1 Instruction Goal: To provide opportunities for students to develop concepts and skills related to solving quadratic equations using the square root property. The quadratic equations will have two solutions, one solution, or no real solutions. Common Core Standards Algebra: Solve equations and inequalities in one variable. A-REI.4. Solve quadratic equations in one variable. Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for = 49), taking square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize when the quadratic formula gives comple solutions and write them as a ± bi for real numbers a and b. Student Activities Overview and Answer Key Station 1 Students will be given a number cube. Students will use the number cube to populate quadratic equations that can be solved by using the square root property. They will realize that quadratic equations solved by the square root property have answers which are the +/ of the same number. Answers 1. Answers will vary. Make sure they add the constant to both sides of the equation.. Answers will vary. Make sure they take square root of both sides of the equation. 3. Answers will vary. Make sure they find the +/ square root of the constant. 4. Two, because the eponent tells you that there are two solutions. 5. Answers will vary. Make sure that students first add the constant to both sides of the equation, then take the square root of both sides, then add the constant from the left side to the right side of the equation. 6. 3 Station 3 Instruction Students will be given a deck of playing cards that contain only the numbers 10. Students will draw numbers and use them to populate quadratic equations. They will solve the quadratic equations using the square root property. They will realize that the square root of a negative number yields no real solutions. They will also realize that the square root of 0 yields only one solution. Answers 1. Answers will vary. Make sure students subtract the constant from both sides of the equation.. negative, because of subtraction 3. 5 Discussion Guide Instruction To support students in reflecting on the activities and to gather some formative information about student learning, use the following prompts to facilitate a class discussion to debrief the station activities. Prompts/Questions 1. How many solutions does a quadratic equation have?. If the standard form of a quadratic equation is a + b + c = 0, which letter (a, b, or c) should be equal to 0 in order to use the square root property? 3. If = a negative number, how many solutions does the equation have in the real number system? 4. If = 0, how many solutions does the equation have? 5. Why does the square root property yield answers that are the ± version of the same number? Think, Pair, Share Have students jot down their own responses to questions, then discuss with a partner (who was not in their station group), and then discuss as a whole class. Because there are two possible solutions, a positive number can be squared to equal a positive number, and a negative number can be squared to yield that same positive number.
