Use the Universal Remote Control (included) to access and manage your system s services. 1

6 Set-Top Box There are two set-top box models available, the ADB Non-DVR 3800W and ADB DVR Both models can be enabled to receive HD channels, while the ADB 5810 features a Digital Video Recorder (DVR). The following details are provided for informational purposes only. Do not change or alter any of the equipment installed by TDS. Also, set-top boxes should remain connected to power to ensure they receive the most current software updates. If the set-top box is disconnected from power, it will take 10 minutes to reboot once reconnected to power. At times, TDS may need the MAC address for your set-top box. This will allow us to provide new services remotely, without sending a technician to your home. The 12-character MAC address is printed on the label on the bottom of the set-top box. Customers can also view the MAC address by following these steps: 1. Make sure the set-top box is turned on. 2. Press the green button, then A box will display on the television with information that includes the MAC address for the set-top box. 2

IR Sensor 1. Record LED - The red Record LED indicates that a program is being recorded. 2. Power LED - The Power LED is green when the set-top box is on and red when it s in standby mode. 3. Menu Button - Access the TDS TV On-Screen Menu. This provides the same function as the Menu button on the remote control. 4. Power Button - Turns the set-top box device on or places it in standby mode. This performs the same function as the Power button on the remote control. 5. OK Button - The OK button selects the current item. This performs the same function as the OK button on the remote control. 6. Arrow Buttons - Navigate the On-Screen Guide and Menu. This performs the same function as the arrow keys on the remote control. 7. RES Button - The RES button changes the resolution used by the settop box. There are five different settings available and the resolution selected will be briefly displayed on the front panel. 8. EPG Button - The EPG button will tell the set-top box to display the Electronic Program Guide on the television. It performs the same function as the Guide button on the remote control. 9. HD LED - The green HD LED indicates that a high-definition program is in progress. 10. IR Sensor - Receives a signal from the Universal Remote Control. 3

Please do not connect any USB devices to this port. 2. Ethernet port - The Ethernet port connects provides a 100Base-T connection for the set-top box to the video network and will typically be connected to a female RJ45 connector mounted on the wall. 3. HDMI (HD Digital Output) - The HDMI connection is used to connect the set-top box to HDMI-capable devices such as televisions. HDMI transfers video and audio over this high-speed connection. This type of connection is sensitive to the physical cabling and terminations, which may affect signal quality. The User should be aware of potential incompatibilities between HDMI devices. 4. Component Output (HD Analog Output) - The Component connection is the preferred connection for the set-top box to the television. The user is very unlikely to encounter any compatibility issues using this connection. The red, blue, and green connectors are used for video. The red and white connectors are used for audio. 5. CVBS (Composite) Video and Stereo Audio Output - The Composite connection is typically only used with older television models that do not provide a component connection. This connection is not capable of providing the high-definition content over this connection. 4

9 The yellow connector is used for video signals. The red and white connectors are used for audio signals. If you do not observe any on-screen menus or Electronic Program Guide (EPG) data when using this connection, the set-top box resolution may be set too high for the physical connection. The resolution may be adjusted by pressing the Green button and then the 1 button on the Remote Control. The front of the set-top box should indicate 4803 briefly after the resolution is changed. 6. RF Modulated Output to TV (Coax) - The Coax connection is typically only used with older televisions that do not provide Component or Composite connections. When using this connection, the User must have the television set for either channel 3 or channel 4, depending on the television and set-top box settings. If you do not observe any on-screen menus or Electronic Program Guide (EPG) data when using this connection, the set-top box resolution may be set too high for the physical connection. The resolution may be adjusted by pressing the Green button and then the 1 button on the Remote Control. The front of the set-top box should indicate 4803 briefly after the resolution is changed. 7. S-VIDEO Output - The S-VIDEO connection can be used for set-top boxto-television interconnection for standard-definition video. If you do not observe any on-screen menus or Electronic Program Guide (EPG) data when using this connection, the set-top box resolution may be set too high for the physical connection. The resolution may be adjusted by pressing the Green button and then the 1 button on the Remote Control. The front of the set-top box should indicate 4803 briefly after the resolution is changed. 8. VIDEO Output - This is a Composite connection and typically only used with older television models that do not provide a component connection. This connection is not capable of providing the highdefinition content. The yellow connector is used for video signals. If you do not observe any on-screen menus or Electronic Program Guide (EPG) data when using this connection, the set-top box resolution may be set too high for the physical connection. The resolution may be adjusted by pressing the Green button and then the 1 button on the Remote Control. The front of the set-top box should indicate 4803 briefly after the resolution is changed. 5

