1 Timothy D. Miles Michigan State University Department of Plant Pathology 105 Center for Integrated Plant Systems East Lansing, MI Professional Preparation: Doctor of Philosophy (in progress), Plant Pathology, Michigan State University, 2006-present Bachelor of Science, Biology and Chemistry, Western Michigan University, 2005 Research Experience: Graduate Research, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, 8/06-present Identified several blueberry genes using suppressive subtractive hybridization in the resistant cultivar Elliott that are differentially expressed after inoculation with the fungus Colletotrichum acutatum, and documented their temporal expression. Conducted chemical extractions of fruit of resistant and susceptible blueberry cultivars looking for differences in secondary metabolites in response to inoculation. Laboratory Technician Plant Molecular Biology, Western Michigan University, 1/06-7/06 Utilized tissue culture to screen eef1α t-dna mutants for various phenotypes such as lethality, limited germination, delayed development, reduction in vitality, and loss in reproductive ability. Also constructed an inducible antisense mutant to block eef1α gene expression in Arabidopsis. Research Associate Reproductive Toxicology, MPI Research, Mattawan, MI, 1/06-5/06 Investigated the safety of several pre-clinical drugs and monitored animals for a response. Organized and annotated research on a variety of mammals (mice, rats, rabbits, etc.). Learned and performed several laboratory techniques such as chemical formulation, blood preparation for serological testing and several dosing procedures. Undergraduate Research, Western Michigan University, 6/04-12/05 Learned specific lab techniques such as DNA extraction, RNA extraction, PCR, and RT- PCR. Screened Arabidopsis t-dna mutants in order to study loss of function mutations in the eef1α gene family. Designed primers and conducted RT-PCR on screened t-dna mutants looking for reduced expression in specific members of the eef1α family.
