Departimento di Ingegneria Biofisica e Elettronica Anna Marina Scapolla ARIADNE Una rete internazionale per promuovere la condivisione e il riuso di esperienze e materiale per la formazione aperta e a distanza

Outline 4 ARIADNE: an European Project and now a Foundation 4 The ARIADNE Infrastucture A knowledge repository Online Courses 4 A Case Study Electronics General Features of the Course The Course Documents Communication Tools 4 Evaluation

The ARIADNE Foundation The ARIADNE Foundation is a non-profit international Association. It maintains and develops the tools and system produced during the European ARIADNE (Alliance of Remote Instructional Authoring & Distribution Networks for Europe) project ( ) The ARIADNE Foundation ensures the non-commercial exploitation of these assets and provides technical and methodological support to its members.

The ARIADNE Foundation Principles and ethical values: 4 Knowledge cannot be considered as a mere market good 4 Training systems cannot be reduced to commercial services 4 Free access to knowledge must be recognized as a fundamental social right, closely bound to the right to Education 4 Cooperation between educational bodies can lead to high-quality and costeffective training processes Technical and Pedagogical Approach 4 Maximum software openness and interoperability, rejection of proprietary pseudo-standards

The ARIADNE Infrastructure The ARIADNE system provides: 4 cataloging and storage of electronic pedagogical items (documents) 4 tools for the exchange of these resources 4 an e-learning platform for users and course management The exchange of pedagogical material rests on a distributed database: the ARIADNE Knowledge Pool System (KPS)

The Knowledge Pool System The Knowledge Pool System consists of more than 20 local nodes in 9 countries. The local sites exchange their contents through a central node, located in Leuven (Belgium). The indexing system allows: 4 to describe documents according to the IEEE/LOM standard 4 to find relevant documents easily 4 to exchange resources.

The ARIADNE Infrastructure.

ARIADNE curricula Concept of a curriculum A curriculum is a spatio-temporal socio-pedagogical process, i.e. instruction organized in space, time and by the nature of activities offered to the learner. The curriculum-based training realizes the formal learning paradigm because learning proceeds in a systematic, pre-defined, organized and guided way.

ARIADNE curricula The process of curriculum creation and course installation Pedagogical Scenario Curriculum Editor Curriculum Description File (reusable and editable) KPS Course installation

ARIADNE at DIBE The Department of Biophysical and Electronic Engineering (DIBE) of the University of Genoa hosts an ODL infrastructure based on the ARIADNE framework: 4 1 node of the KPS 4 1 Primary ALI/AMI server 4 1 ALI/AMI test server Our contribution to the ARIADNE KPS covers: 4 Electronics 4 ICT

Evaluation Students feedback collected by : 4 direct observation and registration of the students in the didactical laboratory, 4 interview with students during the oral examination, 4 questionnaires at the end of the course. Evaluation criteria: 4 the quality of the pedagogical material, 4 the integration of the course elements, 4 the quality of the communication services.

Evaluation Results 4 Examples and exercises relying on simulation are valued excellent 4 Theory presentation must be rendered more tempting and efficient 4 The coordination and integration of the course elements is good 4 Communication services have proved not to be enough active 4 Students participation in the learning process must be encouraged through cooperative projects, comparison and discussions of results 4 A new and high animating role is required to teachers and student assistants

Online Courses Courses on: 4 Analog electronics 4 Digital electronics 4 Biomedical electronics 4 Computer Networks 4 Java Programming Language The design and elaboration of these curricula took advantage of the opportunity of sharing and reusing the contents of the LKP.

ARIADNE Courses List of courses:

Analog Electronics as a Case Study

General Features of the Course Type: Learners: Subject: Student Assessment: Teacher: Academic, mandatory, introductory, based on an existing course. Students of the 3 rd year of the Engineering Curricula (Electronics and Computer Science). Fundamentals of electronic, analysis and design of analog electronic circuits. Intermediate and terminal. Giancarlo Parodi

Course Execution Data Runs: Actors: Sessions: Course Time Span: ODL Platform: 4 (since 1998/99), one course session is running. 1 teacher, 1 student assistant. About 60 learners. 7 sessions corresponding to the main topics of the traditional course. 12 weeks (approx. 50 hours). ARIADNE environment

The Course Documents The course contains 84 documents (all stored in the Genoa LKP) 4 Theory (39) 4 Examples (40) 4 Collection of exercises (5 documents, 45 exercises) Contents are structured according to the schedule of the traditional classroom lectures. Software tools used for content creation : 4 Toolbook 4 Microsim Pspice 4 HTML editors

The Course Documents (2) Theory documents are: 4 lessons (multimedia presentation of topics) a concise text for explanations a large number of figures animations circuit simulations 4 slides with narration

The Course Documents (3) Other documents: 4 examples 4 exercises

Web-oriented Cooperative Work and Communication Tools 4 exchange of messages 4 a course-specific bulletin board 4 videoconference tool

Conversion of a Traditional Course into a Computer-Based One The process requires: 4 Avoiding simplification of the subject or loosing didactic power and completeness; 4 Structuring the contents; 4 Supporting the theory presentations by examples/exercises that compensate the absence of the teacher; 4 Interactive documents for exploratory activity.