10 9. RCA Stereo Output - The red and white connectors are used for audio output. These may be connected to the television or other audio equipment. 10. S/PDIF (Digital Audio Output) - The S/PDIF connection provides an optical output which may be used for audio to a receiver, which is typically used for home entertainment systems. 11. Power plug - The power connection is where the set-top box receives its power. Only the power cord provided should be used. 13 Resolution Settings If you have the ADB 5810W DVR set-top box, you can change the resolution by pressing the front panel button labeled RES. It will scroll through your options: 480i, 720p, and 1080i. If you have the ADB Non-DVR 3800W set-top box, use the remote control and follow these instructions: Remote Control Key Sequence Press the Green button Press the number 1 on the number keys Press the Green button Press the number 2 on the number keys Press the Green button Press the number 3 on the number keys Resolution Front Panel Displays 480i i p 480P Description Standard definition resolution 480i and RF output on UHF channel 3 Standard definition resolution 480i and RF output on UHF channel 4 Extended definition resolution 480p Press the Green button Press the number 4 on the number keys 720p 720P High definition resolution 720p Press the Green button Press the number 5 on the number keys 1080i 1080 High definition resolution 1080i Please Note: Only the 480i settings should be used when using the Composite, S-Video, or Coax connection between the set-top box and the television. 9

14 USING YOUR REMOTE CONTROL TDS TV includes a Universal Remote Control, which is programmed to work with your TDS TV set-top box. Use the remote to turn power on/off, navigate through channels, and move within screens. Selections are confirmed by pressing OK. The set-top box receives signals from the remote. Be sure to point the remote at the set-top box. 1 Features 1. Power and Device buttons: Controls set-top box, TV, and other devices. Be sure to press the Mode key, then Power to power a device on or off. 2. Set Up: Program the remote to work with other devices DVR/DVD/VCR Controls: Controls the functions of the device selected. RECORD: Allows you to record from the Guide or while you are watching a program. PAUSE: Pauses playback at the current point. REW: Reverses playback from the current point. Pressing the REW button multiple times increases playback speed from normal to 4x, 15x, 60x, and finally to 300x. FF: Advances playback to the current point. Pressing the FF button multiple times increases playback speed from normal to 4x, 15x, 60x, and finally to 300x. PLAY: Allows you to resume watching the program at normal speed. STOP: Allows you to exit playback of a DVR program and return to Live TV. BACK: Reverses playback in 10-second increments. SKIP: Advances playback in 20-second increments. 10

15 4. Menu: Displays on-screen Menu providing access to Vault, Settings, Favorites, and Search features. 5. Guide: Displays channel listings and toggles between established Favorite lists. 6. Guide Viewing Controls: Day +/-: Moves program list forward and back in 12-hour increments. 17. Arrows/OK: Navigates menus and guides, and selects current item. 18. Info: Displays program detail. 19. DVR List: Displays features to schedule recordings, priorities, and view record history. 20. Live TV: Available only on DVR settop box and returns customer to viewing Live TV. Page +/-: Scrolls through Guide, page by page, or changes channels while watching live TV. 7. Red Button: Used for special function in Hardware Settings. 8. Green Button: Used for special function to change resolution on set-top box. (Yellow and Blue buttons have no use at this time.) 9. Volume Buttons: Change volume, up or down. 10. Mute: Turn sound off/on. 11. Number buttons: Enter a channel number, text, PIN, or password. 12. Input: Scrolls through Input options available on TV. 13. CC: Closed Captioning feature that adds text to screen for CC ready TV. 14. Last: Returns to the last channel viewed. 15. Channel buttons: Changes channels, up or down. 16. Exit: Exits the Guide or Menu

