Crab Ball Duration: as long as you like Sections: Brownie, Guide, The Senior Section What you need: a ball, cones, large indoor area 1. Divide the girls into two teams. 2. Each team should nominate one person to be goalkeeper. 3. Make two goals using cones. 4. Get each team to sit on one side of the floor. 5. The goalkeepers should be sitting in front of their goals. 6. Girls should get into a crab position by putting all of their weight on their hands and feet with their stomachs facing upwards. 7. The aim of the game is to score goals in the opposite team's goal by rolling the ball along with your feet and passing it to your team mates. Try it this way If the girls are unable to form the crab position, play as upside-down crabs. Safety tip: depending on the floor surface, girls should take their shoes off to avoid stepping on each other s hands. Giants Duration: one or two meetings Sections: Brownies, Guides Your girls will love this game, which is a bit like Rock, Paper, Scissors. You will need to explain this game to the girls, and have a few practice sessions. 1. Divide the girls into two equal teams. 2. Each team finds a quiet corner and decides on a character. 3. After choosing their character, each team stands facing each other with their hands behind their backs. After the count of three, the whole team acts out their character. 4. Points go to the team that chooses the winning character - see the list below. Characters Elf - squat down and make pointed ears by holding two fingers up by your ears (similar to making bunny ears) 2

Giant - stand on tiptoe with your arms raised above your head (feel free to make suitable growling noises!) Wizard - stand normally but with arms outstretched as if casting a spell Winning characters Giants win against wizards. Wizards win against elves. Elves win against giants. If the two teams choose the same character, it is a draw and no points are awarded. Make it more active The winning team tries to catch members of the losing team. If caught, they become part of the winning team. Lucky shapes Duration: 20 minutes Sections: Rainbows What you need: chalk, music player, paper, pencil Girls need to be agile and alert for this game! 1. Divide the unit into teams of four to six. There should be an equal number in each team. If there is an odd number, girls could take turns to be in charge of the music. 2. Draw chalk squares, triangles and circles on the floor. There should be one shape for each girl. 3. When the music starts, the girls move around the shapes. When it stops, they have to stand on a shape one girl per shape. 4. Record scores as follows: a player in a square scores five points a player in a circle scores three points a player in a triangle scores one point When the scores have been added up, the game begins again. If you can t use chalk on the floor, you could use different coloured carpet squares or laminated shapes. On the bus Sections: Rainbows, Brownies, Guides What you need: one chair per person, plus three extra chairs This game will burn off the girls excess energy! 1. Each girl gets a chair and they arrange them in short rows, with an aisle running down the middle (like the layout of a bus). 3

2. Use one extra chair as a seat for the driver. Position the two other chairs with a space between them to act as the doors. Leaders can sit on these chairs to supervise the game. 3. Tell the girls that they are only allowed on and off the bus through the doors. 4. A Leader shouts, Off the bus! and the girls get up from their chairs and run through the doors. 5. They run around the bus until a Leader shouts On the bus! The girls must then go back through the doors and find a seat. 6. Take one chair away each time. The girl who does not find a chair is out. 7. The girl who manages to sit on the last chair is the winner. Pass the bean bag Duration: 20 minutes What you need: a bean bag and a large space This is a giant game of piggy in the middle! 1. Get the girls into two teams. 2. Get one team to spread out and stand in a zig zag formation. 3. The girls on the opposite team should each place themselves between two of the girls standing in the zig zag. 4. The aim of the game is for the team standing in the zig zag formation to successfully pass the bean bag from one end of the zig zag to the other. 5. The girls in the opposite team must try to catch the bean bag as it is being passed along the line. 6. Teams could take it in turns: time each team to see which can complete the task the quickest. Take it further Introduce more bean bags or different size/shape balls. Piggies everywhere What you need: a ball The aim of the game is to keep the ball away from the other team for as long as possible. 4

