1 Lutheran High North Technology Setting Up Your LHN on Your MacBook Pro Using an Client Apple Mail An client is a program that checks your and allows you to manage your in a way that is much easier than using a web browser. On your LHN laptop, you will have the choice to use Apple Mail or Microsoft Outlook. Microsoft Outlook Advantages to using an client: Saves time you don t have to go to a website and log in. Just click the icon on the dock. You can leave it open and you ll know immediately when you receive a new message Easy to organize drag s into folders, set up rules for certain s to automatically go into folders, select multiple s at one time to move or delete. Faster When the internet is slow, you do not have to wait to access messages that have already been downloaded. Searching for s is also faster Makes these things much easier: Sending and viewing attachments, setting up groups, ing groups Messages stored on computer A copy of your downloaded messages will be stored on your computer so you can read them offline. Later in the year, we will be transitioning to a new server and having the s stored on the computer will make this transition easier for you. Check multiple accounts in one place Integrates with the calendar and address book on the computer (You ll have less work to do when adding a new contact or calendar event) More formatting options when composing s

2 First, Check Gmail Settings Before attempting to set up your in Outlook or Mail, we are going to log into gmail.com and make sure your settings will allow this type of access. Open Safari, and go to gmail.com. Sign in with your LHN address and password. Gmail.com Sign In Click on the gear icon and then choose settings from the drop down menu

3 Now click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. Forwarding and POP/IMAP Make sure that the button next to Enable IMAP is activated Check Enable IMAP setting Be sure to save your changes Save Changes

4 Outlook or Mail? Which One? The choice of which client to use is your own. If you are already comfortable using Outlook, you may feel most comfortable using it for your LHN mail. If you do not have a preference, we suggest using Apple Mail, as it will integrate with all of the other Apple products we use as well as your gmail calendar and contacts. Setting Up Apple Mail (preferred) To set up your LHN in Apple Mail, start by clicking the mail icon in your dock. Mail icon If you do not have a Mail icon on your dock, click on Launchpad (the rocket ship) and find it in that list. If this is your first time opening Mail, you will be greeted with the welcome to mail screen. Just type in your name, address and password where prompted and click continue

5 On the next screen, you can keep calendars checked (it will sync your calendars) and uncheck the Chat checkbox. Now click create. Your s should begin to download to your computer. For more information about using Apple Mail, see our "Using Apple Mail" document

6 Setting Up Microsoft Outlook To set up your LHN in Microsoft Outlook, start by clicking the Outlook icon in your dock. If it is not on your dock, click on the launchpad icon (rocket ship) and you will find it in there. You may need to place 2 fingers on the trackpad and slide from right to left to see a second page of icons. Outlook icon Launchpad icon (you can access all of your applications by clicking here) Click OK if it asks for access to your contacts. If this is your first time opening Office on your Mac, you may be asked for your name and for updating preferences. Fill in your name Choose No for automatic updates Choose No for the Customer Program

7 If this is your first time opening Office on your Mac, you will see this welcome screen. Click on "Add Account" and skip the next step. Choose Add Account If you do not get a welcome screen as shown above, click on the Outlook menu item at the top of the screen and select "preferences." Then, in the Outlook preferences window, click on "Accounts." Choose Add Account Choose Accounts In this window, you will choose " Account" Choose Accounts

8 Enter your account information as notated below: Your full address Your full address Erase the numbers that appear here originally and type in the ones you see. It will allow you to erase after you've checked the "Override default port" checkboxes. Click "Add Account" Close this window Your s should start to come in. This may take a few minutes.