16 Programming Your Remote Control The Universal Remote Control can be programmed to operate other devices such as your TV, DVD, Home Theater System, or VCR. Automatic Search 1. Press and release the TV button. 2. Press and hold the RCU SETUP until the TV button blinks twice. 3. Enter and the TV button will blink twice. 4. Aim the remote at the TV and press and release the POWER button. 5. Press and release CH+ or CH until the TV turns off. 6. Press the POWER button to turn the TV on. 7. Press the RCU SETUP button to store the code for the TV. The TV button will blink twice. The remote is now ready to operate the TV. Use Learning to Find Codes Your remote control includes a learning feature. That means you can transfer some unique functions from the remote control of other devices to this remote control. 1. Press the RCU SETUP until the last selected mode button blinks twice (e.g., TV or DVD). 2. Enter Press the TV button. 4. Press the button you wish to program (e.g., POWER) on the ADB remote. 5. Place the ADB remote and the original remote head-to-head, about 2 inches apart. 6. Press and hold the same button (POWER) on the original remote. The ADB remote TV button will blink rapidly and turn off. Keep holding the button on the original remote until the TV button on the ADB remote blinks twice. Volume Lock The remote control enables you to control the volume level of different devices without selecting the mode key for each device. For example, if you are watching a movie on your DVD player, you can adjust the volume for your TV set without pressing the TV mode key on your remote control. 1. Press and release the TV button. 2. Press and hold the SETUP button until the TV button blinks twice. 3. Enter Press and release the TV button and wait until it blinks twice. 12

17 For a complete list of codes, please reference the instructions provided with your set-top box, or download the ADB Remote Control Programming Instructions at USING TDS TV Basic Operations Turning the System On You ll need both the television and set-top box ON to operate TDS TV. - Press TV and POWER on the remote - Press STB and POWER on the remote Selecting an Operating Mode You must ensure that your TDS TV Universal Remote Control is in the correct operating mode: To control your TDS TV set-top box, press the STB button on the remote control To control your TV, press the TV button To control your VCR or DVD player press the AUX button Please Note: All normal TV viewing is done through the set-top box. This includes channel changing, using the Menu or Guide, and even adjusting the volume. Please make sure to program your Universal Remote Control to fully enjoy TDS TV. Security Measures To ensure you have control over your TDS TV account, TDS provides you with: A 4-digit numeric password that is used to access various settings A numeric personal identification number (PIN), used to make purchases The default for both the password and PIN are You are able to modify both in System Settings. 13

18 Channel Guide The TDS TV on-screen Channel Guide provides the most up-to-date program information in an easy-to-use, intuitive format. Use visual cues on the Guide to view, browse, and search program listings, as well as purchase pay-per-view (PPV) programs. You can access up to one week of programming information. The picture in guide function allows you to scan the guide while watching a program. Press Guide on the remote to view detailed program information, locate your favorite shows, and more. Program titles with a yellow star indicates the program is a new episode. Understanding Color Coding The Guide is color-coded to let you easily differentiate the type of programs available. Colors include: Description Box Channel Movie Purple Green (Non-PPV) Red (PPV) Regular Programming Blue Green (Non-PPV) Red (PPV) 14

19 View Programming Use the Guide to view available programs and brief descriptions of each program. Use the Info button while you re viewing a program to see its description. For programs with lengthy descriptions, press Info twice to view the full description. The following are different options for viewing programming and information: Press GUIDE to access the program list, then: Use the navigational arrow keys to browse programs. The left/right arrows move through the guide channel by channel. The up/down arrows advance the Guide in minute increments, displaying future programming. Use CH +/- or PG +/- to scroll through the guide, screen by screen. Use Day+/Day- buttons to advance the program listing 12 hours forward or back. Highlighting a program displays information in the upper left hand window. Press OK to change to the channel or press Exit to return to the Guide. Selecting Channels Please Note: If the remote does not function properly, ensure it is accurately programmed for compatibility with your brand of television. To view a channel or change channels, use one of the following methods: Enter the channel number (e.g., 4 or 812) using the numeric keypad on the remote and press OK. Scroll the Guide screen by screen by using CH +/- or PG+/- to find the channel and press OK. Scroll the Guide channel by channel using the navigation arrows to find the channel and press OK. You can return to the last channel viewed by pressing the LAST button on the remote. Program information (channel, network, title, airtime, duration, and description) appears briefly as channels change. 15

20 FEATURES Searching the Guide Search allows you to enter the name (or partial name) of a program you are looking for. 1. Press Menu on the remote, select SEARCH and press OK. 2. The Search screen will display, press OK on the remote and the on-screen keypad displays. 3. Use the arrow keys to navigate letters and numbers to spell search term/word, and select Done. 4. Arrow down to Search Guide, click OK and select Extended or Quick to begin your search. Extended allows you to search up to 14 days of programming, and may take seconds to pull all titles matching your criteria. Quick allows you to search up to 4 days of programming. In both Quick and Extended, a spinning icon will appear in the program window, indicating the search is in progress. 5. The Search feature queries both titles and descriptions of the keyword you are searching for. Please Note: Searching takes a few moments. You will see a spinning wheel in the right corner of the picture. Do not press any keys until after the wheel has stopped spinning. If you press a key while it is spinning, the guide will stop searching. 16