1. Divide the group into two teams. 2. The girl who has the ball must throw it to a team member without moving her feet. 3. The team members move around her. Everyone must stay in the playing area. 4. The other team must try to catch the ball. 5. If the ball falls to the ground, or goes outside the play area, the ball goes to the other team. Too easy? Increase the size of the playing area and reduce the size of the ball. Too difficult? Use a larger ball or reduce the playing area. Allow the ball to bounce before being caught. Queimada Duration: 30 minutes What you need: a ball and an open area In Brazil children play a game called Queimada. Give it a go - it's really fun! 1. Each team stand on opposite ends of the play area and one member from each team starts in the middle. 2. One person in the middle starts the game by throwing the ball to a member of her team. 3. The person with the ball has to throw it at members of the opposite team, aiming below the waist. 4. If a girl gets hit by the ball then she is out and has to go and stand in the middle. 5. The team with the last remaining player is the winner. Find out more about guiding in Brazil here. Safety tip: Use a soft ball so the players don't get hurt! Sit down volleyball Duration: 30 minutes Sections: Brownies, Guides, The Senior Section What you need: beach ball and net/rope 5

1. Get the girls into two teams, preferably even numbers. 2. Hang the net/rope in the middle of the meeting place. 3. Each team should spread out and sit either side of the net/rope. 4. The aim of the game is to keep the beach ball in the air without dropping it. Points are scored by hitting the ball onto the floor on the opposite team's side of the net. 5. Girls must move around on the floor without using their feet. Take it further You could hold a mini tournament, each game lasting around five minutes. The team who has scored the most points within that time wins and goes on to play a different team. Targets Duration: 30 minutes Sections: Rainbows, Brownies, Guides What you need: chalk, a bean bag, outdoor space A game to improve girls' coordination skills. 1. Draw a line on the ground with chalk. 2. Write numbers one to ten spaced evenly around your open area - with the lower numbers closer to the line and the higher numbers further away. 3. Girls should line up behind the line and throw the bean bag at the number one target, which should be the easiest to reach. If she hits it, she should run to the back of the line. If she doesn't, she should sit to one side. 4. Once all of the girls have attempted the number one target they should then try number two and so on. 5. Keep going until there is only one girl left. 6. The higher the number the harder the target should be to hit. Be aware that if members of the group have poor coordination this should be taken into account when writing out the numbers on the floor to ensure there are some everyone can achieve. Safety tip: Make sure that when the girls throw the bean bag they are clear of any buildings and people. 6

Team balloon juggle Duration: 25 minutes Sections: Rainbows, Brownies What you need: a balloon for each team, and some spares This game develops hand-eye coordination and teamwork. It s great fun too! 1. Divide the girls into teams of three to five players. 2. Each team has one balloon. Girls take turns hitting the balloon. The aim is to keep it in the air for as long as possible. 3. The same girl must not touch the balloon twice in a row. If she does, or if the balloon touches the floor, the team must start again. 4. The winning team is the one that hits the balloon the most times without it touching the ground. Mosquito tag! Sections: Rainbows, Brownies, Guides What you need: tokens Malaria kills one million people every year. It is one of the most serious issues affecting world health. Ninety per cent of all malaria cases are in sub-saharan Africa, where it is the main cause of death and a major threat to child health. Malaria is a disease of the blood that is transmitted to people by infected mosquitoes. The majority of children s deaths from severe malaria are caused by delays in giving effective antimalarial treatment. Insecticide-treated nets could prevent almost half a million deaths each year. This game aims to bring the reality of disease to the group in a non-threatening and engaging way. 1. One girl is chosen to be a mosquito. She closes her eyes while the Leader gives a few of the girls tokens representing antimalarial drugs/mosquito nets. 2. They play tag and when a girl is tagged by the mosquito she has to sit down. If a girl with a token is tagged she shows it to the mosquito and can keep going (ie she is immune/protected from malaria). Talking points: Have the girls heard of malaria before? Do they think it s fair that some people can t access treatments and equipment to prevent and treat infection? 7

