3 Once upon a time in Schiedam, Holland The origin of a global player in spirits FA M I LY B U S I N E S S It was in 1777 that Pieter Jansen opened his own gin distillery in Schiedam. Very soon he had conquered the entire country with his quality product. The foundation for a flourishing family business was laid. 4 A L L I A N C E S The nineteen fifties saw the establishment of a subsidiary in Glasgow, namely Dew Hill Blending Company. Today this company still supervises the maturing of young Scottish malts and grain whiskies, from which Mansion House and Glen Classic are blended. Back in the Netherlands, the company entered into strategic alliances with K. Plantinga & Zoon in Bolsward and F. J. Sonnema in Dokkum. U n i t y In 1972 the name UTO resurfaced when Herman Jansen BV merged with the distillers Vlek & Co. Also a family business, Vlek & Co. placed a similar emphasis on traditional methods and quality. With an enormous distribution network on the domestic market, its foreign network was, however, less highly developed. The situation was exactly the reverse for Herman Jansen. Thus the merger was a natural one in every respect. The new enterprise was given the name UTO Nederland BV. In view of the unity of purpose at work, the letters now stood for U naniem T ot O vereenstemming ( United in Agreement). At the beginning of 2001, most bottling in the Netherlands was transferred to AVANDIS, a joint venture in which UTO has a participating interest. This enterprise is now responsible for the entire logistics of the operation, from the purchasing of the basic raw ingredients and packaging materials to the filling of bottles. One benefit of this expansion is increased efficiency. 4

8 Strong position ON the Dutch market From the traditional to the innovative M A R K E T L E A D E R S Marketing an unusually wide range of brands, UTO has acquired a strong position for itself on the Dutch liquor market. This applies in particular to typically Dutch products such as Dutch gin ( jenever ), Frisian gin bitters ( beerenburg ) and Dutch brandy ( vieux ). Sonnema Berenburg and Jachtbitter are absolute market leaders. Mention should also be made here of its various Notaris jenever specialties, held in high regard by connoisseurs. TA S T E Over the course of time, Dutch consumer tastes have undergone a process of change. The available palette of beverages has thus acquired a considerable number of new colours and shades. International liquors such as whisky, vodka and cognac enjoy more prestige than ever. Here again UTO has responded well to increased demand, for example with Joseph Guy Cognac, which heads the Dutch market. Add to that Café Marakesh Coffee Liqueur, Delaforce Port, Mansion House Whisky and Gorter Jamaica Rum. The most recent example of UTO s market consiousness is Sonnema VodkaHerb, specifically developed for the international market, which perfectly responds to the ever changing taste experience as well as the consumer s desire to be suprised. 8

9 In the Netherlands, UTO supplies to independent liquor stores as well as chain stores and, in the case of beverages with low-alcohol content, supermarkets. And of course UTO also focuses on out-of-home consumption, the on-trade industry being both a major avenue of sales and the cradle of many a trend.