21 Reminders Set Reminders Schedule a reminder and a pop-up window will notify you that the program is about to begin. 1. Highlight a future program in the Guide and press OK. Highlight the program listing and press OK. 2. Highlight Set Reminder and press OK and you will then be returned to the Guide. 3. The program listing will show a yellow clock next to the program name. 4. A few minutes before your program comes on, a box will appear on your screen, telling you that you have a reminder. Press INFO to display the reminder. Highlight the button showing the program name. Press OK to tune to that program or highlight Cancel and press OK to ignore the reminder. Set Autotune Schedule an Autotune and the television will automatically change channels to the program. 1. Highlight a future program in the Guide and press OK. Highlight the program listing and press OK. 2. Highlight Set Autotune and press OK and you will then be returned to the Guide. 3. The program listing will show an orange dot next to the program name. 4. Just before the program begins a message will pop up, giving you the option to tune in or cancel. You can choose either option or just wait. The pop-up will go away and the system will tune you to the correct channel. 17

22 Canceling Reminders and Autotune 1. Select the program to cancel by highlighting it. Then press OK. 2. Arrow up or down to Cancel Reminder. Then press OK and you ll be returned to the Guide. Program Alarm Change the reminder time for Reminders and Autotune features. You can set the system to notify you 0 seconds, 30 seconds, 2 minutes, or 5 minutes before the scheduled event. 1. Press MENU on the remote. 2. Select Settings and enter your password. 3. Use the arrows to highlight Program Alarm field and press OK on the remote. 4. Set the desired amount of time desired for the Reminder to occur before the program starts (0 seconds, 30 seconds, 2 minutes, or 5 minutes). 5. Select the Submit button and press OK. 6. A confirmation box will appear indicating the setting has been successfully updated. 7. Press OK. Favorites Create, edit, or delete a list of your most frequently viewed and favorite channels. Use the default favorites lists (All or Subscribed) or create your own (up to 5 unique lists.) Create Favorites Lists 1. Press MENU on the remote. The Main menu displays. 2. Select Favorites, press OK. 3. Select Create, press OK. 4. Now, you must name your list. In highlighted name box, click OK button to get the keypad. You must press Clear All on the keypad before you begin entering the name. When you have completed the name click Done. 5. Browse the list of channels to either select or deselect each channel. 6. Press OK on the remote to add the highlighted channel to your Favorites list. A green heart appears next to the selected channel when it has been added to your Favorites list. Repeat these steps for all the channels you want to add to your list. 7. Select Update and press OK when you ve completed the Favorites list. 18

23 Please Note: Pressing the GUIDE button will toggle through the names of your Favorites lists. Edit Your Favorites 1. Press MENU on the remote. 2. Select Favorites, click OK, then Edit. 3. Choose the list to rename or edit, then click OK. 4. If you are changing the list name, you must click OK while the name box is highlighted, then the on-screen keypad appears to rename the list. When you have completed renaming the list, click Done. 5. Browse the list of channels and press OK to either select or deselect each channel. A green heart appears when you have added the channel as a favorite and disappears when a channel is removed from a list. 6. Select Update and click OK to complete the changes and exit. Deleting Favorites List 1. Press MENU on the remote. 2. Select Favorites, click OK. 3. Choose Delete. 4. Select the list to delete and select Yes. The Favorites list will no longer show the deleted list. 19

24 MENU SETTINGS AND PREFERENCES Use the on-screen menu to change your system Personal Identification Number (PIN), manage Favorites, maintain Parental Controls, and adjust System Settings in one location. <screenshot: Menu-Settings-Screen.jpg> PIN and Password To ensure you have control over your TDS TV account, TDS provides you with: A 4-digit numeric password that is used to access various settings, and is always required for the main account to access Settings. A numeric personal identification number (PIN) used to make purchases, like pay-per-view programming. The default for both the password and PIN are For security purposes, you should change your PIN and password in System Settings. 20