Round in a circle Onye ne na anya azu is a popular running game among African girls. Everyone sits in a big circle and one player is chosen to start the game. She walks around the outside of the circle with a leaf, stone or other small object, which she drops behind one of the other girls. This girl must then get up and chase the first girl trying to catch her before she gets back to her place. If she catches her, she wins, and the first girl sits down in the vacant place, facing outwards to show she is out. The winner is the person who is left when everyone else is out. You might like to sing a song while the girl walks around the circle. Top tip Skipping with a rope is a popular pastime in Zambia as well as in England. Find a long rope so that four or five girls can jump at once. Fit for sport Get out of your chairs and get active! Try a triathlon. A triathlon is made up of three sports: running, swimming and cycling. Organise your own version of a triathlon using your unit s three favourite sports. For example, you could have a three-legged race, an obstacle course and bunny hop across the room! Take it further Take inspiration from a triathlon for a quick warm up before a meeting, the aim being to do three sporty things in quick succession. Try a minute running around the meeting place, then throwing and catching, and finally jumping on the spot. Queenie, Queenie Sections: Rainbows, Brownies What you need: a ball 1. Play the ball game, Queenie, Queenie, with younger girls. 2. Choose one girl to be Queenie; she stands at one end of the room, facing the wall. 8

3. The other girls gather at the opposite end of the room, passing a tennis ball between them until Queenie shouts STOP! 4. The girls then put their hands behind their backs, one girl hiding the ball, and chant together: Queenie, Queenie, who s got the ball? Show hand, (everyone shows their left hand); Show hand, (everyone shows their right hand); Not me at all! 5. Queenie has three guesses as to who has the ball. If she guesses correctly, the girl with the ball becomes Queenie. 6. It helps if all the girls make a show of fumbling behind their backs as if swapping a ball over. Mole in a hole Duration: 30 minutes What you need: a blindfold, something that jangles when you pick it up (for example, a bunch of keys) 1. One girl is the prey a mole. She kneels down with the rest of the girls in a circle around her. The prey must be blindfolded, and is guarding her jangly treasure. 2. One of the girls in the circle is picked to be a cat (a mole s main predator). 3. The cat must creep around the outside of the circle, creep in through the gap, and steal the mole s treasure. The mole must listen out for sounds of the predator. If she hears a sound, she points in that direction. 4. If the mole points directly at the cat, the cat is caught out and returns to her place. The mole remains in the middle of the circle. 5. If the cat manages to snatch the treasure, she becomes the mole and a new cat is chosen. Popcorn Duration: ten minutes 1. Everyone squats down on the floor, well-spaced out. Explain that each person is a piece of corn, the floor is a big pan, and that you re all going to make popcorn. 2. Tell them that you are starting to heat the pan and that, as it gets hotter, the corn can start to pop but not all at once. Explain that the popping is a group thing which should start gradually, build up to a crescendo and then slow to a stop. 9

3. To pop, a player jumps up, clapping hands above their head and saying pop. Try it a few times to get in the swing! Balloon ball Duration: 30 minutes What you need: a balloon or light ball, chalk 1. Divide the girls into two equal groups and get them to sit in two lines on the floor facing each other, about 1m 1.5m apart. 2. Ask each line to do a head count from one end to the other. Then tell the girls that the evens on one line are on the same team as the odds from the opposite line. 3. The space between the opposing lines of girls is the playing field and the ends are the goal lines. Mark these out with chalk and designate one goal for each team. 4. The object of the game is for the teams to try to get the balloon or ball across their opponent s goal line to score. The balloon may not be held or thrown, only patted on with an open palm. At no time during the game are the girls allowed to move from their position. 5. To start the game, place the balloon or ball in the middle then give the start signal. The action begins as soon as one player can pat the ball without moving from her spot. Each time a goal is scored, the game restarts with the balloon in the middle. The team with the most goals after the allotted time wins. Take it further This game could be played in the pool with girls pushing a floating ball across the surface of the water. Guides: Defrost! What you need: old clothes, a freezer 1. Before the activity, completely soak T-shirts, gloves and socks and bundle them into balls. The balls should be identical (that is, one sock, one glove and one T-shirt in each). 2. Put the balls in the freezer, ideally overnight, until frozen stiff. 3. Organise girls into teams, provide each with a frozen ball, and give them five minutes to unfold the frozen clothes however they can. 10

They could use their own body heat by throwing it from person to person, stand in a warm place (not near a radiator!) or rub it vigorously. The first team to separate the bundle into its constituent parts wins. 11
