a contagious diseases to all animals including humans. It is viral and needs to run its course. Lice: Pull hair back and check skin for very tiny bugs. Mites: loss of hair with scabs Ringworm: also causes balding areas. A vet or mentor may need to be consulted to determine diagnosis and treatment. ***Some of these treatments have long withdrawals, which needs to be considered before using. **** For example: Ivermectin pour on has a 48 day withdrawal.
13 HEALTH CARE FOR GOAT Urinary calculi: A blockage in the urinary track preventing the wether from urinating. Also referred to as water belly. Symptoms: Off feed, appears uncomfortable, urine dribble. Developing water belly. Consult your vet or mentor immediately. Prevention: Making sure you are feeding a meat goat feed that has proper calcium to phosphorus ratio of 2:1. Twice as much Calcium as phosphorus. Be cautious of giving the animal snacks or teats that can effect the ratio of Calcium to phosphorus. Use a feed that has Ammonia chloride in the feed. It will be listed in the ingredients. Plentiful fresh water!!!