25 Change System Password Create and modify your Password for System Settings. 1. Press MENU on the remote. 2. Select Settings, press OK, enter your Password and press OK. (The default is 0000.) 3. Use right arrow key to go to users tab and press OK. 4. Default selection is main account on the User tab. 5. Select Edit and press OK. 6. Enter your old password using the remote. 7. Enter your new password using the remote, and re-enter to confirm. 8. Enter your PIN. 9. Select Submit and press OK to complete the Password modification and return to the menu. A confirmation message appears; after a few seconds, the system returns to the menu. Changing or Disabling the PIN Change or disable the PIN for purchases. 1. Press MENU on the remote. 2. Select Settings, press OK, enter your Password and press OK. 3. Use right arrow key to go to Users tab and press OK. 4. Default selection is main account on the Users tab. 5. Select Edit and press OK. 6. Enter your old PIN, then your new PIN, and re-enter to confirm. 7. If you want the PIN enabled, make sure the Enable PIN box is checked. If you want the PIN disabled, make sure to deselect the Enable PIN box. This will eliminate the need to enter a PIN for any purchases. 8. Select Submit and press OK to complete the PIN modification and return to the menu. A confirmation message will appear. After a few seconds, the system returns to the Menu. Require Login This feature allows you to require a login to the system after a set-top box reboot or at the Sign-In screen. 1. Press MENU on the remote. 2. Select Settings, press OK, enter your Password and press OK. 3. Use right arrow key to go to Users tab and press OK. 4. Arrow to Require Login box and press OK to check or uncheck the box. 5. Arrow to Submit and press OK on the remote to confirm your changes. 21

26 Parental Controls TDS TV includes advanced parental control features that enable you to restrict the types of programming that can be viewed. These controls can be set for your entire main account or you can create additional TDS TV accounts, each with their own set of controls. For example, you can create accounts for your children that have more restrictions. These additional accounts are known as sub accounts. Setting Parental Controls for the Main Account 1. Press MENU on the remote control. 2. Select Settings and press OK on the remote. 3. Enter your Password, arrow down and highlight OK. Press OK on the remote. (The default is 0000.) 4. The Settings screen will appear. 5. In the Preferences tab, arrow to the box for Parental Control and press OK to checkmark the box. 6. Select Edit next to Parental Control. It will prompt you to save changes. Select Yes and press OK on the remote, which takes you to the Users tab. 7. Click a category field. When the box is highlighted green press OK on your remote, then use the left/right arrows to scroll through options. Press OK to save each setting. 22

For example, if you check the PG box in Movie Rating field, any movie rated PG or higher will be blocked. Unlock Timeout This feature allows you to temporarily unlock Parental Controls (from 30 to 270 minutes) so users can watch higher-rated content by not having to turn off Parental Controls entirely and risk forgetting to turn them back on. This is a countdown timer that starts with the last activity from the remote. If the timeout is set for 30 minutes, it may not re-lock for 1-1/2 hours if the user continues to interact (change channels) with the set-top box for that first hour. As soon as the user stops interacting, the countdown begins and 30 minutes later the Parental Control is relocked. 23

28 Channel Blocking To block channels: 1. Press MENU on the remote control. 2. Select Settings. 3. Arrow to Channel Blocking, press OK to check the box, then click Edit. 4. Use the arrow keys to move to a channel selection you want to block and click OK to block the channel. A circle with a slash appears next to the blocked channel. 5. Continue this process until you have selected all channels that you want blocked. Click Update. 6. On Preferences tab, select Submit to finalize changes. Block Unrated This feature allows you to block unrated programming. Show Blocked Program Info This feature allows you to still view programming guide information, even if the channel is blocked with Parental Controls. If this option is not selected, then the program guide information displays a default message indicating the program information is not available due to Parental Controls. Content Ratings block programming by specific content rather than overall rating. Blockable content includes: S: Sexual Situations D: Suggestive Dialogue V: Violence L: Language F: Fantasy Violence When finished, select Submit, press OK to save. Please Note: You can block programming by movie/tv rating, by content, or by both. 24

29 Sub Accounts The main user can create and maintain sub accounts from the Settings menu. Sub accounts are a convenient way for parents to restrict which type of programming children are allowed to view. User IDs, passwords, and parental control settings can be configured for each sub account. 1. Press MENU on the remote control. 2. Select Settings, enter your password, and press OK on the remote. The Settings screen will appear. 3. Check the Require Login box to enable login for sub accounts. 4. Arrow to SUBMIT and press OK on the remote. 5. Press MENU on the remote control. 6. Select Settings, enter your Password, and press OK on the remote. 7. On the Settings screen, select the Users tab at the top of the screen and press OK on the remote. You will see the accounts with options to Add, Edit, Parental Controls, or Delete. 8. Select Add and press the OK button to add a new sub account. 9. Select the new login field and press OK to bring up the onscreen keyboard. Enter the new sub account name and click Done when finished. 10. Enter a password for the new sub account in both the New Password and Confirm Password fields. 11. Enter an allowance if the user is allowed to purchase pay-per-view items. 12. Enter the PIN for the main account. 13. Check the Enable Caller ID box if the new user should see Caller ID pop-up messages. 14. Select Continue and press the OK button. 15. Continue by setting the desired parental controls. 16. Select Submit and press OK on the remote when done. The new sub account is created. 17. Press OK, then press Exit on the remote to return to viewing live TV. 25

30 Log In Using a Sub Account 1. Press MENU on the remote control. 2. Select Sign Out and press OK, and the Sign In screen appears. 3. At the Sign-In screen, change the user by highlighting the name field and clicking OK. Use the up and down arrow keys to change users. Press OK when done. Select Yes to save changes. 4. Enter the sub account password or for the selected account by highlighting the password field and typing in the password. Click Sign In when you are finished. Please Note: Parental controls must be enabled on the main account for the feature to be active on sub accounts. Caller ID When you subscribe to TDS phone service and Caller ID, you ll see who s calling in a pop-up window on the television. <Screenshot: Caller-ID-Popup.jpg> Enable Caller ID This feature allows you to enable or disable the Caller ID pop-up. 1. Press Menu on the remote, select Settings, and enter your password. The Preferences menu will appear. 2. Arrow to Enable Caller ID box and press OK on the remote to check (enable) and uncheck (disable). 3. Click Submit to confirm changes. Review Caller ID Log 1. Press MENU on the remote and select Vault. 2. Highlight Caller ID and press OK on your remote. A list of your received calls appears. 3. To delete, highlight the caller, press OK. 26

31 Caller ID Timeout Field Change the length of time the Caller ID notification appears on the TV screen. 1. Press Menu on the remote, select Settings, and enter your password. The Preferences menu will appear. 2. Arrow to Caller ID Timeout and press OK on your remote. 3. Use the left/right arrows to scroll through options (5 45 seconds, in 5-second intervals). 4. Click Submit to confirm changes. OTHER SETTINGS Theme This is a fixed setting that cannot be changed. Set-Top Box Hardware Settings Advance settings optimize video output, based on the video and television settings. 1. Press MENU on the remote, select Settings, and enter your Password. 2. Select Hardware Settings and press OK. It may take seconds to load. 3. Highlight a settings option and press the BLUE button on the remote to view a description of each: TV Configuration: This screen allows you to configure conversion mode and aspect ratio. Display: Display screen allows you to change current display resolution and digital output format. Be careful when switching output modes; check if your display device supports target resolution or digital output mode. If nothing happens after switching resolution, please wait patiently. Original resolution will be restored after 10 seconds. You will need to confirm your changes by pressing the OK button. 27

32 System Info: This screen provides you with various information about your set-top box. Audio: This screen allows you to configure audio output format and primary and secondary audio languages. RF Modulator: This screen allows you to configure RF modulator default channel. 4. Make updates to any of these settings by using the arrow keys and pressing OK on the remote. 5. Once you ve made changes to the settings, press the RED button on the remote to save settings and return to the previous screen. PAY-PER-VIEW (PPV) PPV lists purchased movies and events available for purchase. To Rent a PPV Movie/Event: 1. Press GUIDE on the remote. 2. Navigate to a PPV channel you want to watch. 3. Press OK on the remote. 4. A box will appear that asks What would you like to do? If you are within the allotted start window (the first 10 minutes) you can select Buy PPV. If you are late for the start of the show, you can select Buy Next PPV. 5. After you select Buy PPV, a pop-up screen with information (title, cost, start time) about the event will appear. You ll be asked to enter your PIN. You may also check a box to share the video on other set-top boxes on your account. 6. Press OK after you enter PIN. Or, select the on-screen button marked Buy and press OK (Cancel is also an option). When you order a PPV event in advance, the set-top box will either tune to the PPV channel automatically at the correct time, or a pop-up window will notify you of the PPV event. The notification depends on the Reminder and Autotune options you have set up. To adjust, visit the PPV events screen in the Vault menu. Please Note: There is a monthly PPV credit limit of $150. If you exceed this limit, call TDS Financial Services at to clear the balance. Share Rentals To share purchased PPV events/programs with sub users (other set-top boxes), check the box (use OK to check/uncheck). Allowance Set a dollar limit for sub accounts to purchase pay-per-view events. Find more information in the Parental Controls section of this user guide. 28

33 PPV Action Field Set a reminder when PPV is ready. Options are: None, Reminder, and Autotune. 1. Press Menu on the remote. 2. Select Settings, enter your password and select OK. 3. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the PPV Action field and press OK. 4. Set the desired action (None, Reminder, or Autotune). 5. Select the Submit button and press OK. 6. A confirmation box will appear indicating the setting has been successfully updated. 7. Press OK. VAULT FEATURES The Vault stores purchased programming, a list of your scheduled reminders and autotune events, messages from TDS, and a Caller ID log. To access stored information: 1. Press MENU on the remote. 2. Highlight Vault and click OK. 3. Highlight the category you wish to access and click OK. Purchased Programming Video (Not Currently Available) Video provides access to Video-On-Demand rentals. Pay-Per-View Events If you purchase Pay-Per-View, the purchased content will be listed in the Vault until the time it will be available to the customer. Pay-Per-Block (Not Currently Available) All-day PPV movies that you ve purchased are located here. Sports Packages (Not Currently Available) Any special sports packages you purchase are located here. 29

34 Reminders In the Vault, you can see what programs are set up with reminders. 1. Press Menu on the remote, select Vault and press OK. 2. Arrow to reminders and press OK. 3. View the list of scheduled Reminders and Autotune events. 4. To cancel an event, arrow to the reminder, and press OK on the remote. 5. Select Cancel Reminder to delete or Cancel to exit. 6. Press EXIT on the remote to return to Live TV. Messages The Vault stores messages that TDS has sent to you regarding promotional offers, upcoming pay-per-view events, and service upgrades. Access Stored Messages: All scheduling change notifications are stored here. For example, if you set up a Series Record for all new episodes of a certain TV show, your DVR will send notices of skipped recordings when an episode is not new. To access them: 1. Press Menu on the remote, select Vault and press OK. 2. Arrow to Messages and press OK. 3. Highlight a message to view in upper left corner of screen. 4. Use arrow up/down to view different messages. 5. To delete a message, press OK on the remote and choose Delete or Cancel. 30

35 6. Press EXIT on the remote to return to live TV. New Message Alert Whenever you receive a new message from TDS, an alert will appear on your screen informing you of the new message. 1. To read the message, press INFO on your remote, highlight the message and press OK. 2. To ignore the message, press EXIT on your remote. USING TDS TV DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER (DVR) Basic Information Never again will you have to worry about missing your favorite programming. Your TDS TV DVR makes it easy to schedule and record your favorite shows and movies. You ll be able to watch your favorite programming whenever you want. And with fast forward and rewind options, you ll never miss a moment of the action you can even pause live TV! The following information will help you set up your DVR so you can enjoy all the programming TDS TV has to offer! Recording & Controlling Live TV A DVR allows you to record digital TV broadcasts for later viewing. It s a hard drive, similar to a computer, with the following features and capabilities: Record one program and watch another Record two programs and watch a previously recorded event Record up to 100 hours of standard definition programming or up to 30 hours of high definition (HD) programming A DVR will also create a temporary recording of a program you re watching. This is referred to as a buffer. Your DVR will automatically buffer approximately the last several minutes of the program you re watching and continues to buffer until you switch to another channel, turn off the DVR, or record a program. With the buffering feature, you ll be able to: Pause live TV so you don t miss a moment of your favorite show Use fast forward and rewind to move frame by frame for an instant replay Fast forward up to the point of live TV Quick Reference You have two options for accessing the DVR Menu: 1. Press the DVR List button on the remote control or 31

36 2. Press MENU on the remote control, then select DVR. You ll have the following options: Recordings: Provides access to a complete list of programs that you have previously recorded. Go here to watch, lock, or delete a recorded program. To Record: Provides a list of scheduled recording events. Go here to modify any future recording events. You ll have the option to sort by title, date, channel, and skipped vs. not skipped recordings. Schedule Priority: Allows you to prioritize programs that are scheduled to be recorded. This is to ensure the most important are recorded if there s a time conflict. Schedule Event: Allows you to schedule a recording, reminder, or Autotune event for individual programs. Record History: Access a list of when a recording starts, stops, is cancelled, is auto-deleted when space runs low on the drive, or when a user deletes a recording. There are three options for scheduling a program to record: While watching a program, press RECORD. Your set-top box will begin recording and a red RECORD icon will appear in the informational window. In the Guide, highlight the program and press RECORD. If the program is currently on, it will begin recording immediately. If the program has yet to begin, a recording event is scheduled and will begin recording when the show begins. In the DVR Menu, select Schedule Event and make the appropriate selections for the program you want to record. There are two options for watching a recorded DVR event: Press DVR LIST on the remote control and select Recordings. Press MENU on the remote control, select DVR, and then select Recordings. The following are basic functions of the remote control buttons when playing a DVR event: RECORD: Allows you to record from the Guide or while you are watching a program. PAUSE: Pauses playback at the current point. REW: Reverses playback from the current point. Pressing the REW button multiple times increases playback speed from normal to 4x, 15x, 60x, and finally to 300x. 32

37 FF: Advances playback to the current point. Pressing the FF button multiple times increases playback speed from normal to 4x, 15x, 60x, and finally to 300x. PLAY: Allows you to resume watching the program at normal speed. STOP: Allows you to exit playback of a DVR program and return to live TV. BACK: Reverses playback in 10-second increments. SKIP: Advances playback in 20-second increments. Record a Program This feature allows you to schedule future programs to record. 1. Press GUIDE on the remote, select the program you wish to record and press OK. 2. Select Record Program to schedule the event you wish to record, press OK. 3. On the Guide, a red button will appear next to the title of the program, which indicates it is scheduled to be recorded. 4. If you want to add recording time to the start or end of the program, make sure the program to record is still highlighted and press OK on the remote to display the Options Menu. 5. Choose Edit Recording and press OK to display the Pad In/Pad Out window. 6. Arrow to the Pad In field, then use the left and right arrows to add minutes to the beginning of the recording time. Press OK to confirm. 7. Arrow to the Pad Out field, then use the left and right arrows to add minutes to the end of the recording time. Press OK to confirm. 8. When you are finished, select OK and you ll return to the guide. Other options, such as Set Reminder, Set Autotune, Add/Remove from Favorites, and More Info are available from this screen. For more information, see the Features section of this user guide. 33

38 Schedule a Series of Recordings Series Recording is useful when you want to make sure not to miss a single episode of your favorite show. 1. Press GUIDE on the remote, select a future program series you wish to record and press the RECORD button on the remote twice. You should see two red buttons next to the program title. 2. While still on the program title, press OK to bring up the Series Record options window. 3. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to move through the option screens. Up/down arrows navigate to the different fields. Use the left/right arrows to toggle settings in each field and press OK on the remote. The Option screens include: 34

39 Edit Recording: Allows you to add up to 60 minutes of recording time to the scheduled start and/or end time of an individual program. Edit Series Recording: Allows you to set preferences for various recording options: Channels: This defaults to the channel that you originally scheduled the recording. Changing this field to ALL will record the program when it appears on any channel. Preference: Allows you to specify standard definition or HD recording. Episodes: ALL will record any program, New Only will record any new episodes. A red circle on the guide indicates new episodes set for recording. A gray circle indicates an old episode (and skipped recording). Please Note: When selecting New Episodes only, your DVR will send notifications of older episodes which will not be recorded. Pad In: Allows you to add recording time at the start of a program for the entire series by selecting 1, 5, 30, or 60 minutes. Pad Out: Allows you to add recording time at the end of a program for the entire series by selecting 1, 5, 30, or 60 minutes. Limit To: This defaults to ALL, which will record all events. Or choose 1 episode, 5 episodes, or 10 episodes to limit the number of recordings. Skip Episode: Cancel a scheduled episode recording; red buttons turns to gray. Cancel Series Recording: Cancels all future events from recording. Add to Favorites: Allows you to add the channel to an existing Favorites List. More Info: Provides program title and information. Cancel: Returns to the Guide. 4. Press OK to make changes and then EXIT to return to live TV. 35
